Metoprolol and liver function

Common Questions and Answers about Metoprolol and liver function

toprol

Research on the web says that Atenolol is much longer lasting than Metoprolol and suggests that Metoprolol Tartrate has to be taken twice a day... Atenolol only once ! Strangle, again, my Cardiologist who issued a prescription for Atenolol upon my request to be allowed to try it is for 25 mg twice a day.
In light of the fact that I am currently UND and have no virus, the reversal of fatty liver and less necrosis and less HCC all sounds very appealing, not to mention any reduction in IR would mean ones own Interferon response would be better post tx. and this alone may increase ones chances of an SVR even if begun at the end of an SOC regime. Perhaps now, more than any other time it could help insure one will recognize any lingering HCV and seek and destroy as designed.
I agree with Erin's assessment below - your liver function tests are very minimally elevated and I would just continue monitoring it as she has suggested in her answer. If it continues to rise, I would consider tests for hepatitis and an ultrasound to evaluate for any liver masses or fatty liver which can cause an elevation of liver enzymes. Although Aciphex is a safe medication, in rare, rare circumstances, it can cause inflammation of the liver.
METOPROLOL, PLAVIX, COZAAR, ISOSOR MONO-SULFATE,VYTORIN, AND OF LATE, RANEXA. THIS LAST ONE, RANEXA, WORKS VERY WELL WITH ME IN STOPPING THE ANGINA I WAS GETTING WHICH WAS BECOMING ALMOST CHRONIC. IT ALLOWS ME TO EXERCISE AND FUNCTION ALMOST AS WELL AS BEFORE. HOWEVER, I REALLY LIKE TO EAT A !/2 GRAPERUIT IN THE MORNING AND THE MANUFACTURES SAYS YOU SHOULD NOT TAKE GRAPEFRUIT PRODUCTS WITH RANEXA. i WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHY. IS IT DANGEROUS IN THAT LIVER, KIDNEY OR OTHER ORGAN WOULD BE DAMAGED.
It appears when the system is overloaded, the grapefruit juice can “swamp” the system, keeping the liver busy and blocking it from breaking down drugs and other substances. Doctors have since found that more than 40 different meds can have their effects magnified by grapefruit juice. Cranberry juice can increase the effects of a blood thinner called warfarin.
I am able to get up and go to work (as a teacher) and function at a normal level on a daily basis. My doctor's name is Blair Grubb and he is connected to Toledo University's College of Medicine. He is an expert in the autonomic dysfunction field and is simply a genius (He has patients coming to him from other countries-- that's how good he is). Dr. Grubb ,and his cohorts, did a controlled study on pregnant women who have NCS.
Look out for infection because methimazole sometimes has an effect on white blood cells. Another rare side effect is liver problems. Your doctor should test for liver function at one of your early blood tests. I pretty much took methimazole at consistently lower doses until I averaged 7.5 mg daily at the time I had surgery. Good luck to you. I hope you feel better soon.
Many people who reach remission do relapse. Metoprolol can be stopped once your levels stabilize and you are not having cardiac issues. You should have a baseline Liver function test before beginning any ATD's. You will also have periodic liver testing throughout the time you are on ATD's. Liver issues are not common. You can take an antihistime to help with itchyness. The itch should go away and may be a temporary reaction.
As soon as I get into a place I get so dizzy and my vision is all messed up. I get so hot and sweaty and my heart races. I want my life back. I still dont believe that its just anxiety causing all of this. I feel like I have something else wrong that the doctors cant find even though i have had bloodwork, mri, ekg, and they were all normal. I started taking .25mg of xanax once a day. still dont feel any better yet. So if anybody has any help please give it to me.
I switched to taking it in the AM along with my Triamterene/HCTZ, and Metoprolol instead of mid-day.....in which it was dropping my HR into the low 60's. I'm just so wiped out feeling anymore. I hope my body adjust soon...... And realllllly hope they can also figure out why I'm in so much pain all the time. Mainly with my back; but, my stomach and all over body pains too. I feel like a real mess anymore. Sigh In case anyone has been reading my post.

At first my cardiologist put me on Metoprolol and that made me cloudy minded and super tired. Then he put me on Atenolol and that did not stop it. I went to an EP and he said that he wouldn't recommend ablation for someone my age from the spot he sees the PVC's coming from. So now he has me on acebutolol 200mg twice a day. I've been on it for two days now and haven't notice any clearing of the PVC's does anyone now if this medicine takes time to get into your system?
I told him I would rather wait but the pills do not help the pain at all. I am on Diovan for heart and Metoprolol also Levothyroxin for Thyroid. I can not believe there is so many of us with it and can not find out what it is. Please keep us posted if any results.
5-40) And I had a SPEP done due to elevated globulin and it came back showing elevated gamma globulins (polyclonal gammopathy). I have a fast pulse, over 100, and heart palpitations (strange because hypo usually causes SLOW pulse). I was prescribed Metoprolol. It brought my pulse down into the 80's. Here's where it gets really strange: I had some red patches on my shoulders and was prescribed Clotrimazole-Betamethasone cream for it.
In any event, my headaches are back with a vengeance because I stopped Propranolol and started on Metoprolol. Thank you both for your input and help. I really appreciate it since most of my doctors aren't that interested in my case and my family and friends don't understand what I'm going through...they're even getting sick of me being sick for so long!
I am in constant pain, worse than I was before, I am completely exaughsted and can barely function. I am in my early 30's and my quality of life is now that of someone well into their 70's or 80's! I am open to any suggestions that anyone might have... I mentioned POTS to the rhuematologist, but he didn't seem to think that it was a concern. Please let me know if you have any ideas!!!
It was 5, which still sounds high for someone like me who was avoiding potassium and has normal kidney function. the wbc was up to 3.9 but here's the weird part, my liver function, ALT(SGPT) was up -- 77. I don't drink, do drugs or have any other risk factors for liver problems. How does this relate to the heart? well , here are my questions: 1. I have a history of super sensitivity to many drugs. could 25 mg. of metoprolol 2x a day cause liver problems? 2. could it cause leukopenia? 3.
The sensation is as if my head and neck are throbbing with pressure and I have to stop walking or slow down and stop and stand still for a minute or so to make the sensation stop. Sounds are muffled in rhythm with the pulsations and I sometimes feel as if I will pass out, but never have. There is no pain. I have been checked throughly by my GP, a cardiologist, and an electrophysiologist and none of them could find a cause.
Saw new dr. hospital endo clinic, dx Thyrotoxicosis. dr. said what turned hyper symptoms on can be shut off w/ATD’s, told me thyroid small, neck swollen slighty nothing 2 go batty over. Was on Metoprolol 4, 2 mos 25MG 2X day 2 tide me over for today’s appt. Started MMI 10 MG 1X day in beginning 6/07 with another endo previous 2day’s appt. Stopped MMI after 2 weeks due 2 itching, minor hair loss, was scared, wasn’t able 2 stop beta blocker same way.
I think everything is over and I clean up. I walk out of the toilet and in about 2 minutes time the stomach cramp and the fainting sensation comes back (I've fainted only once to date from this and was out for about 15-20 minutes). 6. When I get back to the toilet I have a really violent Diarrhoea episode in pure liquid state.
04. So I guess I am doing ok...liver and kidney function were fine. At first I thought the kidneys might have something to do with the bp #'s but nope. * am such an anxious person..I really appreciate your response. Means a lot.
I've been on Metoprolol 50 mg one in the AM and one in the PM and it makes me dizzy and makes me feel like my heart is squeezing and doesn't do grunt to really control my PVC's. I have a close friend who is a psychologist, my age, who has the same thing. He was on Metoprolol and complained to his doctor who forced the pharmacy to give him the real medication, Toprol. Toprol is the brand name. Metoprolol is the generic.
And since I have always been very slim with no stomach, I wonder if I could also have fluid there. At that time I was also on 50mg Metoprolol, but my cardiologist discontinued this and increased the Lasix to 80 mg daily. My HR especially in the mornings, goes up to 100-120 just standing or walking to the kitchen and I get tired very easily. I try not to do too much in the morning, because my heart races and then I am tired for the rest of the day.
Thanks you so much for posting your comment about the drug interactions between metoprolol and grapefruit! My fiance wanted to eat a grapefruit and I remembered a reaction between the two...thank goodness for your help!!
Selective beta-blockers, such as atenolol and metoprolol, are less effective and are not currently recommended for primary prophylaxis. Likewise, use of isosorbide mononitrate (alone or with nonselective beta blockers) is not currently recommended. Propranolol is usually started at a dose of 20 mg twice daily and nadolol at a dose of 40 mg daily. The goal of therapy is to reduce the WHVP by at least 20% or to a gradient of less than 12 mm Hg.
It should only be a short term drug for that reason and liver function blood tests should be done on a regular basis. The new drug Multaq or dronedarone was developed to have all the benefits of the amiodarone but without the toxic damage to your body. I would highly recommend you discussing this with your cardiologist or EP guy. Amiodarone is most commonly used short term before of after an ablation to help remold the heart and its rhythms.
• Encephalopathy, confusion and forgetfulness caused by poor liver function and the diversion of blood flow away from your liver. • Reduced levels of platelets or decreased white blood cell count. How is portal hypertension diagnosed? Endoscopic examination, X-ray studies, and lab tests can confirm that you have variceal bleeding. Further treatment is necessary to reduce the risk of recurrent bleeding. What are the treatment options for portal hypertension?
Amazingly, I never even had low bp probs with all that, my body would just adjust. Once I was on it AND metoprolol AND lisinopril, bp started to be more problematic but the rhythms were bad. Then they added diltiazem and kept increasing the dose every two weeks. Then, flecainide was added.. and my rate slowed down... ALL the way down. I had to be taken into the ER with a rate of 0. So, they gave me a pacemaker so they actually could give me all those meds and not just kill me.
Possible benefit has been shown most frequently, but not consistently, for improvement in aminotransferases and liver function tests are overwhelmingly the most common outcome measure studied." http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8225695?dopt=Abstract "These results show that IdB1016 may improve LFTs related to hepatocellular necrosis and/or increases membrane permeability in patients affected by CAH." http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/bv.fcgi?rid=hstat1.chapter.
Although I never liked beets I learned to eat them by making them with grated fresh ginger and olive oil. It makes sense that to help a scarred liver, to avoid processed food and eat as organically as possible. A doctor told me egg whites and tofu were good for albumin levels. What I do know is if the cirrhosis is decompensated you should avoid salt and red meat.
