Common Questions and Answers about Motor speech disorder definition

speech

Avatar f tn Look up sensory integration disorder and how it effects speech. My son has sensory integration disorder and speech is affected. How does your child do with fine motor skills by the way? Very often processing disorders are the culprit for what you describe. In the area of motor planning and one other area-------- auditory processing. Some kids hear all things at the same volume------- child breathing next to them, mower outside, mother's voice asking a question.
Avatar f tn He has not been diagnosed, although they think he has something which is in the spectrum of autism disorder. But does have a speech and language disorder. He ahs the understanding of a 2.5year old! Its very frustrating, he finds it very difficult to understand what im sayin. Its the same for me when i try to understand what he's trying to say. He's slowly getting better since he started school last september.
Avatar f tn My son has sensory integration disorder and the first signs that a preschool teacher noticed were garbled speech and frequent tripping. This was because my son has some issues with motor planning which controls/organizes our processes to say the words and carry out motor activities. The other reason why it is important to address speech early on is because having issues with speech can hinder social growth. It is hard to play with friends if you can't communicate with them.
20896457 tn?1592763839 With that said, my son has something called sensory processing disorder. Tripping frequently is a sign as is garbled speech. When you do a speech eval, they check the three areas of speech which are articulation (the ability to understand the words she is saying), expressive language (ability to formulate what to say to others) and receptive language (ability to understand and process what is said to her).
Avatar m tn Has anyone every mentioned sensory integration disorder to you? That could affect speech and eating. Motor planning is a big part of speech and motor planning is part of the sensory system. This is the part of the nervous system that organizes and coordates functions of the brain. You must organize the thought and then the motor componant must work properly to make the sounds. Motor planning also plays a role in eating. Chewing takes a lot of motor control.
Avatar m tn We had to teach him the skills needed to interact and play. Motor plannning is also part of sensory integration disorder and this can greatly affect speech. Articulation can be affected due to motor issues, obviously. But the more pragmatic areas of speech (organizing thought to say what you want to say ---- expressive and taking in what someone else has said to you-------- receptive) can also be affected by motor planning.
1650944 tn?1301765794 Many kids with motor planning issues will avoid a task completely that challenges them. Also, speech is part of motor planning and all areas of speech can be affected. My son had some articulation problems which that would again be muscle control to make the sounds. But other areas such as receptive/expressive speech can be involved as motor planning contributes to organizing thought to converse and what to say.
Avatar m tn Motor planning is a componant of the sensory system and this can affect many things including speech. There are three parts of speech, receptive (taking in what someone says to you), expressive (organizing thought and thinking of how to respond and expressing yourself) and articulation (making the sounds of the words). You have to have all three in place in order to have proper speech. Perhaps your son has a break down in understanding what is said to him?
Avatar f tn It involves many things and kids that have trouble with it show early to have speech issues and tripping frequently. Speech can be affected by motor planning in that it first the brain has to organize what is being said to him and make sense of it, then the brain has to organize what the response should be and then the brain has to send the signals to the oral motor muscles to articulate the sounds. All three parts are motor planning issues. Organization of thought is a big one.
Avatar f tn It would be sensible to speak with her pediatrician and see if she should be evaluated by a Speech/Language pathologist for the purpose of assessing her swallowing process and the status of her oral muscles.
Avatar f tn Hi there. We also had a traumatic bith of my first child------ latent phase labor of three days until it was realized that something was wrong. I was so sick by the time he was born that it is all a blur. AND, my son has a developmental delay. A developmental delay does not mean a child isn't smart of have a high/normal IQ. My son is quite bright. But his nervous system does not work properly at times. His developmental delay is called sensory integration disorder.
Avatar f tn My son is not autistic but has motor planning issues that affected speech. I would look up sensory integration disorder or processing disorder and see if anything looks familiar. What is hard is that your son is still so long, trying to figure out exactly what is going on is really difficult. My son had some symptoms of sensory but grew into more of them. By 4, we had no doubts. I will tell you though-------- with intervention, my son functions pretty close to normal.
Avatar n tn My 4 year old grandson has a good vocabulary and pronunciation skills yet he cannot put a sentence together in the way the words should be arranged. His fine motor skills are not good and he doesn't want to be engaged in activities that could help them without forcing the issue. My question - does the part of the brain that controls the fine motor skills have anything to do with the part used to make complete sentences?
Avatar f tn Consult specialist for better result & good condition for your lovely son. Below information may be helpful to u. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, ADHD, is one of the most common mental disorders that develop in children. Children with ADHD have impaired functioning in multiple settings, including home, school, and in relationships with peers. If untreated, the disorder can have long-term adverse effects into adolescence and adulthood.
Avatar m tn Hi there. Well, I'd set up an appt. right away with his pediatrician/doctor. Tell them that he is not able to understand. While others think he is not listening to them, he may really not be understanding/comprehending what they are saying. Finding out WHY that is --- is so very important. I'm sure you've had his hearing checked to rule that out. If not, do so. But then ---- what is the break down for him?
Avatar n tn With sensory integration disorder that has all of the behaviors you mentioned, a child can also have issues with speech. Motor planning is part of the sensory system and if this is out of wack--- speech can be difficult. To get the oral motor muscles to function just right to make the sounds as well as organizing the thoughts all takes good motor planning. How are his fine motor skills (also affected by motor planning).
Avatar m tn My son has sensory integration disorder. There is a spectrum to sensory integration disorder and this young lady sounds like she may fall within. An occupational therapist diagnosis it and can do wonders. You can look them up in the phone book and call asking if they specialize in sensory. Many insurances cover it. Motor planning can make fine and gross motor actitivities difficult. Kids with sensory will often avoid things that challenge them.
Avatar n tn I would look into sensory integration disorder as well. Processing problems can also cause these issues including speech problems. Motor planning is necessary for organizing speech and for organizing play. An occupational therapist usually gives a diagnosis of sensory processing disorder. If you are interested in more info, let me know.
Avatar f tn Could be. Could also be a speech delay or disorder. I would ask for a referral to a speech language pathologist.
Avatar n tn Good for the parents for recognizing that getting help with speech is important and having her in speech classes. I'd practice all the things she does in speech therapy at home as well. I am sure that they gave you things to do but we really liked the making faces to music and freeze game and various other games. I got a cd called "speechercize" which is really fun oral motor exercise to music plus sounds to work on speech. I got it off of the Internet and I recommend it.
Avatar f tn Hi. It is hard to say if it is more than a global delay. I am so happy that you are looking into ways of helping her. Here in the states, we have a specialty called occupational therapist that really help kids with their challenges. My son has a developmental delay called sensory integration disorder. One area of sensory integration disorder that can cause late walking, speech issues, etc. is in the area of "motor planning".
Avatar f tn There are two types of speech disorders that occur in MS, dysarthrias and dysphonias. Speech problems where the motor muscle components of speech are affected are dysarthrias (these typically affect volume control and articulation) while speech problems that affect voice quality are dysphonias.
1500294 tn?1290272209 Babinsky’s reflex also indicates upper motor neuron damage. Symptoms of lower motor neuron degeneration include, muscle weakness and atrophy, muscle camps, fleeting muscle twitches called fasciculation. These need to be tested with EMG, NCV etc. Take care.
Avatar m tn after exercising, stiffness of bottom of tongue like pulling it, tongue tremor (internal fasics?), occasional slight slurred speech and slight swallowing like lump in throat.Had Otorhinolaryngologist visit which was normal.
Avatar m tn Is it a speech delay or secondary to something like sensory integration disorder in which his motor planning is not functioning properly? But you need an expert to evaluate him to discern which. Since you are his aunt, it is a good question as to what his mother says about it. Is she interested in pursuing an evaluation? Once he is in elementary school (kindergarten) then the school will make screen him and pick up on the speech issues as well.
