Avatar f tn Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn, founder of the Stress Reduction Clinic at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, teaches individuals to train their minds to cope with stress more skillfully (I discovered Rick Hanson through Karen Sothers, who teaches MBSR at the Scripps Institute for Integrative Medicine in San Diego, California).
333672 tn?1273792789 FWIW, the mindfulness meditation used in this study, although based on practices from the Buddhist tradition, is taught in a completely secular context as developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts (http://www.umassmed.edu/content.aspx?id=41252). There has been quite a bit of research showing its effectiveness in helping people cope with depression and chronic pain. There are some CDs and tapes available from http://www.mindfulnesstapes.
Avatar m tn Look up MBSR (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction) online. I have been getting into meditation and yoga and reading Jon Kabat-Zinn's book "Full Catastrophe Living". It is incredible the things that come up for people when they learn how to 'get still' and tap into what's going on internally. I have been on benzo's myself. Not a huge fan of xanax. I'm now on a generic for Klonopin. Not impressed with that either.

The new antibody effectively neutralized the virus in culture, and then prevented infection by the virus in a pre-clinical animal model of the disease.
405614 tn?1329144114 One other thing people might want to check out is Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, which is a secular, meditation-based program that is used a lot for people with chronic pain. This practice uses a kind of body awareness meditation and there has been quite a bit of research on this method (see http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?db=pubmed&cmd=DetailsSearch&term=mindfulness+based+stress+reduction or http://tinyurl.com/83cltn). There are CDs available at http://www.
15695260 tn?1549593113 Mindfulness Meditation. (There are some apps which teach this. 'Headspace', (I forget the other one)) This will help strengthen certain areas of the brain, which leads to stress reduction (and other health benefits). A few minutes a day for 2 months should show some results. There's also mindfulness motion exercises: Qi-Gong, Tai-Chi, Yoga (Therapeutic yoga. Too many types of yogas.) There may be some meditation classes nearby. Or Buddhist places often have meditation classes.
Avatar m tn I have not seen this as a symptom of mania, but it certainly fits with what we know of the brain changes that take place with mania - essentially there is a reduction in self monitoring for mistakes and errors (the part of the brain that performs that function has reduced activity on functional brain scans in mania).

967168 tn?1477584489 is a great, great book by Eckhart Tolle. Buddhist philosophy, of course, is all based on mindfulness which is harnessed through meditation practice. Some people do not need to read much to be aware and in the moment. It just comes naturally and they have the inner knowing of appreciation of what life is really about. Like you. Others need constant reminders. Happy Holidays to all!
1168718 tn?1464983535 t tell me to adopt lifestyle changes except one stress reduction. I am the most anxious person on the planet. People do not see it because I appear calm and happy but I am now seriously tackling the stress. For me it is life and death whether I get a handle on it. I need to calm my body processes to survive. My brother is pretty stressed as well. Last night I went to sleep with a "Mindfulness" audible book going. I was in pain and I went into five crying jags yesterday.

Another book that uses principles of MBSR is "Calming Your Anxious Mind" by Jeffrey Brantley, MD. I was lucky enough to be able to attend MBSR in my home town led by a MBSR trained person. It helped me tremendously and it continues to help me every day. Good Luck.
Avatar f tn Most articles I've read on naringenin/grapefruit juice point the research that's been done at the Massachusetts general hospital. They've discovered it may inhibit viral replication by interfering with secretion of new virus particles from infected cells. This compound may be able to block the secretion of the hcv virus from infected cells, a process needed to maintain chronic infection.
Avatar n tn Much of the advertising with statins describe a 36% risk reduction in heart attacks. This is a relative risk reduction. The absolute risk reduction is a decrease from a 3% risk to a 2% risk. In practical terms, this means that in men under the age of 65 with pre-existing heart disease, 100 (the NNT- Number Needed to Treat) have to take a statin for 3 years to prevent 1 heart attack. The other 99 men receive no benefit.
667078 tn?1316000935 There were a bunch of things on dealing with Stress and Mindfulness Meditation. All things I needed to be reminded of. It is great to be alive today and out in the world. I have been so sick and being in bed gets old.
