Methylphenidate vs dextroamphetamine

Common Questions and Answers about Methylphenidate vs dextroamphetamine

ritalin

Avatar f tn your son has apparently experienced positive results with Concerta which is a form of methylphenidate, while Adderall is a form of dextroamphetamine (Ritalin and Dexedrine). Frequently the forms of methylphenidate work better for ADHD Hyperactive while the dextroamphetamines work better for the Inattentive. Which is your son? To compound matters further if he is an "active" young man, is his activity "motor" or "distractablitIy" driven?
Avatar m tn * Stimulant medications, such as dextroamphetamine-based drugs (Adderall, Vyvanese) and methylphenidate-based drugs (Concerta, Daytrana, Ritalin). They are also available as generics. * Nonstimulant medication, such as the antidepressant bupropion (Wellbutrin and generic) or atomoxetine (Strattera), which is not available as a generic.
Avatar f tn Ritalin (methylphenidate), Concerta (a long lasting capsule form of methylphenidate), Dexedrine (dextroamphetamine), Adderall (a mixture of amphetamines) and Cylert (pemoline) are sometimes called "stimulants". When prescribed for people who have ADHD, they stimulate the frontal parts of the brain which are not inhibiting ("filtering out") distractions as well as they should. The medications work similarly to caffeine. They are not tranquilizers or sedatives.
Avatar n tn Phenylpropanolamine Acutrim® Decongestant / allergies, sinusitis, asthma Amphetamine Adderall® CNS stimulant / ADHD This includes dextroamphetamine and amphetamine / dextroamphetamine combinations.
Avatar n tn methylphenidate and dextroamphetamine. If the medicines he has used are from one of those two 'families' of drugs, it would be worthwhile to choose an option from the other of the two families. If he is not able to use either of the two families of stimulant medications because of the side effects, a trial on Strattera would be prudent.
Avatar f tn The class of drugs called psychostimulants (active ingredient either methylphenidate or dextroamphetamine) remains the front line treatment of ADHD. We now have the benefit (since people who are now adults have used these medications as children) of seeing the impact of such drugs over many years. The evidence is overwhelming that the treatments are safe. Now, does this mean that there are no possible side effects? No.
Avatar n tn It is usually wise to proceed with one of the stimulant medications (if Ritalin or another of the methylphenidate products is not useful, perhaps one of the dextroamphetamine prodicts, like Adderall, will be a better choice).
Avatar m tn Could someone explain to me the difference in Ritalin (methylphenidate) vs. Methamphetamines? I thought they were the same pretty much.
1367899 tn?1278121440 My sister and I started a blog on Adderall to learn more about the medication along with alternative and complementary ADHD treatment options. Any feedback from users of Adderall or Adderall XR would be greatly appreciated. Topics to be added this week on http://Adderall.org How is Adderall XR different from Adderall? [Adderall vs. Adderall XR] What is Adderall? How to Make Adderall: [Adderall Background Information] What are the best Adderall and ADHD books?
Avatar n tn Concerta is a special formulation of methylphenidate that lasts longer. Generic methylphenidate is much cheaper, but is generally taken 2-3 times per day.
Avatar f tn I should have added that it is way outside the norm for a child of ten to be getting out of her seat in school. Her teacher has to set more firm limits on this behavior and, in no uncertain terms, tell her to stop it.
Avatar f tn My doctor recently put on methylphenidate for my resistant depression and today was the first day I took it, I felt super for the first 3 hours maybe, but then a little shaky and fatigue, is this normal on the first day? I also take lorazepam for my severe anxiety and i want to know if there's any adverse reaction, I mean my psychiatrist put me on this just want to know if my reaction is normal, other than that the first 3 hours I felt super fine the depression decrease tremendously.

Avatar n tn Pharmacological therapy mainly uses activating substances such as tricyclic antidepressants or methylphenidate (Dolce et al. 2002). Surgical methods (eg. deep brain stimulation) are used infrequently due to the invasiveness of the procedures. Stimulation techniques include sensory stimulation, sensory regulation, music and musicokinetic therapy, social-tactile interaction, etc.
Avatar f tn Certain drugs could be responsible like metoclopramide, prednisone, effexor, an antidepressant, paxil, an SSRI, wellbutrin, an antidepressant, Zoloft an SSRI and dextroamphetamine, a CNS stimulant. Consult a neurologist soon who will evaluate you for these symptoms and investigate these appropriately. Take care.
Avatar m tn However, I have also struggled with ADD my entire life and now, finally, at 44, I have sought treatment for that as well. I was prescribed methylphenidate ER-LA 20mg. I am trying to determine the best strategy for taking these pills. I have been taking the bupropion first, then the methylphenidate about an hour later. I feel GREAT at first--focused, clear, calm.
Avatar f tn Prescribed 20 mg methylphenidate three times daily. How do I determine if this is correct dosage? My PCP tested me 5 years ago but until I started going to counseling I hadn't taken it seriously, after seeing a counselor last year, she ASKED me if I'd ever been tested for ADHD and I was shocked but it became obvious when I started researching. It's very overwhelming at times but I'm past the denial stage and currently learning how to cope.
Avatar m tn i am taking methylphenidate two times a day one in the morning and one in the afternoon i'm fine in the morning because i go back to sleep when it is time to take my next dose after i do it makes me sick and have a headache and i am also taking 4mg of lexapro what should i do?
Avatar f tn Personally, I'm on Vyvanse at 60mg daily, plus a lunch and dinner dose of methylphenidate at 5mg each. Although I've tried so many different ADD medications and doses before ending up where I am, I agree that Vyvanse does take a while to kick in. Not everyone is the same, so if Adderall works better for you it's not very shocking.
Avatar f tn This should help you,God bless your son and your family. mportant information about Concerta Do not use Concerta if you have used an MAO inhibitor such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), tranylcypromine (Parnate), phenelzine (Nardil), rasagiline (Azilect), or selegiline (Eldepryl, Emsam) within the past 14 days. Serious, life-threatening side effects can occur if you use Concerta before the MAO inhibitor has cleared from your body.
572651 tn?1530999357 Methylphenidate and Methylphenidate SR are the generics and they are pretty cheap compared to Ritalin. Dextroamphetamine Mixed Salts are the generic version of Adderal. I have used both. I prefer the Dextroamphetamine Mixed Salts because the mixture of salts kicks in over time. A dose lasts me about 8 hours and it action is very predictable. Methylphenidate lasts about 4 hours. Methylphenidate SR lasts about 8, but the drug has "steep skirts" and wears off suddenly (on me.
5757880 tn?1395578022 * Plain Methylphenidate (20mg / Twice a Day) * Generic Adderall (20mg / Twice a Day) * Generic Ritilan SR (20mg / Twice a Day) * Generic Concerta (20mg / Twice a Day) ... seems all the big money is in the extended release medicine. With this list, I'm unsure what would really be best for my son. He is 8 years old, he takes Concerta 54mg once a day in the morning. They are still evaluating him for PDD and also they will be evaluating him for sensory issues.
