Avatar m tn I am 38 year old.I was diagnosed of high BP(170/105mm/hg). I was prescrbed metoprolol 50mg and amlodipine 5mg. I have been taking this medine for a year. I have been regularly checking my BP ever since. It comes to 130/75mm/hg within a month. But Still I am taking the same dosage. My worry is : Is metoprolol and amlodipine safe to take?Since I am 38 only what would be its long term effects. That is taking the drug for over 30 years? Finally whether the dosage may be changed? Please help.
Avatar m tn I was given Toprol XL 25 mg to take but I am afraid to take it. I know its my anxiety talking but is it safe to take when it is for anxiety and to steady my heart rate? Also how does it make you feel?
Avatar m tn I've taken metoprolol for six days for high blood pressure, it made me feel lousy, groggy and gave me headaches. I want to stop it cold turkey, my doctor says its ok with such a small dose but I am a huge worrier and would like to know if anyone had any side effects when stopping even after taking it for such a short period of time??
Avatar m tn I currently take Amiodarone 200mg a day, Metoprolol 100mg a day, Prilosec OTC 40mg a day. I have occasional Atrial Fibrillation. I was put on the Metoprolol in 2004 (my dosage is much lower now) and the Amiodarone in July 2008. I suffer greatly from panic attacks and extreme anxiety. My doctor prescribed Zoloft for me at 25mg a day for two weeks, then 50mg a day thereafter. He knows all the meds I currently take, of course.
Avatar m tn Metoprolol comes in two formulations, Metoprolol Tartrate and Metoprolol Succinate. If you were prescribed the Tartrate variety, 50mg, once a day as you stated, then you were on a beta blocker roller coaster with a steep peak followed by a deep valley. Metoprolol has a rather short half life of approximately 6 hours, so in 24 hours, 50mg is nearly completely metabolized. This type should be taken twice a day.
116881 tn?1189755823 Main point, it is prescribed by a medical doctor, I would then assume it is reasonable. I think the dose level you are taking, 25mg or less, is so low that there is not "shock" to you body by stopping, or starting suddenly. If you were on 50mg or more per day for a period of time (how long, I don't know but suggest more than a month) it may be necessary to cut back by half until you are at 25 mg for a few days before stopping completely.
Avatar f tn Hello all, I have recently been having what i believe to be "heart palpitations." I am a 22 year old female and have been on Metoprolol since i was 16 (for hypertension) the dosage was upped a year ago from 25 mg to 50 mg. The palps have become more frequent as of late and i have severe anxiety as well. Whenever i have a palp i tend to get really anxious about it and panic. it seems to be a vicious circle. is there a way that the medication has caused this problem?
Avatar n tn Metoprolol is available in two forms, fast acting Metoprolol Tartrate (Lopressor), and the time release Metoprolol Succinate (Toprol XL). I used both, and found that side effects are similar; tiredness, weight gain, and a slow pulse. Side effects are more pronounced as the dosage is increased. I had dosages from 25mg to 200mg. daily. Other reported effects are loss of libido, tightness in the chest, itching, irregular breathing, and irregular heartbeat.
Avatar f tn m a 44 year old male with a history of sinus tachycardia, PVCs and PACs, and terrible anxiety and panic disorder. In December of 2016 I was started on a lose dose of metoprolol and in May of 2017 the dose was upped to 25mgs in the morning and 25mgs at night. I have been a little lightheaded and tired since the dosage was increased and I understand that this can be normal. Within the last 2 weeks I have become VERY lightheaded 2-4 hours after taking my morning dose of metoprolol.
10610562 tn?1411418414 Is there a way to lower the dosage of propranolol? maybe try to titre it down to where it still helps with the symptoms but has the least affect on the asthma? sorry out of my realm of knowledge. hopefully someone else has some tips.
Avatar n tn My father is a Nurse Practitioner and says that my blood pressure was never at a level to merit Metoprolol in any dosage. He said I should have been given anti anxiety medicine for a short period of time until my situational stress was reduced. So now, what do I do? I want off the medication but now my doctors wants to send me to a kidney specialist and possibly put me on more drugs.Do you have any advise for me?
Avatar m tn The metoprolol just has seemed to make my anxiety worse which I have read one of the side effects of metoprolol is increased anxiety. I lowered my dosage because of the side effects I was feeling and it was taking my resting heart rate is the low 50's and made my breathing feel very low and shallow.
Avatar f tn So then he suggested that I should take anxiety medication to control my heart palpitations and I told him rather take a beta blocker to control my palpitations, I told him that I use to take Metoprolol and I would much rather continue that medication ONLY instead of anxiety/depression oriented meds.
Avatar n tn I got the generic form but the cost is very high. Can he switch to metoprolol and take 50mg in the am and 50mg in the pm?
589617 tn?1218719782 I've been on Metoprolol for about the last month for SVT and atrial flutter. I started at 50 mg/day and dropped to 25 mg/day after the first 2 days. I had some nausea, sleepiness, etc and passed out on the second day - thats why my dosage was reduced. Prior to taking metoprolol I had SVT episodes about every 2-3 months and I've had one since I started on the metoprolol. So I can't say that its working in my case. I'm scheduled for a second opinion for an EP in a few weeks.
Avatar n tn I can certainly feel for you, I have been on metoprolol for almost 4 yrs now, I was recently hospitalized twice in the last month, and in turn they raised my dosage to 100mg twice a day. I did very well on the metoprolol for yrs, try to give it more time, your symptoms should feel better soon. As for the other med, I'm not formiliar w/it. I have Bigeminy and PVC's, both of which are very annoying.
Avatar f tn I take Metoprolol ER which is in the same class beta blocker, 25MG 2x day. Beta Blockers slow your heart rate, but I don't feel a difference with mine. The only thing is when exercising, it's harder to get your target heart rate up, but I don't think with your dosage it should make a difference.....
Avatar f tn Im already on 100 mg 1 time a day of extended release Metoprolol.....and I think, just to appease me, because ive had a couple really really bad days of almost nonstop palps..he said to increase my Metoprolol to 1 100mg tablet in the morning...and 1 100mg tablet at night. Anyone EVER been on such a huge dose before??? I trust him...but yet....Im scared to take that much!!! ANY info on SVC OR Metoprolol would be appreciated!
Avatar n tn I think the cells can create more adrenaline receptors with time - a possible reason why it's a bad idea to suddenly stop using beta blockers. With high / complete beta blockade (>200 mgs of metoprolol) this is probably not an issue, but it can possibly happen with lower amounts. Another possibility is that your anxiety level is somewhat higher now, for unknown reasons. It's probably a good idea to ask your doctor.
1425157 tn?1311651679 I forgot to mention. One of the classis side effects of Metoprolol is bradycardia. My dosage slowed resting pulse down into the low 60's. I find that it takes a little more time to warm up during physical activity, but once your heart is up to speed, it's fine.
Avatar m tn Yes, Metoprolol Succinate is the timed release. It is also way more expensive than Metoprolol Tartrate. I switched long ago to the latter and saved a lot of money. A dose costs literally pennies. You have to remember to take it twice a day though. I take it at "5 and 5"; at rising, and at dinner, and it's easy to remember. Metoprolol has the same bradycardia effect as Atenolol, so that has to be watched.
Avatar f tn I recently had an exacerbation of svt requiring adenosine and an increase in my maintenance metoprolol dosage. I essentially lost a day of memory and have been forgetful and foggy headed. Just wondering if this is normal. I can't get any doctor I have seen to address this.
