My impression is that initial HSV infections and recurrent HSV infections are both significantly more frequent in mycophenolate users. These are considered to be opportunistic, but not as serious as something like shingles. Moreover, they respond well to antiviral agents because mycophenolate actually potentiates such agents. I did not know any of this before but I know it now.
I know that part of your job here is to alleviate unwarranted anxiety.
50 yo male with kidney transplant in March, 2011 from a cadaver, donated kidney.
Tacrolimus 2.5mg BID
Mycophenolate 500mg AM , 250mg PM
No after affects post transplant, no illnesses.
Maintaining a healthy weight and on a vegetarian diet.
All other lab levels are WNL.
additional agents such as mycophenolate (cellcept) may be necessary or in cases of severe rejection a medication such as thymoglobulin may be needed.
I was recently diagnosed with CIDP in my left calf. I have been having electrical shocks in my left calf now for about a year and a half. After this diagnosis I was told to continue with my Gabapentin {3x a day @300mg} but I was also told that a possible Botox shot in the surface area of my left calf might also end this pain. Can anyone tell me what possible effects the Botox shot might have on me such as adverse reactions etc.

My wife has SLE which about 8 months ago began to come undercontrol with mycophenolate.
I recently had a transjugular biopsy and I was told it shows I am in Stage 4 Cirrhosis of the Liver. My previous Biopsy 3 yrs before showed I was at stage 0-1... I have been taking medications and see my doctor on a regular basis... How can I advance so fast undetected and now that I am in stage 4 how long can will it be before my liver fails completely.
I have Auto immune hepatitis aswell and primary biliary cirrosis. I was on Azathioprine for two years but when my blood counts went up and I was to take 50mg morning and night, my body did not react well to the drug, so was put on Mercaptopurine. This was devestating and I started to go to liver failure. I am not on Cellcept which is Mycophenolate Mofetil 1g morning and 1g night. This is a fantastic immunposuppressant.
And immune suppresant mycophenolate for 6 months. I am grateful for your thoughts. Apologies in delay replying I have been unwell.
Although metastasis and death from these cancers are uncommon in the general population, they can be fatal in the transplant population.
All post transplant patients should be alert to the early detection of cancer. This can be helped by monthly breast, testicular and skin self examination and routine medical check-ups. PAP smears, breast exams, testicular exams, and skin cancer screening should be done by your physician every year. Other general measures should also be taken.

Being extremely paranoid I got myself checked thrice (twice in 2006 and once this year in april-may time) since then and all the tests came back negative and everything looked normal. However, when I went for my test early on this year, the nurse who did the pap smear said it looked like I had an ectropion, which I thought was odd seeing as how I wasn't pregnant, in my teens or on the oral contraceptive. But the doctor who I then spoke to said it was normal.
It was a Adenoma...It ruptured in Dec 09..I was in ICU for 3 weeks..when this first happened They did three Embolizations..Then finally in May of this year they had to remove it..I just wasnt sure if all this was normal..Funny they have no idea what might have caused this tumor..they were thinking birth control..But I wasnt on it for years..but they still told me to stay away from any OCP..
This is because the other meds like Azathioprine and Mercaptopurine disagreed with me intensely and I turned a beautiful shade of butterscotch and was oh so ill. This new drug has less chemicals in and suits me very well, in fact I walked 6 miles in Jordan as opposed to not even being able to get out of bed. Your husband just has to enjoy life to the full and I expect he will have a long and happy one, but the positive side is essential.
My question is: since having this diagnosis do you stay away from supplementation for other health benefits? I was wanting to take chondroitin and glucosamin for my joints. I don't want to take anything that will compromise my liver. I currently am on 5 mg of prednisone and 50 mg of Imuran. I get checked now every 6 months and everything is back to normal levels except my bilirubin is slightly out of range but doc doesn't feel its an issue.
Is anyone else on here suffering with depression or anxiety in their pregnancy?
I was diagnosed with PND after having my LG and got rid of it fine but have been living with anxiety ever since, I was coping with it fine but since falling pregnant this time my anxiety had definitely worsened and finding the right treatment is tricky.
