mirapex vs sinemet

I have RLS and PLMD. Spent a few years on Sinemet. Several more on Mirapex, now transitioning to Requip. None of these are without potential side effects. My current sleep doctor feels that Sinemet, a dopamine replacement, should be reserved for use after dopamine agonists such as Requip and Mirapex are no longer useful.

I too have been on both of these meds and have had similar issues. Have you been on Sinemet yet? Requip and Mirapex are dopamine agonists, but Sinemet is a dopamine replacement and is best reserved for when the agonists no longer work. SinemetCR worked for me for a few years before the side effects outweighed the decreasing benefits. It's more complicated to optimize it's effectiveness, as one is best served to consider the timing, volume and content of their meals.

Sinemet, Mirapex, Requip and Neurontin. All helped for a while but needed increasing doses and the side effects and augmentation became intolerable. I now use a TENS Unit before bedtime, and it has done as well for me as the meds after their initial usefulness waned. I was on so many meds that made me nauseous I wasn't sure which caused what. But I puked a lot for a while. Somehow I guess I became more tolerant because it did nearly stop. Maybe your body will adjust too.

My father has had RLS for years and taking Sinemet to control it. Lately he has been acting differently almost like he has no control over his arms, mouth and legs. Can taking Sinemet for a long period of time cause Parkinson or similar disorders?

5-6 years ago, she started parkinson treatment as 3 per day 25/100 sinemet. Half year ago, her motion slows down, drooling a lot. Sinemet was increased to 3 per day 25/250. it really helped at first. 2 months later, dyskinesia occurred in tongue/jaw, drooling returned. Sinemet dosage then was decreased to 2 per day 25/250 (9am, 2pm), Requip 0.125 (9pm). Dyskinesia improved. 1.5 month ago, teeth grinding started day and night.

I started taking Sinemet about 3 months ago and my blood sugar levels, insulin resistance are all over the map. In the morning I fight to get my BSs down and now, in the afternoon, I often have BS crashes into severe hypo territory. I've been to the emergency twice these past two weeks - a week ago Friday with hyper, ketones and this last Friday with a severe hypo with 5 units still active!!!

hands... she prescribed Mirapex. I have not started it yet and wondered if anyone out there is using this medication and what your thoughts are. She recommended a TENS unit for the rib pain I guess it's caused from a miss-firing message between my spinal cord and my brain, even though no lesions showed on my thoracic MRI doesn't mean they are not there...hummmm.

PLMD, RLS and apnea. My neuro put me on mirapex immediately upon seeing the results. I actually feel like myself again. I had no idea that I was sleeping so poorly, especially after hearing about so much fatigue from my friends here. I can wake up and actually be awake!! I still shake, twitch, jerk and am quite tingly. But sleeping well sure makes it all more manageable... So for those of you with sleep disorders, or that think you might, ASK about Mirapex!

About 1 1/2 years ago I started taking 25/100 Sinemet 3 times/day. I am now taking 25/250 Sinemet 3 times/day plus 25 mg. additional carbidopa for the nausea I was having from the increase in the Sinemet. My neurologist also started me on .5 mg. of Azilect about a year ago. I am now taking 1 mg. of Azilect daily. All considered, I am still doing quite well and my symptoms appear to only be affecting one side so far. I exercise religiously every morning and still work full time.

Wow Kraz - I am sorry that you have had to deal with the problem from Mirapex. I too have RLS and have been on Mirapex for about 2 years, but fortunately have not had a problem with gambling. I am an addict, but have been doing good with that too. Interesting though, your post made me think, there are other things that if I really look at it, I probably do in excess - and have been doing more since on Mirapex. Wonder if there is a connection there.

I hated that because it worked so well. This as of April 28th. Was started on Sinemet. Was told this does not work as well as Requip, but was less likely to have same side effects. Said he could add darvocet if necesary.Also take ativan 1mg 3 x daily since brain surgery, and 1-2 at night for help with sleep. Every other sleep aid made morning "miseries"symptoms worse. Tapered Requip withdrawal while adding Sinemet. Right now taking 1/2 afternoon and 1 at night.

I am diagnosed with bipolar disorder. i take lithium ER 450mg BID, Mirapex 1mg for RLS, and zoloft 100mg to treat depression. I can usually fall asleep, however i wake and stay up for a few hours every night. i have tried benedryl,klonopin,trazadone,serequil, and elavil for relief however every one of these meds has a paradoxical effect on me. Any suggestions?

The doctor put me on mirapex. She told me it would make me very sleepy and help to control the jerking and twitching at night to allow me to get better sleep. I spent most of my sleep time in phase 2 sleep with very little time in REM. My question is about the mirapex. Have any of you ever had issues falling asleep while on the mirapex? I find that once I do get to sleep it helps me stay asleep better.

I think the one you are thinking about is called Hylands and it is a supplement.

t know about the Monavie but what I take and is wonderful is Mirapex. I take it 3 times a day and have no restless legs unless I skip a dose or run out and then the RLS returns. I hope this has helped.

I had been having a lot of unexplained symptoms such as tremor, muscle twitching and jerking, tingling in my extremeties and severe eye pain and facial numbness. Migraine was ruled out. Since I started on the mirapex most of my symptoms have either gone away completely or greatly diminished. Could they have been simply caused by the sleep deprivation? Thanks for your time.

I'm on .25mg of Mirapex for RLS and am gaining weight. Has anyone else experienced this. Any idea as to why. Suggestions? Thanks!

Because of the Mirapex and Gabapentin I can sleep at all. I still get uncomfortable though. It is pain really, except in my left arm anyway. But, the uncomfortablnes and pain in left arm is toerable. I just need more sleep than i am getting.

I have never tried requip but my doctor has me on Mirapex which works wonders for me. I have also be told that there is an otc called hylands restful leg that works well too. eating bananas and hot baths before bed, helps alot too also stretching exercises, I lay on my stomach and hold on to my ankle and gentle pull back(towards buttocks) just until I feel the tightness, if you do this ever evening just before you go to sleep it helps.

My doctor prescribed Sinemet (generic name: carbadopa/levo) 25/100mg each night, and I no longer have restless legs. I've been taking it for about 4 years now, and as far as I know, I don't have any negative side effects from it. (I know you said you prefer to balance yourself without pharmaceuticals, but if you don't find a way to do that, the Sinemet really works for me.) Sleep is SO important.

Thank you for your feedback. We would also love it if doctors would give out MedHelp's URL to their patients to help track symptoms. Then their patients could just click Email This on their trackers and send it to their doctors for review. We could easily add Restless Legs as a symptom and Mirapex as a treatment to the Sleep Tracker. Would that work for you?

I loose a lot of sleep. I get in day and night. My arms even jerk and have that restless feeling. Mirapex is taken twice a day and don't help. No drs will address it and I'm miserable . Is this a lack of a vitamin or mineral. Do I ever get rid of them?

I have RLS and take Mirapex, .25mg about an hour before bed. It has worked great for me. I tried the Gabapentin and got up to 1200 mg - which was also taken before bed, but it did nothing for me. I have been told that Mirapex works much better than Ropinerol - you may want to talk to your doc about Mirapex as an option - it just went generic.

I've been dealing with horrible spasticity since April and has gotten worse. I don't sleep much anymore at night and I work full time. My MRI shows no changes (minimal) and thoracic spine has no lesions. I've tried so many medications including sativex. I'm so tired and done with it all. I've also tried amitripyline, carbonmezipine, sinemet, quinine, nabilone and nothing. Please help....
