Avatar f tn For the past month I have been experiencing hypnic jerks that at times last up to 2-3 hours. This makes it very hard to fall asleep. For the past 10 years I have had bad insomnia/anxiety problems. For this I have been on remeron and trazodone which do help the insomnia. At the time the hypnic jerks started I was trying to taper myself off of both the medications. I also started a pretty intense exercise regimine as I also have a very bad back and neck (compressed nerves).
Avatar m tn I like many of you, have suffered from Hypnic Jerks for many years. I found a "good deal" of wine put me to sleep without one jerk to be had but decided this wasn't helping my liver!!! I have had to resort to sleeping tablets - in NZ they are called Clonazepam. I have been reading your forum with great interest and have decided to try the Gatorade. I do have back problems and have always thought this was the underlying source of my jerking problems but it appears not.
Avatar n tn Hello all to those that experience "hypnic jerks" I was experiencing them every night for a month until I went for a general adjustment at the chircopactor. They stopped almost immediately after the adjustment only with one or two jerks later. its been about week since the adjustment and I now I sleep like a baby! So before you start labeling your condition with all fancy names - just go to the chiropactor for an adjustment.
Avatar f tn It’s estimated that around 70% of people experience hypnic jerks at some point in their lives. I know I definitely have. Different names The world of sleep can be confusing, and there’s no exception when it comes to the hypnic jerk. Confusing because it’s also sometimes called by one of the following names: •Night starts. •Sleep starts. •Hypnagogic jerk – hypnagogic being a term used to describe the period of time when falling asleep.
Avatar f tn I am very prone to hypnic jerks when falling asleep. But in the middle of my day, living my life, I still get those little jumps/jerks/twitches , whatever you want to call them - in my hands and only my hands. I also notice sometimes if I watch someone boxing or doing a combat sport, sometimes more of my body gets a little jumpy. As if I'm reacting to what the person is doing. All of this movement is involuntary.
Avatar f tn Has anyone experienced severe hypnic jerks? My arms cross or straighten and stiffen. My head can turn to the right. My right arm can fly across my body. My hands can tremor. These movements are involuntary. I have been diagnosed with hypnic jerks and restless legs & arms. I am taking gabapentin which works for my legs, but not my arms. The leg movements can be voluntary, but the arm movements are not.
2064685 tn?1331038244 It is very common to have these hypnic jerks right before falling asleep. However, if your significant other is saying that it is happening throughout the night, then I think you should make a doctor's appointment to see what they say about it. It could be caused by any number of things including anxiety and that is why you should be evaluated.

Avatar f tn Is your tinnitus on one side or both? Do you only hear it in quiet environments? Noise exposure can cause tinnitus, and it's actually pretty common, though most people are able to ignore tinnitus and not let it affect their life. I would think that lack of sleep could certainly cause you to feel a little imbalanced. Also, I notice that when I'm very tired (sleep-deprived), my tinnitus is "louder." Jerks when falling asleep are common (look up "hypnic jerks").
Avatar f tn I keep reading about how hypnic jerks are normal but is it possible to have too many of them or have them too often? I seem to have a few every night. I sometimes only jerk in one leg or in my hands. Wake myself of course. Why does this happen so much?

Avatar n tn I've experienced a hypnic jerk many times over the years but in the last few weeks i've been experiencing something that is similar but not quite the same. It occurs at the same point, just as i'm drifting off and unaware of my surroundings and suddenly I will wake up (and by wake up I mean completely), with a slight, very quiet gasp and the feeling of having been startled as well as the sensation that I have been holding my breath (which was very scary at first).
Avatar f tn Hi John, how are you? I hope you are doing well now and able to get a good sleep? Hypnic jerks/sleep jerks or twitches which are normal. Those seen while falling asleep or while waking up are also normal. You might be probably too stressed due to personal reason or lack of sleep. Try to relax and keep physically active by doing regular walks, stretches, and yoga/meditation. It is better to consult a neurologist for an evaluation and also a sleep specialist for better care.

Avatar m tn 5 mg of Klonopin, 100 mg of Lamictal, and 50 mg of Trazadone. Initially, I had some feet jerking, which I attributed to hypnic jerks, but in the past week I have developed twitches all over my body. Even scarier, at night, my head and neck twitch and jerk at night. Any idea what this could be? Could it be medication side effects? Post-acute withdrawal?

Within 15 minutes, a full body jerk that wakes me fully, and increases my heart rate. 20-30 minutes later I will doze off again, and the cycle will repeat. I haven't gotten a good nights sleep in about ten days, since this started. Medications: Zoloft 100mg q1d, Trazodone 100mg 1-2 hs Mirena IUD - 4 months left in it's life.
Avatar f tn The jolts we get when falling asleep are called hypnic jerks, and actually they're very normal. Loads of people without MS get them, and they're nothing to worry about. Maybe MS people's are worse, I don't know. Wikipedia describes hypnic jerks quite well. The abnormal kind are called myoclonus, or myoclonic jerks. Some people confuse these with twitches, but they're very different.
12680650 tn?1427307118 hypnic jerks, hynagogic jerks, myoclonic jerks, myoclonus, etc. I've experienced it many times. Sometimes people get the sudden feeling that they're falling, which causes them to awake with a startle. It's just one of those weird things the human body does that you don't need to be concerned about.
Avatar m tn There is something called hypnic jerks that occur when transitioning sleep stages. This is a normal occurance. It is not uncommon for those with RLS to also have Periodic Limb Movement Disorder, and the jerks can feel shock-like, though generally are more like contractions. Are you on medication for the RLS?
Avatar n tn Hi, welcome to the forum, it can be restless leg syndrome or night starts (hypnic jerks). The causes of Restless leg syndrome are peripheral neuropathies, vitamin and minerals deficiencies, lumbosacral radiculopathy, spinal stenosis, excess caffeine intake, hypoglycemia, and hypothyroidism. He needs to undergo spinal radio imaging, blood sugar and thyroid status to rule out the cause. Pertaining to this I suggest him to consult a neurologist to rule out the cause and treatment accordingly.
