Avatar m tn Can someone tell me what it means when the results of oligoclonal bands in csf reads H?
Avatar f tn To distinguish between oligoclonal bands in the CSF due to a peripheral gammopathy and oligoclonal bands due to local production in the CNS, serum and CSF should be tested simultaneously. Oligoclonal bands can however be observed in a variety of other diseases, e.g., subacute sclerosing panencephalitis, inflammatory polyneuropathy, CNS lupus, and brain tumors and infarctions.
Avatar n tn There are MS diagnoses without the oligoclonal bands. The n\bands may appear in a month of diagnosis or may take a few years to do so. Have you started treatment? This is the most important part. The earlier you start treatment, better are the chances or remission.
Avatar f tn I had an initial diagnosis of Transverse Myelitis and a lesion in T6 /T7 area of spinal cord but nothing in brain. My LP was positive for Oligoclonal Bands. Initial symptoms showed in June as numbness, tingling in both legs and weakness. Hands effected as well but not so bad. I struggled with this for months slowly getting better then developed banding in abdomen and extreme leg weakness.
Avatar n tn vibration or buzzing sensation in the head need to be checked for multiple sclerosis or the L’ H ERMITE SIGN which is the brain buzzing and vibration in the head. Multiple sclerosis is a chronic neurological disorder in which there is widespread demyelinaltion or loss of the myelin sheath from various nerves and regions in the brain causing widespread neurological deficits.
Avatar f tn Your doctor will need to investigate you for multiple sclerosis where the disease phase is characterized by active phase and remissions. It has multiple symptoms and signs and is a diagnosis of exclusion. The symptoms of multiple sclerosis are loss of balance, muscle spasms, numbness in any area, problems with walking and coordination, tremors in one or more arms and legs.
Avatar f tn With the 2017 revisions, oligoclonal bands can substitute for lesions to demonstrate dissemination in time in a person with the potential precursor to MS, known as clinically isolated syndrome (CIS), and who also meet the MRI criteria for dissemination in space While oligoclonal bands are not unique to MS, they can support the diagnosis if clinical and MRI diagnostic features are not clear-cut.
Avatar m tn I also had a lumbar puncture which showed 3 oligoclonal bands in CSF and no bands present in serum. Still, I do not have a diagnosis of MS. I do not get it. Comment on neurologist report says "Given the patient's symptomatology, as well as the abnormal findings on the MRI, I do raise the possibility of multiple sclerosis even though her spinal fluid is normal, except for 3 oligoclonal bands." So, the question is, do I have MS or do I not?? So confused.
Avatar f tn Oligoclonal bands are present in the CSF of more than 85% of patients with clinically definite multiple sclerosis (MS). To distinguish between oligoclonal bands in the CSF due to a peripheral gammopathy and oligoclonal bands due to local production in the CNS, serum and CSF should be tested simultaneously. Oligoclonal bands can however be observed in a variety of other diseases, e.g., subacute sclerosing pan-encephalitis, inflammatory polyneuropathy, CNS lupus, and brain tumors and infarctions.
Avatar f tn The other possible cause could be multiple sclerosis and is a diagnosis of exclusion. The symptoms of multiple sclerosis are loss of balance, muscle spasms, numbness in any area, problems with walking and coordination, tremors in one or more arms and legs.
1316750 tn?1274207119 Basically your LP is saying that you have four oligoclonal bands in your spinal fluid, that are not also present in your blood. You have antibodies to four different diseases in your CSF, basically. Which means that the blood-brain barrier has been broken - normally blood does not get into the brain. The brain is surrounded by the same CSF that bathes your spinal cord. So google 'oligoclonal bands' and you'll find out quite a bit!

6394857 tn?1380910353 A lumbar puncture (aka spinal tap) looks for oligoclonal bands. If they are also found in the blood drawn at the same time, the test result is considered negative. If the bands are unique to the cerebro-spinal fluid (2 or more), it's considered a positive result. Here's the fun bit. Neither positive nor negative test results are a homerun either way. Neither result says 'You have MS' or 'You don't have MS'.
Avatar n tn The mere presence of oligo clonal bands (OCB) does not help in the diagnosis or ruling out of multiple sclerosis.Multiple sclerosis can be diagnosed based on certain clinical criteria which constantly undergo revision with time. Let me quote a line from Harrisons principles of Internal Medicine, the Bible of Internal Medicine: 'Two or more OCBs are found in 75 to 90% of patients with MS.
Avatar n tn The various causes of blurred and double vision are cataracts, macular degeneration, damage to muscles and nerves in the eye which can be caused by thyroid problems, multiple sclerosis, strokes, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Diabetes can also cause these symptoms by diabetic retinopathy. Consult an ophthalmologist for eyes evaluation.
