Metoprolol hives

Common Questions and Answers about Metoprolol hives

toprol

Have taken methimazole for 2 yrs, six weeks ago I was put on metoprolol and now have hives. Taking plavix and just scratching gives me bruises. Which med is most likely the culprit to hives.
I've been taking 25 mg of metoprolo a day (1/2 pill twice daily) just for some minor issues with PVCs. After several months I got hives and some food sensitivity that is evidently a side effect, so I decided to stop. My cardiologist seemed to think this is a low enough dose that I could just stop cold if I wanted to, but I thought I'd see what folks thought, if I should taper off.
Is anyone taking metoprolol? It's driving me nuts! I do have anxiety disorder. And of course knowing they gave me this to lower my heart rate makes me nervous. And with my anxiety disorder I am taking my blood pressure every hour. I know that doesn't help. But dealing wit the metoprolol, it has dropped me to 88/55 at times, today 112/73, then 93/55 then 142/70. I get hot flashes, shakes, tingling arms, a general feeling of panic when I see my reading is low or I feel the shakes....
So for over a year now I've had a rash that no doctor can figure out what it is .. It comes and goes every day and looks like hives. Im pretty screwed on testing for allergies because all the allergists ive talked to say you have to go 2 weeks without having a break out because it could send my body into shock.. well since i get this evey day thats impossible...Very itchy as well.
After about 4 weeks on the med, I developed generalized hives which required an antihistamine and prednisone to resolve. Currently I am not on any treatment for my Graves (it has been about two weeks) and my heart rate is beginning to increase (90's) and my anxiety is coming back. I was told propranolol is not an option for me because when I occasionally get bronchitis, I have mild reactive airway disease with it.
Cardiologist switched sotolol to metoprolol and now I seem to be having a reaction from meds, hives. Cardiologist wants me to switch metoprolol for diltiazem but I read that suddenly stopping metoprolol could cause a thyroid storm. I've already been through this and do not want to do it again. Is diltiazem safe? I did not even know until recently that metoprolol was also a med for thyroid.
I'm trying to find out if it is safe for me to take Metoprolol 50mg (generic Lopressor 50mg tab) when just have allergic reaction (hives and severe itching) after taking Amlodipine Bestlate 5 mg generic Norvasc 5mg XC

I have a fast pulse, over 100, and heart palpitations (strange because hypo usually causes SLOW pulse). I was prescribed Metoprolol. It brought my pulse down into the 80's. Here's where it gets really strange: I had some red patches on my shoulders and was prescribed Clotrimazole-Betamethasone cream for it.
I was healthy then about 3 years ago I had a Parotid tumor removed then 8 months later I had 1/2 of my thyroid removed due to a fast growing tumor. 10 days after my Thyroid surgery I had severe hives and angioedema landing me in the hospital for another 8 days and my records say I had kidney failure from this reaction. The hives continued for 14 months with other hospital stays.
I did not want to take the metoprolol and I declined the prescription for the metoprolol that the ER doc had wanted to give me--I should have at least taken the prescription because it was over a weekend and I could barely wait to call my md on Monday morning to get some metoprolol to control the shakes (full body) that came out of the blue and the rapid heart rate.
For itching that seems to be hives or that itches like hives (no definite rash but with some swelling, redness, and itching), try drinking only distilled water for a few weeks. Someone I met on a trip was talking about his hives stopping after he stopped drinking tap water. I had been experiencing hives, and I never knew when I would wake up with some part of my body affected.
I wondered if the pre-menopause was caused by the thyroid going hyper, because in my case my period stopped in February and in March my heart started beating fast. Then they gave me metoprolol, a beta blocker, to slow down the heart, but we can't do anything for the thyroid medication wise because I tried tapazole and broke out in hives. They are planning surgery to remove 1/2 the thyroid that has a nodule on it that is making it hyper. Until then, they said just wait it out.
Felt great for that whole year, never had high blood pressure throughout this whole episode but 3-months after stopping the coreg my breathing became bad again, this happened after a chest infection and a horrible bout of hives (urticaria) that lasted three months. (digitek was recalled during this time too. Went back to a new cardiologist in April (moved to new State in this last year), did an echo May 5th that showed EF of <25.
it's not always 'visible' unless I stop the benedryl! I get some hives on my face, my upper arm starts to itch and then it progresses. Someone mentioned it could take a while to get the BP meds out of my 'blood' and system. I've always been such a busy and athletic person but, this is keeping me down. Also, thanks for the breathing exercises - I will give it a go! I know I don't breathe like I should...I tend to hold my breath a lot... not sure why...I am aware of it...
Living with this thing for 1 months now, on metoprolol to lower my heart rate which had gone up. That's working marginally, my heart rate is down in the 90s now. But since I'm new to this, how long does it actually take before they'll DO something? I thought once they'd found the nodule and tested everything and they know it's hyperactive TSH <0.05 they would just book me for radiation or surgery. Instead I'm sitting here waiting for what I don't know.
I now have a consistent rash that looks like what I would think hives or poison ivy looks like. Very bumpy, uncontrollable itching, looks like a burn as if it is in my scar tissue. It appeared on my leg and lower back. For a few days it was all over my body and looked like small pox. Now it is staying primarily on my leg and lower back. Unfortunately I do not have insurance at this time.

Call your doc, you do not have to wait, the med came with side effects and when you should call or stop med, i believe hives was one of them. My hives lasted for about 3-4 days after i was taken off of methimazole. did a lot of aveeno baths and tried to stay as cool as possible. heat seems to exacerbate the hives. don't suffer, put in a call to doc (I was on a higher does than that tsh was 0.00 and ft4 was over 15.

5-40) And I had a SPEP done due to elevated globulin and it came back showing elevated gamma globulins (polyclonal gammopathy).
I also have had hives on back and neck for a week or two and it itches terribly. I looked it up in a book and saw where hives can happen with hyperthyroidism. My event monitor is giving lots of information but I want to know what is causing this. Like many others I am tired of hearing "Don't worry", My earlier post is on this thread so if amy of you would want to know about all these symptoms that go with Graves I am the expert.
I recently started on Metoprolol for the PVC's and past episode of atrial fib. Just 2 weeks into taking the medicine and don't feel different yet. I may be going back to Cleveland where I lived all my life for a second opinion at the Cleveland Clinic. See link below -- they have an outstanding department specializing in this. http://www.clevelandclinic.org/heartcenter/pub/about/specialties/electrophysiology.
started metoprolol ER 12.5mg increased gradually to 75mg daily (dose increase only good for 1-2 days then symptoms intensifying) After thyroid scan started PTU 50mg q8h felt great for 2 days then shakiness and s/s returned (had also been decreasing the metoprolol by 12.5 mg per day per md order) 9/26 per md increased PTU to 100 mg q8h with dose started at 1330h and felt good by 1600h with no shakes and hr in 90's When is this going to get better?.....
Also am wondering if any of you have a tendency to break out into hives frequently? I never had a problem with this growing up but in the last two years it seems I constantly break out into hives (I'm pale so this is pretty hard to hide and very embarassing!) on my chest and sometimes on my face (spreading from my ears across my cheeks). Other times when I am stressed I will get this very dark red band across my nose (looks like someone punched me...yeah good times).

HI Goolarra, I'm on metoprolol and it can make me feel slow, clumsy, my reaction times are seriously impacted - makes me a little nervous about driving. I hope in time I can adapt to it like you have. Labs won't be for another three weeks when I see the endo for the first time but I may call the doc before then if this keeps up.
Hi, This does seem to be an allergic reaction which is manifesting as rash/hives. Hives are raised, often itchy, red welts on the surface of the skin. When you have an allergic reaction to a substance, histamine and other chemicals are released into your bloodstream, causing itching, swelling, and other symptoms. The common triggers are medications, foods (shellfish, fish, nuts, eggs, milk, and other foods), pollen and insect bites.
