While driving is tough. Can you set aside atleast an hour for just you everyday? Spend it completely for yourself. Not work or studying. 1641772 tn?1301357889 I use his series 1 CDs and have done so for many years. He is the pioneer of mindfulness and stress reduction programs in hospitals. If you like yoga find a school or community centre that offers it or just do it to a cd such as the one by Kabat-Zinn. If you enjoy meditation you can also do it to these CDs and/or go to a temple or centre that does group meditation or instruction.
Avatar n tn Mindfulness meditation (your local hospital may offer courses based on the work of Jon Kabat-Zinn, or you can google him and find more information about his approach). 3. See a psychiatrist. If you are feeling depressed or anxious, even if it is obviously due to these experiences of pain, your mood can contribute to the problems. In that case getting help with your mood can make a big difference.
Avatar m tn I find that during the day, if I do some sort of meditation according a Mindfulness practice, that I am more relaxed when going to sleep. "Full Catasrophe Living" by Jon Kabat-Zinn is a good starter book for meditation and health, proven to work in a clinical setting. I also do some visualization techniques when going to sleep, imagining either one of my "happy places," or something that has a lulling repetitive motion, like a camel walking in the desert, or falling snow.
Avatar m tn absolutely it has been more helpful to me than any other thing. Explore mindfulness with Jon Kabitt Zinn (sp?) i do a section of his cd every morning, helps ground me thru the day, I get excited when someone else is interested in this and finds it helpful.
Avatar m tn What helped me was meditation where you learn to listen to your own body,A great meditation CD I used was Mindfulness Meditation by Robert Kabat-Zinn,give it a try, what have you got to lose,I have learnt how to shut down now.
Avatar m tn Look up MBSR (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction) online. I have been getting into meditation and yoga and reading Jon Kabat-Zinn's book "Full Catastrophe Living". It is incredible the things that come up for people when they learn how to 'get still' and tap into what's going on internally. I have been on benzo's myself. Not a huge fan of xanax. I'm now on a generic for Klonopin. Not impressed with that either.
1480087 tn?1288019577 There are many ways this can happen. Stress and depression lower the pain threshold. Also sleep disruption lowers the pain threshold and predisposes to various kinds of muscle and joint pains. (And of course it works the other way as well). For something that helps all of these conditions consider listening to mindfulness meditation audios (you can search Amazon for MP3's). I especially like Jon Kabat-Zinn's stuff.
345079 tn?1299202476 Oh sorry the link didnt work. Glad you were able to get that book!
405614 tn?1329144114 One other thing people might want to check out is Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, which is a secular, meditation-based program that is used a lot for people with chronic pain. This practice uses a kind of body awareness meditation and there has been quite a bit of research on this method (see http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?db=pubmed&cmd=DetailsSearch&term=mindfulness+based+stress+reduction or http://tinyurl.com/83cltn). There are CDs available at http://www.
1951383 tn?1325208580 if you think about what we put our muscles through when we are anxious it only makes sense.
Avatar f tn Well there are things that can help like exercising every day for atleast 30 minutes, meditation daily, yoga, learning and practicing mindfulness(there are lots of books, Jon Kabat Zinn is one author) learning deep breathing exercises. Over proper diet. The better we treat our bodies, the better we can feel. CBT is also another way that can help people control their anxiety, other therapy. Always ensure that there is no medical cause for your anxiety and keep your doctor up to date.
1618806 tn?1304734477 com and Jon Kabitt-Zinn (sp?) mindfulness. It calms the mind and body and is woonnddeerrful. Also pay attention you are breathing from your abdomen, in 4 out 4. it is so hard to not completely turn our focus inward and create alot of suffering, Eckhart Tolle writes excellent books on mindfulness as well. Good luck, we are all on this journey together. The people that answer alot on this forum have alot of insight to offer and i have found their advice most helpful.
333672 tn?1273792789 Interesting study that compares people with MS who went through a mindfulness meditation training program with those receiving just regular medical care. "Those who went through the mindfulness program improved in nearly every measure of fatigue, depression and quality of life, while those who received usual medical care declined slightly on most of the measures." http://www.physorg.com/news204826412.
11079760 tn?1483386130 Jon Kabat-Zinn's Mindfulness for Pain Relief is similar to the Cognitive Therapy approach for people dealing with chronic pain. I've used several of his other mindfulness exercise recordings and have found them helpful. I'm not sure if the link will go through, but Amazon has it under "Mindfulness Meditation for Pain Relief: Guided Practices for Reclaiming Your Body and Your Life" http://www.amazon.
15695260 tn?1549593113 Mindfulness Meditation. (There are some apps which teach this. 'Headspace', (I forget the other one)) This will help strengthen certain areas of the brain, which leads to stress reduction (and other health benefits). A few minutes a day for 2 months should show some results. There's also mindfulness motion exercises: Qi-Gong, Tai-Chi, Yoga (Therapeutic yoga. Too many types of yogas.) There may be some meditation classes nearby. Or Buddhist places often have meditation classes.
Avatar f tn I was listening to a mindfulness meditation cd by John Kabat-Zinn and he said that some people had made more improvement with mindfulness than traditional therapy. That could be another option. I am only at the very beginning of my recovery, although it has been some years, and I know that good therapy can make a huge difference. I have found viewing the personality in terms of splits useful. It has helped me understand a lot about myself and about my anxiety.
Avatar n tn talking to my therapist helps a lot and i am also taking a class called MBSR (mindfulness based stress reduction) which was started in 1979 by a gentleman named Jon Kabat-Zinn for people with chronic pain. it helps me deal with my chronic pain more effectively through breathing techniques, meditation and gentle yoga. (if interested, just google in Mr. Kabat-Zinn's name for more info and classes in your area) it has made a world of difference!! i am just sharing what has worked for me!!
Avatar m tn I have not seen this as a symptom of mania, but it certainly fits with what we know of the brain changes that take place with mania - essentially there is a reduction in self monitoring for mistakes and errors (the part of the brain that performs that function has reduced activity on functional brain scans in mania).
Avatar f tn You might also want to consider trying to find a program in mindfulness meditation. Jon Kabat-Zinn developed a program using mindfulness meditation to help folks with chronic pain and/or chronic medical illnesses to live full lives that has been very successful, and a number of hospitals offer programs modeled on his.
396680 tn?1208070334 If not maybe you are lucky enough to have a GP who is more knowlegeable than others. Have you ever heard of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR). It is a program that is based on meditation. You can do a search on the web by pluggin in MBSR. I also suggest a book by Jon Kabat Zinn (he developed MBSR) called "Full Catastrophe Living." Jon Kabat-Zinn developedthe University of Massachusetts Medical Centers Stress Reduction Clinic.
Avatar m tn There is taming your gremlin, Eckhart Tolle has many helpful books, Mindfulness from Jon Kabitt Zinn, The anxiety and phobia workbook. While as yet I am not aware of anyone who is "cured" I know many who have regained control of their life by learning to accept that we have this issue, that fighting is not the answer, and oh, another super helpful approach is Susan Jeffers "feel the fear and do it anyway".
Avatar n tn Have you been under a lot of stress lately? Did your panic attacks start because of something that happened in your life? Anxiety can definitely hinder your sleep patterns in my opinion. Anxiety can be a tough nut to crack sometimes but there are ways to confront and deal with it in my opinion. Why not go get checked out by your doctor and maybe get referred to a therapist? For me, just talking through it shed some light on a very confusing and scary subject with great results...
