Common Questions and Answers about Mri scan liver cancer

mri-scan

Avatar m tn Someone in this group emailed me and stated to be sure who ever does the MRI are experts with liver cancer. I emailed my doctor and his response was he cannot pick who does the MRI and has no way of knowing if they "are experts in detecting liver tumors"? I felt he was upset that i was even asking. I see you are a Doctor, does it matter who does the MRI?
1084115 tn?1385228589 Myself and all patients with liver cancer have MRIs with contrast every 3 months at minimum. I have had liver cancer for about 2 years and had MRI with contrast every 6 months since 2007. So I figure I have has about 20 MRIs with contrast in the last 5-6 years. And even more often like when a have followup after cancer treatments. Contrast agents are used to differentiate between the background of cirrhotic liver and other things such as lesions. There no side effects.

Avatar f tn But radiologist noticed a barely visible nodule or lesion in my liver. Was told will check in 6 months-probably nothing. Well in Sept 2008 liver cat scan showed 3 or 4 lesions in right lobe all less than 2 cm. Doctor had me get a neck to pelvis scan same day. Results came in. Everything fine except for liver lesions. Came back indeterminate and worrisome for metastatic cancer. Was told to get biopsy. Went home and did research on internet.
Avatar m tn the dr wants to see the morhology of my liver. the entire year nothing was mentioned about the ct scan, until i was finished with treatment.
Avatar n tn I'm a 41 yr old female and have just had an ultrasound with a diagnosis of hemangioma of the liver. The drs. office called me and said that they are sure that it is a hemangioma and not cancer because they looked at an old cat scan and it didn't show up on it. I have been researching liver hemangiomas since they told me this a couple of days ago and there are alot of pictures of hemangiomas on catscans on the internet.
Avatar n tn t really know what this means. Had a CT scan recently that showed up a spot or a growth and will be having an MRI to see if it's benign or cancerous. Did you ask your doctor what this means? I know I have a small nodule on my thyroid but that is okay and many people get nodules there and they are usually beniign. That may be the case with nodules on livers. Sorry I could not be of more help. Good luck to you and I'm sure some one else will answer your question shortly.
Avatar m tn The AFP is not going down. There is really little difference between the two. AFP numbers that is that high can be very serious and need immediate, specialized attention an proper diagnoses. A normal AFP is under 10 ng/ml. Sometimes higher levels of AFP are found in people with hep C due to inflammation of the liver. But AFP over 100 from inflammation is rare and must be monitored closely and it cause diagnosed as soon as possible as liver cancer can be life-threatening.
768754 tn?1373918737 Ultrasound alternating with MRI is much more common than CT Scan for liver cancer screening. My liver specialist in fact made a point of eliminating the CT Scan because of radiation risk, given the fact that liver cancer screening is something for life. Is your doctor a liver specialist (hepatologist). Those are the only ones that should be calling the shots. Don't worry about stepping on someone else's toes, and start worring about your toes and the rest of your body.
Avatar n tn Had a biopsy and it came back hemangiomas (benign clumps of blood vessels). Was sent to liver doctor and had a MRI. Got a call that said MRI didn't jive with hemangiomas. But showed 6 or 7 lesions in both lobes. Doc said maybe first biopsy was just blood off the top of lesion and I needed another. In the meantime I had all kinds of tests because they thought I had metastatic liver cancer. Passed all tests with flying colors (had no symptoms at all during all this).
Avatar f tn However, they scheduled a pet scan and it came back with one 5-6cm spot on his liver. The doctor has an mri scheduled later this week. I have had several people tell me that usually if its mets there is almost always more than just one spot on the liver. Are these people just trying to make me feel better or is there any truth to this at all.
Avatar n tn The MRI showed a lesion on the liver. Ultrasound was ordered. Then CT. Then MRI. In total 3 were found. The biggest on the right lobe was 5 cm. Another small one on right lobe. Both of these are believed to be hemangiamas (nothing to worry about). The problem lies in the third. It is in the left lobe and does not appear to be a hemangiama. First set of scans says probably FNH or hepatic adenmoa. GI doc said to stop BCP and follow up with scan.
Avatar m tn Colon cancer has a propensity for recurring in the liver, and even though your cancer was first diagnosed eight years ago, colon cancer has been known to come back as late as 10 years from initial discovery. So there is still a possibility that the lesion could be cancer, but we can't know for sure until a biopsy is done. By the way, has a CEA (carcinoembryonic antigen) test been done? If so, what are the results?
Avatar m tn How often was he scanned after transplant (Mri, CT)? Did his AFP rise? Is the cancer back in his liver or did it spread elsewhere? I am sorry for so many questions, but I worry about HCC reoccuring post transplant (for a family member). I hope both you and your friend will feel better soon. Thank you, in advance.
Avatar n tn Ultrasound is not a good study to look at liver cancer. The difference in size betwen the MRI and CT scan is minimal. Biopsies notoriously are unreliable in this setting with a lot of false negative results. I hope this is helpful.
Avatar n tn I got a liver and when my old liver was examined there was no cancer at all. The transplant team was being careful but if a liver had not become available they were going to scan my liver monthly. I am no expert on this subject but I believe that the only way to definitively diagnose whether the lesion is cancerous is to biopsy it - insert a hollow needle into the lesion and pull out a plug for the pathology department to examine.
Avatar m tn Have you been scheduled for tests that will be able to determine what is actually going on? Have you been scheduled for either a CT scan or MRI?
2076644 tn?1331837159 I have had a few health issues & found out that I have3 spots on my liver. Specalist said one looks beign, but the 2 other spots they couldn't see well enough from the ulrta- sound or CT scan, was scheduled for MRI of liver but couldn't do it due to fear of small area, , I have pain that stays under my ribs & goes threw to my lower back same side, I am afraid of Liver cancer please reply & help me figure out if it could be something different then that.
171927 tn?1294023723 t quite catch everything the nurse told me on the phone, but she said that the radiologist reported that it appeared that it was a fatty infiltration of the liver and has recommended a follow up MRI. I am very worried at this point. I have had problems with digesting food for almost four years. So far, with my other symptoms, the doctors have been looking at an autoimmune disorder (positive ANA 1:160 w/ two patterns). Why are they recommending an MRI now?
Avatar n tn An MRI or CAT scan? I only have catastrophic insurance and so far have not paid on my deductible. I do not want to have to pay $500.00 for a CAT scan for them to now tell me to do an MRI, that's $1500.00. Can a CAT scan tell if it is a tumour versus a fatty cyst? My cholesterol jumped from from 200 to 266 in one year with no change in diet either. Would a fatty cyst raise enzymes way beyond normal range? I hope you will respond to my questions.
Avatar m tn They just did a CT Scan w/ contrast. Today the doctor called and told me I have a suspicous lesion on my liver and I am to have an MRI. Why does he refer to it as suspicious?
Avatar m tn Got my MRI results today...and yes the MRI is far far superior than ultrasound which didn't see a 16 mm lesion on my liver (which thanks to God seems to be just a cyst), which MRI (and I took it even without contrast) was able to see. Btw, I did my ultrasound with the most famous ultrasound doctor in my city. People, forget the ultrasound if you wan't to seriously examine your liver for liver cancer, and do the MRI instead.
