Avatar f tn The docs in Germany can prescribe certain herbals and milk thistle is one of the few that can be prescribed. The Complete German Commission E Monographs: Therapeutic Guide to Herbal Medicines is the English translation. If bought new is rather expensive but can be found used... and at many libraries. Of course this means that in Germany herbals are regulated unlike in the USA!!! MT can cleans the liver. I am not sure of the recommended dose.
Avatar m tn Much of what is claimed for many herbals in this country, including some claims for milk thistle, are not backed by research in Germany. What we get over here unfortunately is overwhelmingly snake oil. We don't get that good German research.
Avatar f tn when I mentioned to my doctor that I took MILK THISTLE, he gave me a look of disgust. He never answered me should I not take it...is it just hype, or does it mabey have some benifit?
Avatar f tn In Thailand they prescribed silymarin, the active ingredient in milk thistle for me. It came from a company based in Germany. Milk thistle has been used for centuries in Europe and believed to help protect the liver. I'm sure they used the plant, not some pill form. Perhaps it has more affect in that way, who knows ?
1273473 tn?1270775840 Because standard of care with pegylated interferon plus ribavirin therapy is costly, has significant side effects, and fails to cure about half of all infections, many patients seek complementary and alternative medicine to improve their health, such as Silymarin, derived from milk thistle (Silybum marianum). Milk thistle's clinical benefits for chronic hepatitis C are unsettled due to variability in standardization of the herbal product.
Avatar m tn Bill, I never did take milk thistle but personally can't see the harm, except that I'm conservative about taking too much of anything. Certainly my health food store promotes it and thinks it's a tragedy that I'm on interferon! It's very popular in Europe, especially in Germany. It can provide a false sense of security, though, because your liver can deteriorate, independently of the thistle.
Avatar f tn s Way Brand Milk Thistle, which - according to the packaging - contains 175 mg Milk Thistle extract (seed), 80% silymarin; and 180 mg Blessed Thistle (stern, leaf, flower). Is this safe? Is it helpful? Is there any kind of sensation at the liver site which indicates that you need to seek medical help immediately? I've read on the forum that some people actually experience bleeds. Does this manifest as bruising, or can it happen w/o any visible indications?
2105146 tn?1334593783 Does anyone know if milk thistle is good, bad, or of no effect? I read somewhere that it is helpful for liver problems so started taking it. I won't see my dr. for almost three months so can't ask him until then.
Avatar n tn Why are you considering taking milk thistle? Do you have liver disease? Milk thistle hasn’t really shown much in the way of clinical evidence of being effective for treating liver injury.
408795 tn?1324935675 There are alot of questions in this area about herbs like Milk Thistle and other herbs, sometimes for ppl who were non-responders or ppl who are putting off tx for one reason or another. I just found out thru my job that there is one tx that is being used to tx HepC and it's not approved by the fda and the chamber is to be administered by a medical doctor only. There are so many ppl who are taking advantage of the HepC community to make a fast buck, so I wanted to let you all know.

Cant be absolute if this was because of Milk Thistle or something else.. No diff on ALT remained 80.. rest normal.
Avatar f tn I forgot to tell you after you go to mayo clinic review of milk thistle you go to the site that says Milk Thistle and under that it has Mayo Clinic and it does give a web address www.mayoclinic.com/health/silymarin/NS-patient-milkthistle/ I tried it and can't get there so it is easier to just do it like I said.

Avatar f tn We do have the right to express our opinions, with a few exceptions, health matters being one of them, that arena needs peer reviewed science. Did I miss something regarding milk thistle? The main point seems to be milk thistle "walls" off the live preventing it from doing its job.
Avatar f tn I am planning on going back to get another blood test soon, however, wanted to share with the group that I started taking Milk Thistle about three weeks ago to see whether this might help lower my enzyme levels to normal. What I have been finding is that I no longer need to take the prilosec or zantac, there is something (or appears to be something) in the Milk Thistle that is both helping me feel better as well as well as lowering my need for prilosec or other antacids.
Avatar m tn I was diagnosed with Hep-c and Cirrhosis on Jan.5th 2015.....both Chronic ? My viral load is 676 , my meld score is 12....I have no idea what any of this means ? I'm 54 years old ! He informed me he knows absolutely nothing about liver disease's etc.
