Metoprolol vs metoprolol tartrate

Common Questions and Answers about Metoprolol vs metoprolol tartrate

toprol

1027737 tn?1253103788 Hi, Can someone tell me what the difference between Metoprolol and Metoprolol Tartrate is? Thank You in advance!
Avatar n tn but you must make sure it is the generic for toprol xl because there is metoprolol succinate which is the generic for toprol xl and metoprolol tartrate which is the generic for lopressor. They both work in two different ways so they can not be interchanged at the same dose. I asked this question before toprol xl became a generic.
Avatar f tn Again, on my experience and reading, I believe many may get sufficient medication taking Atenolol once a day, in general this is not the case with Metoprolol Tartrate (normal release). There is a higher cost slow release version of Metoprolol. My interest in Atenolol was more than the half-life of the medication. As you may have read my experience so far confirms the Atenolol is longer lasting in my body... only one sample, others may get different results.
Avatar m tn Yes, Metoprolol Succinate is the timed release. It is also way more expensive than Metoprolol Tartrate. I switched long ago to the latter and saved a lot of money. A dose costs literally pennies. You have to remember to take it twice a day though. I take it at "5 and 5"; at rising, and at dinner, and it's easy to remember. Metoprolol has the same bradycardia effect as Atenolol, so that has to be watched.
Avatar n tn I have taken Metoprolol Tartrate for many years and I'm currently on 75mg per day. I have an occasional weekend beer or a glass of wine and experience no side effects. YOUR MILEAGE MAY VARY, but I wanted to give you my experience with Metoprolol.
Avatar n tn There are two type of Metoprolol, Tartrate and Succinate. With Metoprolol Tartrate, you take it twice a day, usually 12 hours apart. Maximum plasma levels occur about an hour after taking in and it begins to be metabolized. Typically, the dose is reduced 50% every 4 to 5 hours. This is why it's taken twice a day. Metoprolol Succinate is the time release version. It's taken once a day and is slowly metabolized throughout a 24 hr. period.
1933354 tn?1323362834 Keep in mind that when you switched from Toprolol ER (Metoprolol Succinate) to Lopressor (Metoprolol Tartrate), you lost the timed released advantage. If you were taking 25mg. pills of each medication, you are loosing a great deal of the latter drug's effectiveness as the day wears on. The half life of Metoprolol Tartrate is only 3-7 hours. So you must take it at least twice a day for it to be effective the entire 24 hour period. Also 25mg., once a day is a a very small dose.
12182312 tn?1427683956 SSRIs like paroxetine are a type of antidepressant that works by increasing the amount of serotonin in the brain, while metoprolol is a beta blocker which works on the heart. What type of metoprolol are you taking. Metoprolol Tartrate or Metoprolol Succinate?
Avatar n tn I change last week from Metroprol to Metoprolol Tartrate because te Tartrate is $4.00. so maybe that new med is what is causing the issue.
Avatar n tn We went to see the doctor, the doctor asked my dad to stop taking METOPROLOL TARTRATE (BETALOC) which he has been taking for a long time. The doctor just said if my dad feels chest pain again, send him to the emergency room. What do you think the issue is? is it normal to become like this after the angioplasty? Why did the doctor ask my dad to stop taking the Metoprolol Tartrate?
Avatar n tn The SCARY thing is that in Europe they do not have Metoprolol Succinate Extended Release (TOPROL-XL). They only have Metoprolol tartrate, which for me is as bad as having none or even worse. I just moved to Europe and mnow realized this and what am I going to do? I can order Toprol XL from Canada and Turkey and even from Mauritius etc. yet European doctors do not prescribe it. What am I going to DO??
9870921 tn?1481258967 I am on 100 mg of metoprolol tartrate twice a day, and yesterday I have stepped it down to 75 mg twice a day..talk about dizzy...whooo.. anyway I am going to have a ablation on wednesday for SVT. I was told to hold my meds the night before and morning of the procedure, I wasn't sure how safe that was, called the pharmacist and he said that was perfectly safe..the doctor also said after the ablation I may not need them at all, so yes I am confused.
Avatar m tn Metoprolol comes in two formulations, Metoprolol Tartrate and Metoprolol Succinate. If you were prescribed the Tartrate variety, 50mg, once a day as you stated, then you were on a beta blocker roller coaster with a steep peak followed by a deep valley. Metoprolol has a rather short half life of approximately 6 hours, so in 24 hours, 50mg is nearly completely metabolized. This type should be taken twice a day.
1464004 tn?1384135733 may hit you harder than someone, with more body mass. Also remember that Metoprolol tartrate has a half life of about 6 hours, meaning every 6 hours or so, your body metabolizes the dose to 50% of the original amount. So 25 halves to 12, then halves to 6, then to 3mg after 18 hours. You mention ablation in your profile. It could be a good way to get rid of it forever. A lot of folks here along with myself have hadn't done. Penn has sooe great docs.
Avatar m tn Hello I am 61 yrs old and I been using metoprolol tartrate 25 mgs twice daily and I been noticed I feel funny when I been working on gardening greenhouse and feel weak and I check my blood pressure its normal but heart rate low avg like 50 sometime later on normal mostly low heart beating what cause it ?? Should have to be cut down once daily instead twice daily just wondering my appt Dr next week pls reply thank you ...
Avatar m tn I am on Metoprolol Tartrate 25MG 2 twice a day. Within 30 mins of taking Metoprolol, I feel the effects and I feel great. My BP and it drops to 100/60 and my heart rate drops to 70 or even 65 BPM. I don't have any side effects from this med. That being said, the issue I'm running into is that the Metoprolol doesn't seem to last as long as it should. If I take the Metaprolol at 7am, by the time 3pm comes around, my BP is 135/92 and my heart rate can get as high as 120 BPM.
Avatar f tn Hello everyone. I had sexual side effects from taking Metoprolol Tartrate. Are there any BP meds that I can take that do not cause these effects? I have heard of some that I could speak to my doctor about. But I wanted to ask here to see what advice I get from this forum. Thanks so much.
612551 tn?1450022175 Yes, I was taking Metoprolol Tartrate, at my request. The SR version was in the range of $60US for 90, while the Tartrate (in my case using 1/2 does twice a day) is $15 for 180 pills, thus each serves approximately 3 months. This is not a budget breaker, but I always go for the lower cost if I can't see any real benefit. For me taking twice a day verses once a day is no difference. If I read correctly the Atenolol holds up fairly well for 20 hours.
Avatar f tn I take 25mg of Metoprolol Tartrate and my side effect is very itchiness in the male area. Any suggestions on how to stop the itch?
Avatar m tn I've been taking metoprolol Tartrate (Lopressor) for a couple of months now for what the doctors are calling benign PVC's. I was having the constantly for almost 2 months before we started the medication and it seems to be helping, I haven't had any PVC's for awhile now. My question is, can you drink alcohol while taking it? I'm by no means a heavy drinker, but it's nice to have a drink with friends once in awhile.
Avatar m tn Propranolol has a reportedly better shortening effect on Long Q than Metoprolol. Are you taking Metoprolol Tartrate? Metoprolol has a very short half life; typically 5 hours or so. In that time, half of it is metabolized. Physicians usually prescribe Metoprolol to be taken twice a day beca use of his. MetoprololSuccinate is the time release version, and that is taken once a day. In addition 25mg. is an exceedingly small dose.
Avatar f tn If you look at the plasma half life of Metoprolol, at the end of the day, there is very little remaining in you blood. Are you taking it more than once a day? With Metoprolol Tartrate (the standard release kind) taking it only once a day creates these peaks and valleys as opposed to a more level dose.
Avatar f tn 2) Are there any alternatives to regular blood pressure medication for treating SVT? I was taking metoprolol tartrate 25 mg twice daily, but this caused me to experience chest pressure. My cardiologist took me off of it and put me on a low dose of cardizem. I haven't experienced any ill effects so far from cardizem, but I would much rather find a natural treatment for SVT like acupuncture or natural medicines. I know that bearing down can help stop an episode of it...
Avatar m tn I was prescribed Metoprolol Tartrate (50mg/2XD) last Monday due to HBP. When I went back to my doctor for a follow up on Friday, he also decided to put me on Xanax (PRN) and Celexa (10mg/1XD). I always research any medication I take, and have been reading that the Metoprolol Tartrate and the Citaprolam are a bad combination and can lead to extremely low blood pressure or even heart stoppage.
Avatar f tn Oh, also I'm on the tartrate 2x a day. Are you on time release or tartrate? And how many per day?
Avatar n tn Is it true that SSRIs and beta blockers are not a wise combination? Is there an SSRI that works well with metoprolol tartrate? I do not have a history of high blood pressure, but I do have a history of anxiety. I used Paxil in the past but stopped due to the numb feeling. I think I also had weight gain on the Paxil.
1464004 tn?1384135733 I take Metoprolol Tartrate 25 mg BID. When it nears time to take my second dose, maybe an hour before,I feel like what I can only describe as a pressure or ache in my heart as if it's telling me it's time for my next dose.I know that sounds kind of weird and was just wondering if anyone else has had that happen. The pressure feeling always goes away about a half hour after I take my night dose andrarely if ever happens with the morning dose. I know weird right?
Avatar n tn Metoprolol is available in two forms, fast acting Metoprolol Tartrate (Lopressor), and the time release Metoprolol Succinate (Toprol XL). I used both, and found that side effects are similar; tiredness, weight gain, and a slow pulse. Side effects are more pronounced as the dosage is increased. I had dosages from 25mg to 200mg. daily. Other reported effects are loss of libido, tightness in the chest, itching, irregular breathing, and irregular heartbeat.
