This research is awaiting approval by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) for a Phase I Human Study. We are also studying the use of embryonic stem cells and umbilical cord blood stem cells which are more flexible and adaptable than adult bone marrow stem cells as agents of neural regeneration.
Avatar f tn Stem-cell transplants may control and even reverse multiple sclerosis symptoms if done early enough, a small study has suggested. "Not one of 21 adults with relapsing-remitting MS who had stem cells transplanted from their own bone marrow deteriorated over three years." link to article: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/7858559.
Avatar f tn An Australian man appears to have made a remarkable recovery from multiple sclerosis after receiving new stem cell treatment. Ben Leahy, 20, was diagnosed with the disease in 2008 and ended up in intensive care at one point with respiratory failure after his condition deteriorated rapidly. He was in a wheelchair and also had sight problems when he underwent the procedure earlier this year but today he is walking and recovering well.
382218 tn?1341181487 53 AM Julia Stewart smiles while showing the lack of tremors in her hands during an interview in Bedford on Sept 21. Stewart was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2004 and says that aggressive drug therapy has improved her quality of life. Julia Stewart had never been nervous in front of a crowd and was bewildered one day when her right hand started to shake uncontrollably as she was giving a presentation. She was even more taken aback when the shaking didn’t stop.
Avatar m tn s FDA (Food and Drug Administration) regulates stem cells extensively because stem cells will cause the profits of pharmacies, surgeons and the entire medical community for that matter to decrease.
1831849 tn?1383228392 The study is an open-label, phase I clinical trial designed to evaluate the safety and tolerability of intrathecal administration of autologous mesenchymal stem cell-derived neural progenitor cells (MSC-NP) in patients with progressive multiple sclerosis. Study participants will receive three intrathecal injections of culture-expanded autologous MSC-NPs at three month intervals.
Avatar f tn Zoe, I wonder if that person in Russia (or visiting Russia) had a stem cell transplant. It's the only treatment I'm aware of with any potential to allow a person with MS to start over with a new immune system. Stem cell transplants aren't done routinely to treat MS yet but there have been some done in cases of extreme loss of function and within research protocols. Some results have been quite remarkable.
665881 tn?1248926997 ” Wynick then turned to Professor Neil Scolding who studies the use of stem cells in the treatment of multiple sclerosis. Scolding provided human brain tissue affected by multiple sclerosis and, as the team predicted, galanin was also shown to be upregulated in this brain tissue. Professor Scolding said: “The results of this research are very significant and provide new insights into how the disease might be treated”.
Avatar n tn Hi there. Your MRI report suggest that there are markers of Multiple sclerosis in your brain though no signs of active demyelination are present. these finding need to be correlated clinically for signs and evidence of multiple sclerosis. These multiple neurological symptoms including seizing hands and tremors could be due to a chronic demyelinating condition called multiple sclerosis where the disease phase is characterized by active phase and remissions.
Avatar n tn Vitamin B12 deficiency is associated with peripheral neuropathy, which causes tingling, and numbness, overlapping symptoms of multiple sclerosis. Multiple sclerosis is a chronic demyelinating neurological disorder where the disease phase is characterized by active phase and remissions. It has multiple symptoms and signs and is a diagnosis of exclusion.

335728 tn?1331414412 He flew to China earlier for five stem cell treatments. There, 15 million stem cells were injected into his spine with every treatment. Over the course of 33 days, he also did daily physiotherapy and some acupuncture. Within a few days of Chuckry's arrival, he noticed one significant improvement that he attributed to the stem cell treatment. "All of a sudden, I had a stretch," he recalled, "that was beautiful.
Avatar f tn The symptoms of multiple sclerosis are loss of balance, muscle spasms, numbness in any area, problems with walking and coordination, tremors in one or more arms and legs. Bowel and bladder symptoms include frequency of micturition, urine leakage, eye symptoms like double vision uncontrollable rapid eye movements, facial pain, painful muscle spasms, tingling, burning in arms or legs, depression, dizziness, hearing loss, fatigue etc.

338416 tn?1420045702 In this study, published in the current issue of Nature Medicine, researchers established animal models of multiple sclerosis by injecting mice with myelin into their immune systems, causing it to attack the animals' own myelin nerve-cell coatings, much as MS attacks a human being’s.

What's nice about this blog is that not only do you get the research abstracts, but they also give some sort of context or commentary as to why you might be interested or how promising they think whatever it is will be. As a bonus, if you have a question about the research, they will often answer it in the comments.
Avatar n tn Almost always a dilated heart does not have necrotic cells until there is a heart attack (MI). Cell therapy, particularly with stem cells, has created great interest as a solution to the fact that there are limited treatments for postischemic heart disease and none that can regenerate damaged heart cells to strengthen cardiac performance. FDA has not approved stem cell therapy for heart disease, I have read approval is about 5 years away.

Avatar n tn Trish, good response :) BobTheCanadian - I am a Ukrainian myself with bunch of relatives back in Russia - noone there talks about stemcells curing HepC. Folks in Russia who can afford SOC - do it, and those who cannot afford - hope to get in line in a government sponsored program for SOC. There are places you can go there that use you basically as a guinea pig for experiments with stem cells, most of those involve "rejuvination" procedures... Many patients get cancer from that, too.
