Common Questions and Answers about Ms symptoms diet

multiple-sclerosis

Avatar f tn Hi, Has anyone changed their diet and had symptom relief?
1054985 tn?1257173275 I thought that was a reasonable approach. Looking back at the last 5 years I had minor symptoms of MS - depression, fatigue, and insomnia were the main ones. About 3 years ago however when my wife was pregnant with my first daughter I decided I was going to shed some weight, I put myself on a ketogenic diet and bam fatigue and depression gone like the wind.
572651 tn?1530999357 no diet will cure your MS, if so, the MS society would be singing it from the highest hilltop. That's all I am going to say other than I read all of her original claims and then cleaned it out of my head. I have to have hard science and I know that MS is not cured by any diet. Perhaps you might clean up your lifestyle and body functions by following a particular diet that makes you feel better, but it will not make your MS go away.
1556636 tn?1329240757 Aspartame is said to produce symptoms similar to MS. I should think that if you already have MS you don't need any more symptoms.
Avatar f tn Also swank diet. does anyone believe diet is a major factor in the developement and progression of ms? I dont see many talking about it on here, but have found several positive reviews of the best bet diet. only found 1 that said it had no effect.
Avatar f tn It did not change my MS symptoms. Eating a balanced diet never hurts. In my life times there have been so many different diets I do not know what to believe.
Avatar f tn Did he recomend the diet as a cure for your MS? It's not. Did he recommend the swank diet to help you feel better? It probably would. Getting all the meat and processed foods out of our diet would make us feel and be healthier. The Swank Diet has been around a long time, it has been looked at, and has never been proven to make a difference in MS. There is a new clinical trial being done for the next year out in Oregon tht is testing the Swank diet against a usual diet.
1889242 tn?1321354938 Yes, I followed a Swank diet for about 9 months. I am now on a sort of modified one. My MS sx have always gone completely away after a relapse (3 in 20 yrs) and each time, since I didn't know I had MS, I didn't follow the Swank diet. This past time my sx went away following the diet but as I said, they always have gone away w/o following the diet. Yes, his study is compelling but not sure I would call it evidence of anything scientific, mostly antidotal.
Avatar f tn That diet is very similar to the Swank diet from Dr. Swank here is Portland. I was noticing that one diet eliminates gluten and claims to improve MS, while most of the others encourage all whole grains and claim to reverse or improve MS. It would be interesting to dredge up all the big diets and print their recommendations here so we would have it for comparison. They all encourage eating whole foods and eliminating or lowering red meat and dairy.
Avatar m tn hello to everyone...just wondering if anyone has heard or used this...the ms recovery diet...
738075 tn?1330575844 I got interested in Dr Swank's diet and Dr.Weis's diet a few years ago. I can't say it affected my MS for sure, but I do know it affected my general health in a positive way. I did give up most dairy and almost all refined foods, but it took me a couple of years to get used to it. I did it slowly on purpose. After a while it became second nature and I began looking at other diets like the South Beach and Mediterranean.
338416 tn?1420045702 For those of you who have wondered about the MS Diet, whether it's the MS Recovery Diet or the Swank diet, you'll need to read this article. The author says that there's no MS diet that has been proven to help prevent disease progression. http://www.nationalmssociety.org/download.aspx?id=1371 Research has shown that excluding anything from your diet is a bad idea - unless you're actually allergic to the ingredient. So what should you eat? To summarize the article...
Avatar m tn I apologize in advance. I have been looking at all the old posts about diet and it was getting overwhelming and some responses were a few years old....so here goes... My 29 year old fiance was just diagnosed with CIS. His symptoms are tingling in hands and feet. He is going to start meds soon (I think Copaxone, but we haven't decided 100% yet). I am trying to find information on what type of "diet" or way of eating would best help alleviate his symptoms.
Avatar n tn I was recently diagnosed with MS, after two MRIs and a spinal tap (which showed lesions). My daughter recently sent me an article on MS symptoms caused by diet sodas and artificial sweetners. I have been off all diet products for one week now and don't feel much difference. I went to another doctor recently, and he said he didn't think I had MS and then asked if I drank diet sodas - then not another word about it.
Avatar f tn There are many people who swear by the Swank Diet as a cure for MS. So I would add that if it truly were a cure, most of us would be following it closely. We know there is no cure yet, but following this type of diet can't help but be beneficial to our health if you have the personal strength to be that rigid about what you eat. As always, before you start any type of diet you should consult with your doctor and make sure it won't do you any harm.
867582 tn?1311627397 When my last set of docs wrote me off as being a nutty person with ischemic disease (both refuted by my new docs) I became very interested in a diet that would help me with my symptoms. There is a lot of controversy over MS diets and many docs claim that there is no proof that the diets work. However, I felt that I didn't have anything to lose as my previous docs were of no help at all. So I researched the diets, especially Dr.
Avatar f tn If diet "heals" you than it's not the disorder you were diagnosed with it is either all in your head or it's a food allergy.
Avatar n tn I don't know if this helps. I myself don't drink diet anything, but my aunt who also has ms drinks diet Dr Pepper like it is going out of style. I don't think that it causes her any problems. Wish I could do more.
Avatar f tn t comment on this particular book, but, while I believe a healthy diet is good for anyone, people both with and without MS, I don't believe that eating properly can eliminate the symptoms of MS. It may be a good book, I don't know, just don't expect miracles regarding MS symptoms. Who knows....maybe there's a recipe that makes tofu taste good...
Avatar n tn This is not a question, but a comment regarding some of these people that are having these crazy neuro symptoms going on. Let me tell you what went on with my wife in 1997. She was having really crazy symptoms. Her skin was extremely tender like she had a sunburn. Her muscles in her legs felt like they were cramping but they weren't. Dizzy etc..etc.. We went to several Neurologists and they couldn't tell us anything but they all eluded to MS.
1583834 tn?1296685960 Low vitamin D may cause MS ( jury is still out) but once you have MS vitamin D is not going to help MS. That said a balanced diet is good for over all health. I have had all my vitamin level, glucose, cholesterol etc. and they are all great because I have a good diet an exercise. If you have MS you want your over all health to be good.
Avatar n tn Did anyone on this forum ever tried the MS Recovery Diet by Ann Sawyer and Judith Bachrach or any other diet and has been helped by it? And also did anyone ever heard about a company named Manatech, they have a product called ambrotose that is supposedly very good for the immune system? I just ordered the diet book to see what they have to say but I am very skeptical especially about the ambrotose supplement.
Avatar f tn ve also had incredible improvement in MS symptoms since doing the HCG diet. I felt like my old self while on the diet, and now that I've been off for awhile, I still feel fantastic! I'm going to talk to my doctor about how often I can take the hormone, even once I've lost all the weight.
