Avatar m tn All pregnant opiate-addicted women are advised to take methadone as a part of a medically supervised methadone maintenance treatment program. Methadone is currently the only medication approved for the addiction treatment of pregnant women who are addicted to heroin or other opiates. The fetus feels withdrawal symptoms during pregnancy.
Avatar f tn For the most part opiate withdrawals do not cause death. I'm posting a quote from Adi Jaffe PhD in "Psychology Today" magazine "Opiates - Many people are surprised to learn that in most cases, withdrawal from many opiates (link is external) is not deadly. Still there are some very important exceptions.
Avatar f tn Then see what my pain level is.Only problem is the withdrawal pain is driving me insane. From what I have read about methadone withdrawal its going to be quite some time before all withdrawal syptoms are gone.I deal with depression also and while on methadone there are alot of anti-depressant meds you can not mix with methadone.I have tried so many anti-depressants nothing works for me.I always feel very sadated once they have there full effect.I just feel terrible when I take anti-depressants.
Avatar f tn ve seen on television, babies do go through withdrawal after birth. Adults go through some sort of withdrawal after being prescribed those medications. Think about how fragile a baby would be. I would seek alternative medicine. Not sure what your health problem is but Acupuncture might help.

Avatar m tn Yep right here!!...I swear, & not many people believe me, but my methadone withdrawal was almost like nothing!!...I was on it for 8yrs highest dose about 100mg, & from January to March 24, 2012 I tapered completely off...by myself..no Dr...I was 3months clean & started to have bladder/kidney pain, had some surgeries, got on oxycodone for that & am currently trying to taper off it...let me tell you, it has been beyond WORSE than the methadone!!!...
Avatar f tn ve got methadone to begin with but my withdrawal from roxys was a hard one and I got very scared when I started cramping, fearing I was causing my body to miscarry. I just want to do the right thing but safely.
Avatar f tn Hello. Detoxing right now can be harmful to the baby who will feel everything the mother is feeling....especially cold turkey. Make an appointment with a doctor to discuss the different possibilities. One possibility is methadone as it is relatively is safe for the baby. Then, after you have the baby you can address your addiction and get off the methadone.
Avatar f tn I went to rapid detox and when I came back I felt awesome for about two weeks, I was doing everything I wanted to do and then I started feeling the withdrawal from the methadone something fierce, it continually got worse each day and I made it six weeks and still felt like total death. No sleep and nothing but cringing when I moved from the air hitting my body. I would have never thought after six weeks you could still feel like day one of withdrawal.
Avatar f tn - As a mom to be, you want to do what’s best for your baby, and getting on something like methadone, which causes a withdrawal syndrome in newborns, may not feel like the right thing to do.
Avatar n tn I went to detox and another person was there to detox off of methadone and for 10 days he had mild symptoms. As I felt like death. When I was leaving the facility, his withdrawals made mine look small by comparison. Dont forget to read up on PAWS, post acute withdrawals, they help explain what happens once your body is clean. They can last 6-18 months after withdrawals.
Avatar n tn from what ive experienced physically wd's last 2-4 days but the mental part (which im going thru now) lasts long time 10-15 days or more.im only day 7 clean. i learned a lot reading other posts. good luck and be careful with the methadone its highly addictive too. good luck keep posting!! also keep in mind-what started you using. were you depressed, if so consider talking to your MD about antidepressants. i started those a week before i quit. hope this helps some. im not an expert on this.
Avatar f tn Hi I am now at 50 mgs of methadone and on my way to get off this stuff, I have been on for 6 years and was at 130 mgs at the highest, so far I am okay but I know I am going to be in trouble soon. I am now tapering at 5 mgs about every 4 weeks, my doctor wants me to switch to Suboxone at 30 mgs and I am highly opposed to this I just want to keep weaning, I wonder if I have a choice , it is worrying me to death, I don't want to switch to that drug, I hear awful things about it.
Avatar n tn Our family has confronted him about this and he says he wants to get off the methadone. He thinks if he goes through rapid detox to get off the methadone and then goes to a counseler - all will be well. Any thoughts or suggestions? I don't want to see my family pay 10K for a treatment that doesn't work or just addresses the chemical part of the addiction.
Avatar n tn I'm sorry to hear about your loss, but considering I think you're being a bit judgemental... you have no proof that her addiction had anything to do with the baby's death... if you do have suspicions you could always request a death certificate and clearly see the baby's cause of death.. methadone addiction for infants is a treatable thing and as long as the hospital knew the mother was taking it during pregnancy the baby should have survived..
1909286 tn?1379435137 Hi, I'm down to 5mg of methadone a day now and I was wondering if anyone knows if the withdrawal from 5mg to 0mg is about the same? Or does it get much worse when u stop altogether? I'm so scared I've heard some say it doesn't matter if u taper all the way to 0mg when u stop it's like death, then I hear that it won't be as bad if u taper all the way down. I would love to hear from someone who has successfully gotten off methadone.
714288 tn?1243254191 You are so very right about the withdrawals, that is why I have so much time spent on it. Scared to death of the withdrawal, but in its defense, for addicts with a long history of drug addiction it can be a lifesaver. WE are able to live a normal life with a normal job but not crave the effects of the harmful drugs. It has helped me do just that then I find out I have hepatitis C that has been dormant for at least 15 years because it has been that long since IV drug use.
Avatar m tn Death from opiate wd is about as infrequant as death from taking aspirin. Sounds like you were physically dependant. Tapering for a non addict, physically dependant person is a much more doable thing then tapering for an addict but great if you can do it.
Avatar m tn to the point where I am scared to death that something horrific is going to happen!! Is this a common side affect? However my last doctor gave me "Wellbutrin" which of course didn't do anything, of course practically no doctor wants to give a "narcotic" such as Xanax to an addict that is trying to get off of pain pills. Is this normal?? I feel like my heart is going to jump out of my chest!!
Avatar m tn 1) Based on the amount and length of use I described above, How bad will my Methadone withdrawal be? I already know it will start at 24 hours. When will it peak, and how long will the major physical withdrawal last? 2) Same question with the Lorazepam. How long will the any physical withdrawal last? But more important is when will the real bad emotional reaction end? 3) Should I quit the Methadone first or both at the same time?
Avatar f tn I returned to methadone as was best option during pregnancy.(fortunately baby had no withdrawal symptoms). Haven't used heroin for about 5 years but so scared of withdrawal, thought i would be on one of the above for life. Baby now 19mths & have been withdrawing slowly so can still fulfill parental (single). I am currently on 4mg and have conflicting info regarding what to do next.
1311475 tn?1274198780 I am now taking 60 mg. of methadone, trying to get off of the methadone to become eligible for other pain treatment. I didn't know where to ask this question. The 1st reason I started taking the methadone was due to heroin abuse, which I started to kill the pain from a car accident. I had dabbled in heroin use prior to my car accident. But have been clean for many years now, thanks to the methadone.
Avatar f tn Hi ..with methadone the withdrawal takes a couple of days to hit methadone has a long half life with that said it also lasts a lot longer your withdrawal will be about 10 days then the physical part is over the thing that makes methadone so hard is the recovery time a lot of that has to do with how long your on it at what dose and your age some people get lucky and have it pass in 30 days most of us it is a 60 to 90 day grind just know you will get well sooner then later keep posing for support.
1690388 tn?1305898762 Hello good folks,I'm tapering down from a very high dose of pain meds for the last 12 yrs i've been going to the same p.clinic. ...From 70 mg methadone to where I'm at today. 20mg 0pana ,15mg msir's ..now due to my stupidity my meds are gone early. My p.dr will not refill until my next appointment..I would love nothing more than to get off of this .However I'm scared to death! I went to a five day detox on my own about a month ago and ended up in er over night w/chest pain.
Avatar n tn Hey Deb - - This will get better. Keep that in mind. Now the reality. Methadone is most likely the hardest obstacle you have in front of you. Ambien and zanax are no walk in the park either. Did your ambien and zanax also go the cold turkey route? That is probably not the optimum way to approach this. You might very well want something for sleep - insomnia is a major obstacle to quiting.
