Avatar f tn My grandfather has been diagnosed with acute liver failure very recently and doctors have said there’s nothing more they can do. Would it be harmful to give him milk thistle at this point?
Avatar n tn Hi, about three months ago, during a routine blood test, my liver enzymes were elevated in the 700 and 800 range. I went to a specialist, and he ordered tests, blood tests, and a sonogram, and a fecal test. All of my tests came back normal, and all types of hepatitis were ruled out. After subsequent blood tests, my enzyme count went down to just under 300, but in the latest test, they were back up to 500.

Avatar m tn A standard supplement to detoxify the liver is milk thistle. My sister had liver cancer and part of her liver was removed. She refused chemotherapy and went natural. Part of her treatment was milk thistle. She has been cancer free for eight years. Whether this was primarily due to milk thistle no one will ever know. In any case milk thistle is used for all sorts of liver ailments.
Avatar f tn My theory was that consumption of liquor (although not exceesive) was causing my liver to function improperly, thereby setting off a chain reaction that resulted in terrible acid reflux every time I ate. I read that milk thistle is a great detox after alcohol comsuption, so I decided to give it a try. A week into it, I was completely off of the acid reflux meds and symptom free. I want to share this with others in case it might work for them too, so spread the news!
Avatar f tn I’ve been taking milk thistle to detox my liver too. MT is the #1 herb, it contains silymarin, a flavonoid that aids in healing and rebuilding the liver. I’ll stop it a month before tx.
Avatar f tn re describing is a combination colon/liver cleanse. Milk thistle and yellowdock, for example, are liver cleansers, and could theoretically wash some of the medication out of our system, as the body sees virtually all medication as toxic. There are colon cleanses that don't contain liver cleansing herbs, just colon cleansers, which are abrasives and sometimes laxatives that are intended to clean out that system. You might want to look into those next time.
Avatar f tn Hi Mel - I have heard that milk thistle is very good for your liver. Look it up. My friend was married to the footballer George Best who died of liver failure due to being an alocholic. He wrecked his transplant. She is an expert on vits and supps. I was told this milk thistle is good for you. I tried to get my husband to take some but he has trouble taking the stuff prescribed such as Thiamine, Vit B complex and ferrous sulphate.
Avatar m tn ...just called today + he was referring to being Surface Antigen Negative, as the virus has been undetectable for the last 3 months. He stated that this is rare 1 to 3 % of all cases. I personally feel all of the "alternative" therapy has helped a lot (milk thistle, cranberry juice/detox tea to keep everything flushed out).
408795 tn?1324935675 Silibinin (SIL) is the main flavonoid extracted from milk thistle (Silibum marianum G). Although widely used for treatment of liver diseases, the efficacy of the oral preparation is unclear. Substantially higher doses can be administered intravenously. METHODS: Pedigreed nonresponders to full-dose pegylated (Peg)-interferon (IFN)/ribavirin (RBV) (PegIFN/RBV) were studied.
Avatar n tn Why are you considering taking milk thistle? Do you have liver disease? Milk thistle hasn’t really shown much in the way of clinical evidence of being effective for treating liver injury.
Avatar f tn Milk Thistle is good for the liver, as it helps the liver to rid itself of toxins. You do not want to take it while on treatment though, as it will rid the liver of the treatment drugs. You want them to stay in you liver as long as possible, as you want the drugs to work. You can find a lot of information on the net, if you google Milk Thistle and Milk Thistle drug interaction. I'm sorry to hear you relapsed.
Avatar m tn Hi, Peteshine, nice to meet you. Sorry it has to be under these conditions but onward and upward, right? Following your standard healthy diet that's high in vegetables and whole grains and low in processed foods, red meats and sugars is a good bet. It can get more specific. Certain whole grains may be better than others, for example. gauf, from the Hep C board has a journal entry under his profile that discusses a liver friendly diet.
Avatar n tn Dandelion root tea and Milk Thistle tea can help to detox the liver. You can find this at health food stores ...

Avatar n tn Milk thistle is known to protect the liver cells that are not damaged, if taken in combination with other supplements it may also help with HCV symptoms. I take Hep C Complete, which has Selenium, Alpha Lipoic Acid and Milk Thistle, to this I add vitamins B, C, E, magnesium and zinc. I suffer fatigue, it used to be a very severe fatigue, but since taking the supplements above my fatigue is now moderate.
Avatar f tn Nobody said milk thistle walls off the liver, preventing it from doing its job. Nobody said milk thistle cures hepatitis. Milk thistle does help cleanse the liver, but that isn't curing anything, it's helping the liver stay healthy. Caveats were expressed on here that taking milk thistle has its cautions and its limits and its benefits. As for peer reviewed science, science isn't a religion, it's just a means of observation.
1154822 tn?1262230166 Yeah, I took it before tx and now that I am SVR, I will prob start it again....but my goal is to have a healthy liver and not need milk thistle or anything else.... Is it good...probably-inconclusive at worst, doesn't hurt at best, maybe.. But I would advise not to take it on tx because there is no conclusive data good or bad....and you for sure don't want to interfer with the tx drugs. No magic bullet is right.....
Avatar f tn I forgot to tell you after you go to mayo clinic review of milk thistle you go to the site that says Milk Thistle and under that it has Mayo Clinic and it does give a web address www.mayoclinic.com/health/silymarin/NS-patient-milkthistle/ I tried it and can't get there so it is easier to just do it like I said.
