Avatar f tn Do people with mental illness have a genetic predisposition to it and then gets triggered from various environmental factors such as social events, school, or maybe for no reason at all? I'm asking because I had severe OCD when I was young, started at 12 years old or so. It consisted of me repeating ambiguous thoughts/phrases/words in my mind every morning before I started my day. The thoughts/words never made sense and could never be said out loud because it was just gibberish.
Avatar m tn My best guess would be a combo of a genetic predisposition; environmental factors eg: low vitamin D that made me more vulnerable to it; and a history of infectious mono that set the wonky autoimmune response in motion. But I am not a scientist. This is just speculation.
1639182 tn?1317147533 Thanks for replying! I have had symptoms for years, and always believed my preeclamptic pregnancy (and a complication and infection from the surgery) was the cause. It took several years (since early 2002), and several doctors who would have rather read doctor opinions and put me in the depressive category (from 2005-2009), than figure out the cause of my symptoms (If I was 'depressed', it was because the doctors stopped listening - not the cause of my symptoms).
488198 tn?1493875092 A Genetic Cause For Multiple Sclerosis Is Identified And Funded By Science Patron, Jeffrey Epstein The CYP27B1 gene is discovered by Oxford University to be a leading cause for multiple sclerosis NEW YORK, June 15, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- A recent study at Oxford University in England and published in Annals of Neurology, has identified a gene that causes vitamin D deficiency and may also be the cause of multiple sclerosis.
Avatar f tn Recent studies In 2005, researchers at the Serono Genetics Institute (SGI) achieved a major milestone in identifying and creating a register of genes involved in Multiple Sclerosis (MS). For the first time in this disease area, researchers identified 80 genes involved in the inflammatory and neuro-degenerative pathways of MS, based on a 40% genome scan comparing the genetic profile of a total of 1,800 people with MS and healthy individuals in different populations.
Avatar f tn The genetic inheritance of asthma and/or a predisposition to it is complex. In essence, persons may be born with a genetic pattern favorable to the development of asthma but never exhibit the outward, clinical expression of it. I believe that description applies to your grandparents who actually did, in effect, genetically pass on the “asthma gene(s)” to your parents or, maybe just to one of your parents for a person with asthma need not get these genes from both parents.
Avatar m tn ve been reading some information lately about risk factors of multiple sclerosis that are scaring me. I am a 23 year old male from northern California, and I have a half brother who is about 20 years older than me who was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis about 10 years ago. Almost all my ancestry is from Northern Europe (English, Irish, Swedish, German).
Avatar m tn I found this site the other day and it also has good articles on MS research. file:///Users/Charley/Desktop/Multiple%20Sclerosis%20Resource%20Centre.
382218 tn?1341181487 6% had relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis, 9.4% primary progressive multiple sclerosis and 6% clinically isolated syndrome. Nearly 40% of our multiple sclerosis patients with disease duration >10 years (mean = 16.2 ± 5.3 years) remained with no or mild disability (Expanded Disability Status Scale [EDSS] 3). Also, about 30% of patients with relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis showed benign disease evolution (EDSS 3) more than 20 years (mean = 24.0 ± 3.3) after onset.
634733 tn?1316625992 Some individuals will have genetic predisposition to uveitis which is related to autoimmune disease processes..... because of the relationship between Uveitis and over 90 different pathogens and autoimmune disease processes we suggest that individuals with recurrent or chronic uveitis be treated by an uveitis specialist" THEY DO LIST MS AS ONE OF THE MANY AUTOIMMUNE DISEASES. Avatar f tn He is going to ask for a private consultation with a Professor of Neurology whose speciality is neuro-inflammatory disease and multiple sclerosis. The current Neurologist is so laid back he is almost comatose and we have no faith in him. We just want my husband to have a better quality of life as we are both becoming recluses with his inability to walk far, and motor problems in falling over. We do appreciate the time you have taken in responding. Liz & hubby.
Avatar n tn Numerous autoimmune conditions have been associated w/ psychiatric conditions. Bipolar d/o is an hereditary condition & is also seen more often in people w/ multiple sclerosis & other disorders, including autoimmune d/o. Often autoimmune conditions show so many symptoms that people can look bipolar, with out being bipolar. That makes it very confusing.
