Avatar n tn Morphine has many side effects. The most dangerous is respiratory depression. Minor degrees of respiratory depression may be detected following standard doses of morphine, but this is not clinically important. With higher doses or in frail patients, the respiratory rate decreases, the patient becomes increasingly sedated, and the pupils very small. One can stop breathing if the respirtory depression is great enough. The pharmacy made an error.
Avatar m tn t experience severe respiratory depression when you combine the percocet with the morphine. If you are not opioid tolerant, you could overdose and die from the combination.
1751415 tn?1315069443 You can consult his intensivist regarding this and dose needs to be monitored because of the risk of undue sedation and respiratory depression. Hope this helps. Take care.
Avatar m tn If you are asthmatic or any other respiratory disorders, then morphine is a bad idea. It's better if you see a physician who would recommend the right pain killer.
Avatar f tn I think a swich from Tramadol to Oxymorphone is a really big leap so watch for severe respiratory depression. Your body will get used to this new med in a week or so and the respiratory depression should subside. Please let us know how it is working for your pain!
Avatar m tn The biggest concern with mixing Morphine with Xanax is the possibility of respiratory depression. You will find better information about the two medications compatibility from your pharmacist. I recently was on MS Contin (long acting morphine) and my PCP allowed me to take Valium at HS with the MS Contin. Obviously Valium and Xanax are similar. She had me take it first in the day time a few times when my husband was home to see how it would affect me.
Avatar f tn The primary problem with all opiates is respiratory depression. A person who has regularly used opiates may withstand high doses without compromisimg respiratory status. On the other hand, a person who uses only low-dose may experience respiratory compromise at a much lower dose. I urge you to look on the internet for the excellent article on back pain resolution by Dr. Jerome Groopman, in the New Yorker Magazine.
Avatar f tn Morphine is a respiratory depressent. Taking too much will cause you to stop breathing, which results in an end to your life. The dose to do so varies. People that have been on opiates for a long time can ingest a dose that would kill someone who has never used the drug. Then if they stop for a while, their tolerance goes down. Morphine is a terrible trip, with nausea and discomfort and constipation. Not something to desire for recreation.
Avatar m tn Bryce, it is very important that you understand that one of the main adverse affects of most, if not all opiates is respiratory depression. In your case, it happens at night and presents itself as CSA (central sleep apnea). You probably already know what my answer is going to be: if you stop using opiates, in your case Morphine, the adverse effect will also go away. My concern is this: you did not tell me what you are taking it for, and what is your plan of stopping.
Avatar m tn The question I have now is why did the anaphalatic reaction come after the respiratory depression day. Am I having an anaphalactoid reaction and an anaphalaxis reaction? Talked to my family and it turns out both my aunt and mom have this. Both almost died in surgeries due to Low BP at the end due to the extended narcotics. WIll I ever be able to take low doses again as I was before?
Avatar m tn In the case of opiates this means that there will be an increased risk of respiratory depression. Codeine is one of these drugs because the CYP 450 enzymes are necessary to change it into morphine. Lone-term users of opiates have an increased tolerance for higher doses and the chances are that you would stop breathing are very slim.
Avatar m tn in the conversion, as getting some withdrawal is better than getting fatal respiratory depression-- something that really does occur, particularly when dealing with high doses of these medications. The withdrawal should be over within a few days-- once your body fat 'fills up' with the fentanyl, the blood level rises-- and the opiate effect increases, sometimes dramatically.
Avatar m tn Can it only cause permanent brain damage if I stopped breathing? (aka respiratory depression, which did NOT happen). Or is it like heroin where it would destroy your brain cells right then and there? So to recap, I did this on 2 occasions, one time when I was 14 and one time when I was 16. At the time I did not know 80mg of OxyContin was so much, and I have never done it Since and I will never do it again.
Avatar f tn Morphine slows down your respiratory system and in large enough doses, stops the breathing all together. - learned this from experience with my sister who was signed up with hospice.
Avatar m tn t think 8 or even 12 Tylenol would provide you with enough pain relief if you normally take morphine. Maybe there is another pain med you could try?? I was allergic to morphine so I was switched a couple times until I found what worked for me. I hope you find something that works for you. I would suggest bring in a printed list of meds that's covered.
Avatar m tn 7873091 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE] Elderly patients may be more susceptible to respiratory depression and/or respiratory arrest following administration of morphine.
Avatar m tn He now has a temporary ileostomy bag. He spent a total of 36 days in the hospital and was on morphine for almost 2 months. He has been off morphine for a couple of weeks and used Norco for the last 2 weeks and is not using any pain meds now. He has been very depressed since his operation, over 8 weeks ago. I felt I could understand the depression while in a hospital room for a month, but he has been home for over a month and his depression seems to be worse.
Avatar f tn Naloxone is specifically used to counteract life-threatening depression of the central nervous system and respiratory system. It is marketed under various trademarks including Narcan, Nalone, and Narcanti, and has sometimes been mistakenly called "naltrexate." It is not to be confused with Naltrexone, another opioid receptor antagonist with qualitatively different effects, used for dependence treatment rather than emergency overdose treatment.
Avatar f tn Nurofen contains ibuprofen, and the 'plus' is codeine. Codeine is converted to morphine in the liver (to varying degrees in different cultural populations), so from a practical standpoint there is no difference between an addiction to nurophen vs any other opiate, such as oxycodone or heroin.
Avatar n tn If you use Xanax 4mg a day, what is the best pain reflief med you can use without risking serious sedation or respiratory depression? Indeed, does that kind of med exist?
Avatar m tn Opioid therapy conversion needs to be very conservative, because opioid overdose can lead to respiratory depression and may be fatal. Please follow-up with your provider in working out the best possible pain management for you. First of all: 1. What is the dose of the fentanyl patch that you are applying? Is it the equivalent dose of what you are currently on? If not, you may not get equivalent pain relieve from the fentanyl patch.

Avatar n tn Kadian is a Morphine derivative. If he starts acting strange, call 911. That is quite a high dose, I don't care how big he is. Don't take any chances, make the call if you suspect anything.
