I think Jaybay just gave you great advice. Lots of elderly have different side effects than the more common ones. Medications can easily interact and sometimes medications that have been fine for a long time all of a sudden aren't. A gerentologist probably is the best place to look for answers. When my mom was alive, we had a few kinks with her medications.

I do know that all to often things like this are not listed as side effects. The problem is that the doctors and or patients do not report them and so they too often get looked over as is the case here. I am sure there are many documented cases they just are not reported. I am not sure what the protocol is far as doctors reporting side effects but we as Pt's can call the pharmaceutical company and report effects. this will help many.

My question is does the morphine make you really nauseated and throw up. The last few days the side effects have slowed down, but I would still like to hear some suggestions from people in the forum.

Morphine has many side effects. The most dangerous is respiratory depression. Minor degrees of respiratory depression may be detected following standard doses of morphine, but this is not clinically important. Im concerned about side effects from certain meds. that an elderly person was prescibed from a psychiatrist. If you maybe depressed and never took psychotropic drugs, can one side effect lead to screaming uncontrollably. Does your brain reject chemicals that the body doesn't understand.

I have heard that Suboxone could be used for pain in the elderly population to take the place of the many pain medications they may be on. such as morphine and Oxycodone Does anyone do this and how would I approach my Mother's Doctor about this. .

I started taking those before there were generics as well. Not ever any side effects like sleep walking, eating, putting things in cab instead of frig etc.. until they put me on generics. OMG! Chills, body aches, fever or flu like symptoms are all normal side effects of interferon. High doses of vicodin means you're getting a high dose of acetaminophen which can be very liver unfriendly. Those with hepc should not exceed 2000 mg of acetaminophen daily. If you must use pain management drugs for an existing condition perhaps you should talk to your doctor about prescribing something without acetaminophen such as a low dose oxycodone or Tramadol.

I am sorry to hear about your previous reaction to Morphine. Are you experiencing any reaction or similar side effects with the long acting Morphine (Kadian)? As Dmoonchild said Kadian IS Morphine. There are several brand names for MS (Morphine Sulfate)..... but in the end they are all basically the same or similar chemical structure.

I have degenerative joint disease/disk disease and the pain pump was an option along with the spinal cord stimulator but these were/are a last resort for me as I have been on many drugs to control the pain. Nerve blocks helped but remember the nerve does grown back over time.

Caring for elderly seems to result in different outcomes based on who is in charge and I wish that wasn't the case. We are very sorry for your loss. I would have your medical chart noted as often reactions to medications run in families. You may also hallucinate if given morphine. I don't know if this information will help but hallucinations are indeed a side effect of morphine.

SUBOXONE--- HAS anyone that has been on Suboxone ever had the side effect of uncontrollable ITCHING? Scratch till your raw? Or any other side effects that make life more difficult? I was on Suboxone for two years, off for 3 months with opiates, and now on again for a month. I was had been using morphine and detoxed last month relapsed not on morphine but the like as the drs prescribe me morphine and I find the wds to be the same. The effects to me are a bit different between morphine and percodan, vicadin and tyhe like but like already said they are similiar. Throwing up, pains in joints and bones shaky shaky hands RLS depression shall I go. Heck it is bad just like any of the drugs mentioned.
