Avatar m tn Can anyone share experience or evidence about effectiveness of milk thistle for liver cirrhosis?
Avatar n tn Why are you considering taking milk thistle? Do you have liver disease? Milk thistle hasn’t really shown much in the way of clinical evidence of being effective for treating liver injury.
Avatar f tn Milk Thistle is good for the liver, as it helps the liver to rid itself of toxins. You do not want to take it while on treatment though, as it will rid the liver of the treatment drugs. You want them to stay in you liver as long as possible, as you want the drugs to work. You can find a lot of information on the net, if you google Milk Thistle and Milk Thistle drug interaction. I'm sorry to hear you relapsed.
Avatar m tn Hi, Peteshine, nice to meet you. Sorry it has to be under these conditions but onward and upward, right? Following your standard healthy diet that's high in vegetables and whole grains and low in processed foods, red meats and sugars is a good bet. It can get more specific. Certain whole grains may be better than others, for example. gauf, from the Hep C board has a journal entry under his profile that discusses a liver friendly diet.

Avatar m tn I think the reasons for saying not to use milk thistle while on treatment are as simple as there is not enough information on whether milk thistle helps or inhibits the treatment process, make side effects better or worse and better to play it safe than sorry and go with knowns while on treatment medications. That's also why alot of herb products are not to be taken while on treatment either.
Avatar n tn I took Milk Thistle 3x daily for a year, hoping it would help my liver while waiting to do tx. It did nothing for me and am in tx now.
Avatar f tn Nobody said milk thistle walls off the liver, preventing it from doing its job. Nobody said milk thistle cures hepatitis. Milk thistle does help cleanse the liver, but that isn't curing anything, it's helping the liver stay healthy. Caveats were expressed on here that taking milk thistle has its cautions and its limits and its benefits. As for peer reviewed science, science isn't a religion, it's just a means of observation.
1154822 tn?1262230166 I have been hearing alot of talk about Milk Thistle being the new magic tonic for the liver, any thoughts on this?
Avatar f tn Has anyone used Milk Thistle for slightly elevated enzymes, and, if so, did it lower them? I've read and heard that Milk Thistle is very good for liver function, and, can protect and possibly even help the liver "regenerate", especially if the problem is "fatty liver." Anyone know or have experience with Milk Thistle? Thanks.
Avatar m tn my hepatologist has me taking 1000mg milk thistle three times daily. If you are under dr. care you should check with them first before taking anything, I would think. Are you already treating? Or waiting?
768754 tn?1373918737 i took milk thistle for a year and it did nothing for me...i have to wonder how much of "feeling better "in your head..which still may be worth it..like faith healing..i think diet (lots of veggies) and exercise might work better..good luck though...
Avatar m tn Adverse Effects and Interactions The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality reviewed the effects of milk thistle on liver disease and cirrhosis,32 noting that serious adverse reactions are virtually unheard of. The most common reported complaints were gastrointestinal disturbances, but the overall incidence was no different from placebo. Allergic reactions, ranging from pruritus and rash to eczema and anaphylaxis, are rare. Drug interactions do not appear to be problematic.

Avatar f tn 5 years with vitamins. Liv.52 came highly recommended, but contains no Milk thistle. I would like to start taking Milk thistle, I have read about the recooperative abilities of SAMe and NAC regarding the liver. What may be the best combination of any or all of these four supplements to help and protect my liver now that I am sober. Thank you, babnair.

Avatar f tn Yes, Milk Thistle is available specifically formulated for dogs. Human varieties should not be given, as they contain alcohol and sometimes other things that are unsuitable for canines. Here's a link for dog-friendly Milk Thistle (but there are lots, so you could just Google "Milk Thistle for Dogs"). http://search.petwellbeing.
