Avatar n tn They are most noticeable on my thumb nails and index fingers, and rarely on other fingers (although almost all of the other nails have had similar lines once or twice). These lines often appear in series, so that there are several lines on the nail at any one point. They also tend to appear within a few days of each other, especially on the thumb nails.
Avatar f tn I read this is nothing to worry about, I have them too. You can google Nail Problems & they will show you pictures of different nail problems. Hope this helps.
Avatar n tn I have found out about psoriatic nails, found in people with psoriasis, and ridges and peeling in your finger or toenails has to do with iron. High iron manifests in skin problems, and psoriasis is common in iron disorders. Google it with typing in peeling toenails or fingernails. Here is a link.
Avatar f tn I developed horizontal lines or indentations in 2 fingernails. No injury. My Dr called them Beaus lines. He says I was either exposed to a toxin of some sort or they can be a result of a systemic disease. He seemed very unconcerned. In my reading betablockers pop up as a possible cause. My question is if the betablocker caused them does that mean it is harming me? I went to my pharmacy and he said only if your heartrates slow.
Avatar m tn If fungal infection is present , the nail may detach from the nail bed which is not true in your case. So give this quite some time. Do not forcibly manipulate the nail to avoid injuring the area.
Avatar n tn On the other hand, splinter hemorrhages appear as a red to reddish-brown fine, vertical line that resembles a splinter beneath the nail, this disorder occurs when blood vessels in the nail bed are damaged or from a nail injury. If a dark spot or streak appears on any nail, and is not the result of an injury, it must be examined by a dermatologist to rule out melanoma.
Avatar m tn Toenails are affected more often than fingernails and occurs primarily in adults, most commonly after 60 years of age. Treatment for a fungal nail infection includes using medications, taking steps to prevent the infection from returning, and removing the affected nail. However, treatment does not work for 20% to 25% of people with the condition. It is important to confirm the diagnosis of onychomycosis by potassium hydroxide (KOH) preparation, culture or histology.
Avatar n tn From what I have read the spots are due to damage to the nail, like bumping the nail. They only disappear when the nail grows. Although, don't know if we are referring to the same type of spots.
Avatar m tn So for a while now I have had thin red lines near the tips of my fingernails under the nail accompanied by a little lack of color beneath the lines. This is most prominent in my thumbs. The color in my fingernails seems to be slightly darker than normal and maybe a little purple tinged. When I extend my fingers, the color leaves the front half of them. I have no idea what this is and my doctor didn't seem to know either.
Avatar f tn Horizontal ridges and white lines on nails are seen in trauma to nail bed, kidney diseases, pellagra or Vit B3 deficiency, low protein, arsenic poisoning, and liver diseases. Hence a kidney and liver function test should be done.
745313 tn?1323142298 Many have other things going on that can and does affect their nails. But in the cases in point Treatment can be and in my case is the culprit. People who drink knox gelatin or take speciak vitamins for nails are wasting their money. Just like I waste my money everytime I buy a miracle cream for a better complexion. I just read the article and it does not mention the thin brittle nails so it is not relevant in this case.

1356637 tn?1277263982 Hello, From the symptoms fungal infections of the nail need to be ruled out. In onychomycosis(nail fungal infection) nail plate can have a thickened, yellow, or black appearance. The nails can become rough and crumbly, or can separate from the nail bed. Topical and oral antifungals are needed which are available under prescription. My sincere advice would be to consult a dermatologist and get a KOH examination of the nail and skin specimen done to confirm the diagnosis.
Avatar m tn About 6 months ago I noticed that 1 of my fingernails started to yellow in the corners at the distal part of my nail, at the site of yellowing the nail also got hardened. With time, the same happened in some of my other fingernails ( but stayed well demarcated at the corners. Also, both my toenails show a slow regression in the line where the nail is attached to the nail bed. Lastly, about a month ago the ring fingers in both my hands show fine pitting, 5-6 pits per nail, needle head size.
Avatar f tn I have these white lines on my fingernails that run parallel to the cuticle. They have areas in the white line that are heavier and make the line look like a spot. They cover the nail in it's entirety. I have taken zinc for year now with no real change. I am concerned about taking too much zinc since it was removed from some dental products. My hypoyroidism is controlled with medication. I do not suffer trauma to my hands. I am 55 yes old and have had these for as long as I can remember.

Avatar f tn Nutritional deficiencies that show up in the fingernails usually are in both hands and in at least 2-3 fingernails. For example, spoon shaped finger nails that can hold a drop of water. This is called the "water drop test" may indicate an iron deficiency; this has been seen in iron deficient patients on dialysis. White spotting in several nails, both hands may indicate a zinc deficiency.

Your nails are a big reflection on the nutrition you may or may not be receiving. Perhaps ypur body is not observing a high enough amount of nutrients. If you have never had nail problems before, I highly suggest speaking to your doctor about it.

D stands for the digit most commonly involved; E stands for extension of the pigment onto the proximal and/or lateral nailfold (ie, Hutchinson's sign); and F stands for family or personal history of dysplastic nevus or melanoma. Also beau lines should be ruled out.
