Mri scan and claustrophobia

Common Questions and Answers about Mri scan and claustrophobia

mri-scan

Avatar f tn I need a CT scan unrelated to MS, so I called to make an appointment with a huge chain of imaging centers near here. During the inevitable long wait on hold, I heard over and over their canned ad, including an announcement about a new 3T MRI machine, *open*. I've never heard of this! Have any of you? This is not something I personally would use, because my claustrophobia is very minimal, and I've had many MRIs in closed machines, so I'm used to them.
Avatar n tn Check around local hospitals and imaging centers and see if anyone has an open MRI. The machine in more like a CT scanner and you don't have to go in a tube. Good luck, hope your area has one.
Avatar f tn http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnetic_resonance_imaging The above link tells you pretty much everything you didn't want to know about MRIs. I had a brain MRI one time, I had to be sedated because I was afraid of it, they even have a little mirror in there so you can see out of it, sort of claustrophobic in the machine, and they had a microphone and radio in there so I could talk to the techs. When the machine started up, it was VERY loud, surprised me, kind of made a bumping racket.
2076644 tn?1331837159 If the pain goes through to your back, it could be the gallbladder, which is tucked in under the liver. There are other tests they can do to check the gallbladder (scan it for stones, or a HIDA scan to test function). In some areas, there are "Open MRI" machines you could go to. My mother has significant claustrophobia and can only go in an Open MRI. You could ask your doctor if there's one nearby. You could also get a sedative during the MRI. Don't worry yet.
Avatar m tn t do because of extreme claustrophobia, then an ERCP which had undefined as the result, and finally a HIDA scan which showed the results that my gallbladder only had an 11% ejection rate. After the HIDA scan I have not been able to contact the surgeon or gallbladder specialist and my symptoms have continued and some have worsened. When having extreme pain some days it leads to nausea and vomiting to some times foaming at the mouth when vomiting.
1453990 tn?1329231426 5 T scanner, and they slid me into the bore and never moved the table for the entire scan. They were done non-contrast and contrast in under 45 min. That's what makes me think they didn't shoot the c-spine. I'll just have to see what the report says. Valium worked fine. No claustrophobia this time.
Avatar f tn I asked for an mri and she refused. Should I consult another Gastroenterologist?
Avatar n tn It was such a piece of cake. It looks like a big donut and about the same thickness and you just lay down and go in and out of it. It wasn't anything like a tunnel. More like literally... a standing donut. It was over in about 4 minutes. Don't be afraid.
Avatar n tn It is a relaxation method, where one masters breathing and take stock of body before MRI and learns to control body’s response and stress generated by MRI. If this fails, you will need the help of an anesthesiologist for getting the procedure done under general anesthesia. Hope this helps. Take care.
Avatar f tn I have claustrophobia problems and had a difficult time with a bone scan but not with the MRI. I hope it goes fine for you.
Avatar f tn However, you could get a rousing headache. The MRI noise and racket is appalling. Better to limit yourself to one glass of beer.
Avatar f tn I was getting an MRI of my neck, I do not have claustrophobia, I had an mri in 2011 no problems. This time when the mri machine started the test it stimulated my heart rate up to 175bpm and thats at rest.. not a good feeling to say the least.

646410 tn?1247251853 One of my 3 cats was the runt of the litter. His brother has groomed him more than he has himself from day 1. They've been with us for over 7 years. Ricky's always had problems with the litter box, has intermittent diarrhea, and we're assuming he's the one that relieves himself right outside the litter box. Is his problem a fear of discomfort from illnesses or is it possible he's claustrophobic? We've tried going with an uncovered litter box, but it is SO messy.
1603534 tn?1297861193 I'm not really sure what's going on with me. I've read a number of other posts on the same subject, but they describe symptoms I don't suffer from. While driving I often get a strange feeling in my head. I'm not sure how to describe it. It's like a weird numbness of my brain, like it's trying to shut down on me. Sometimes I feel a weird twinge/tingling. Anyways, when this happens it is almost always accompanied by difficulty staying awake.
963268 tn?1312900315 s what I would do. The one MRI I had in an open-bore machine was useless, and I really regretted the time and money spent doing it.
Avatar f tn If it is anything like a CT scan with contrast - the waiver form for the dye injection had too many side effects listed so don't read the fine print. Did feel a slight warm sensation when dye was injected. If you are not claustrophobic to begin with it's not a big deal...CT scan only lasted 15 minutes. Just relax when they do it.
Avatar n tn related to the discomfort and anxiety of just being in the noisy big machine, the anxiety about what the MRI will show, and the sedation given to some people before their MRI is done. Claustrophobia can cause significant psychological stress that can persist for days after the MRI in some patients. In addition, there may be side effects related to gadolinium administration. The most concerning and most publicized one is systemic sclerosis in patients with kidney problems.
Avatar n tn Without getting into all the details, I left w/o my MRI. BTW....the insurance company approved a brain MRI and not neck MRI. The dr. had actually requested brain and neck to put my mind at ease. I haven't had any burning really....in about 6 mts at this point. Well, today my face is starting to burn again. I left out that back in 2003 through current, when I speak of burning, it's usually my face now. I mean...it feels like it's been steam burned. No redness...nothing.
Avatar f tn just tender and kind of a burning sensation in the general area). I had a check-up with my oncology surgeon yesterday and he has ordered a CAT/PET scan, as he said there is a very remote possibility a lymph node between my ribs could be affected. I have two questions: 1) I've never had a PET or CAT scan; what I can expect from the experience? Any helpful tips for avoiding claustrophobia? 2) If a person's sentinel nodes are clear, can cancer spread in other ways?
984138 tn?1359813073 although i will not get another mri that is closed !i seemed to gain anxiety and claustrophobia from sooo many of them.. last time i squeezed the alrm ball and threw up ..i cant do it , so i have to find an open mri and hopefully insurance will cover it! the first 3 to 4 were fine but the more i done the more scared i have become!
1179332 tn?1297478990 I just had my 6 month post op MRI on Tuesday (no results yet) and during the procedure I started to feel the pressure feeling in my head and it started to throb. Also my neck started to really hurt and I could feel the pain spiking down my spine. I started to get a headache after but I figured that it was due to the stress of being in the tube so I didn't worry about it too much. This morning I woke up with a horrible headache...
Avatar f tn This topic came up not too long ago and I think I remember Quix saying the program that runs the mri machine is just as important as the magnet strength. I know this just adds more questions to the mix. I don't know how you would find out about the program, nor wether or not a particular program is considered to be good or not. All things being equal the 3T has got to be better than the 1.5T (maybe twice as good?
Avatar f tn Of course if you are familiar with reasons a CT scan is preferable to the MRI for back and abdominal pain, I would like to know this before I call the office on Monday. Right now I am also wondering if I shouldn't have a pelvic ultrasound first to rule out another ovarian cyst with pain referring higher. Thanks!
