Is it necessary to have more than one MRI scan done. I have only ever had the one scan, 15 yrs ago which was when I was given my official dx, despite having several episodes/relapses since. Initially told I had RRMS now being told I have SPMS with relapses.

There are things here with the medical history that none of us can really guess at cause none of us are doctors but I would find the very best one you can find (even if you can't treat with him all the time - some of them don't take insurance for example like my second opinion doco) and discuss all this with them. As the CT scan report was normal and since there was no MRI scan facility in the hospital the patient was not shifted immediately to another one. The doctor of the hospital to which he was later admitted mentioned about the delay. that is why i felt so. Do you think that the CT scan report which mentioned "brain-stem normal" was correct?

I just had my first abdominal MRI last week. No results back yet. I had just been getting ultrasounds every 6 mon. up until this point. After listening to a talk from the Liver Meeting about alternating with other methods, I suggested it to my doctor. He was fine with it as long as the insurance would cover it.

But over the past 12 months I have started to learn a bit of what thing cost, and it appears that even if you go private they are considerabley cheaper than in the US which to me dosen't seem quite right. In the Uk it is only a tiny percentage of people go private and even if you do, if you are suffering a long term illness you tend to be pushed over to the NHS as they have the specialists and equipment.

I had an MRI of the brain back in May, to investigate various cognitive / neurological problems I've been experiencing since the start of 2009 (mild confusion, memory problems, muscle twitching, etc). This came back normal (I have neither copies of the scans , nor the radiographers report - just a letter from neurologist saying all findings were normal).

They can however, detect mental illness such as scitzophreneia which i know because i was diagnosed through an MRI. The only mental illness an MRI scan able detect is an actually different brain connections than that of a normal brain. Ive had one done for mental illess! Can you describe some of your symptoms, what you feel and how often yolou feel it? I know your question is based on needing to know where to get a private MRI scan, which i am unsure of!!

An ultrasound and an uptake scan are different tests. :o) Didn't know FNA's were so expensive though...ouch.

My mri report : findings suggest Endometriosis with a focal endometriomas and bilateral complex hydro/hematosalpinx. Not sure that this means this is not cancer.

Other than cost, is there a reason I should have a CT scan instead of an MRI? I would rather not have the radiation exposure of a CT scan if an MRI will produce adequate data. Thank you!

It's not a cost issue. My doctor doesn't want to send me to MRI nor CT scan. She says that i don't need to do MRI, because CT didn't showed anyting abnormal, and that i am too young for serious disorders. It was only at the beginning of this year that I decided to see my GP about it, it was very emotional for me to discuss but she advised me to have some blood tests and a MRI scan, which I did. I initially thought these could be absence seizures but they were ruled out when the MRI scan came back normal and the blood tests were fine, revealing only that I had a thyroid issue. The GP has recommended I see a Neurologist but am afraid of what it could be. I just want to stop zoning out.

One more thought about the cost - did they give you a price for the MRI test? See if you can get that negotiated rate like they do with the big insurance companies. I'm with Anthem and it seems to me they only pay about 20-25% of the rate that is billed for my MRI's. It would be great if you could get this worked out too.

Not sure where you live - I am in the US and I haven't had any problems getting copies of tests, MRI scans etc. Whenever I have an MRI, I am given the disc right then to take to my neuro's office. My neuro is sent the written report of the MRI results. When I see my neuro for follow up, I bring the MRI disc. He looks at it then, and reviews it with me. I only get a copy of the radiologists report if I ask for it. Sorry you are feeling stressed out.

Nevertheless, if you feel strongly about not having a CT scan, you can call your doctor and tell him or her that you want an MRI instead of a CT scan. But be aware that your insurance may decline to cover the cost of the MRI since CTs are the standard for a 21 y/o male patient.
