Common Questions and Answers about Methadone withdrawal babies

methadose

Avatar f tn She still had awful withdrawal the first 24 hours even on methadone. And some mild withdrawal after the methadone tapper had ended. Irritable, shakey, low grade fever and lethargy.
Avatar f tn Studies have shown that babies born by mothers addicted to Methadone , may experience some issues as consequence from the methadone. The most common are smaller head size, low birth weight, and withdrawal symptoms that varies in severity. The majority of these babies will develop in the normal range and size throughout childhood.
Avatar n tn there are many woman that go through their whole pregnancies while on Methadone and end up with healthy babies.... The baby will most likely go through withdrawl when born, but I really dont think that this is a reason to terminate especially considering that you do really want to have the baby... schedule an appt with a DR asap to talk about it and the effects that it could have on the baby... you dont want to live a life time of regret because you terminate when you really dont want to...
Avatar f tn I plan to stay under 50 mgs between the to meds and my doctor tells me they usually don't see withdrawal in babies at that dose.
Avatar f tn Unfortunately, we do see a lot of babies in our hospital that need to be weaned off methadone. Some babies go home with mom just fine on day 2 or 3. Others have had to stay for 6 weeks or longer. It's very tough on those babies and the families. I definitely recommend being on the lowest dose you can handle. In my 11 years experience at the bedside, there is a definite correlation between dose and withdrawal symptoms in baby.
Avatar f tn If you give birth to a baby while still on methadone, baby will go into withdrawal a few days after delivery if you do not breastfeed because of methadone level falling in his or her bloodstream. Breastfeeding while on methadone has been done, but there have been reported cases of respiratory arrests and deaths in infants while breastfeeding from mothers taking pure opiate agonist such as methadone. There are better ways of approaching your situation.
1486105 tn?1288444547 No 1 else can m,ake these decisions for you sweetheart. I have friend who have had babies on methadone and both their babies left hospital in 5days ive never heard of a baby leaving hosp in 3days bcoz i know in scotland baby has 2 be observated for 5days and if all ok they get home.
Avatar m tn All pregnant opiate-addicted women are advised to take methadone as a part of a medically supervised methadone maintenance treatment program. Methadone is currently the only medication approved for the addiction treatment of pregnant women who are addicted to heroin or other opiates. The fetus feels withdrawal symptoms during pregnancy.
Avatar f tn I have been reading so many different stories on different sites about women who took much more than I do and their babies came out perfectly fine, than I have read some where the babies have come out with withdrawal symptoms. . I am just scared and looking for some answers I guess. . Thank you again for responding!
Avatar n tn Actually I'm in the same boat. I'm 17 weeks pregnant and on 10mg. I've had 2 babies while on Methadone the 1st I was on 80mg and she had no withdrawals the 2nd I was on 40mg and she did have withdrawals and spent 12 days in the NICU and was on morphine. I was told it doesn't really depend on your dose if your baby does or doesn't withdrawal, it just depends on the baby. I'm definately trying to get off the Methadone before I have this one.
Avatar f tn - As a mom to be, you want to do what’s best for your baby, and getting on something like methadone, which causes a withdrawal syndrome in newborns, may not feel like the right thing to do.
Avatar n tn is it harder to withdrawal from methadone vs. withdrawaling from lortabs? i was taking 10-15 lt's a day. i am not taking anymore at all. today is the first day i havent taken any. but i will be taking 30mg methadone for only a week, then i am going cold turkey. will it be easier withdrawaling from the week of methadone than it would be to just quit now and withdrawal from the lortabs?
Avatar f tn Im sure the experts will answer you soon. I just wanted to say that I go to a methadone clinic and there are many healthy babies born there all the time. I've seen the doctors on here recommend suboxone for pregnant patients but I think that since suboxone is relatively new compared to methadone, I would worry that they do not know all the negative effects on unborn children yet. Methadone has been around for decades and there is nothing that they do not know already know about it.
Avatar f tn Anyway, i was wondering if anyone has had a baby while on a methadone maintenance program and how it was for the baby after birth in the hospital. I know that most babies born to mothers on methadone experience some withdrawal and have to be weened off of it. How bad is it? was your baby miserable? how long until you could take your baby home from the hospital? How long did your baby not feel good? What did they give your baby?
Avatar n tn The baby might have a higher than normal respiratory rate, runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, inward pulling of the chest when breathing and periods of cyanosis or bluish skin discoloration There is also an increase incidence of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome or SIDS, in methadone babies in comparison to drug-free babies. It's very important for parents to learn the skills needed when caring for their baby as he/she withdraws from passive methadone addiction.
Avatar f tn I returned to methadone as was best option during pregnancy.(fortunately baby had no withdrawal symptoms). Haven't used heroin for about 5 years but so scared of withdrawal, thought i would be on one of the above for life. Baby now 19mths & have been withdrawing slowly so can still fulfill parental (single). I am currently on 4mg and have conflicting info regarding what to do next.
1311475 tn?1274198780 I am now taking 60 mg. of methadone, trying to get off of the methadone to become eligible for other pain treatment. I didn't know where to ask this question. The 1st reason I started taking the methadone was due to heroin abuse, which I started to kill the pain from a car accident. I had dabbled in heroin use prior to my car accident. But have been clean for many years now, thanks to the methadone.
Avatar n tn t been studied like methadone but from my personal experience I know lots of women who have babies on both suboxone and methadone and those babies are all fine. I had a friend tell me just today that she has a friend who is 4 months pregnant and is on suboxone and they found out her baby has down syndrome and she is saying it's from suboxone. Now whether that's true or not....who knows. But I haven't found anything about babies being born with downsyndrome so.... take it from there.
Avatar f tn Get comfortable and form a solid plan with more clarity. Making decisions was so hard during methadone withdrawal. Allow yourself to surrender to this process. One thing at a time. Do what it takes to get in that rehab, let the doctors help you take care of your baby. You can do it, one thing at a time.
Avatar n tn Thank you all for the answers, comments and support. So I am on methadone have never tried suboxone. I was just wondering if anybody had experienced switching to that medication. I have a wonderful OB, we are very close he was there for my previous pregnancies. So I came clean and told him I was on methadone, he knew about my previous problem with pain killers so he said methadone is the safest choice if anything.
Avatar n tn If a pregnant mother is taking daily methadone, and is 7 months pregnant, I know the baby will be addicted to methadone. How serious is the withdrawal process for this little infant. Will there be long term effects? If the mother is considering of giving up the baby for adoption, how do you prepare the adoptive parents for this?
Avatar f tn Put your trust in your doctors and God. Every baby is a blessing. Is it possible your sick from the pregnancy and not the dose you're at? I had horrific morning sickness with my first (all day sickness really.
Avatar n tn I got to know this one lady well and she was 27 and had been addicit to oxycotion for yrs due to medial problems and when they found out she was pregnant they sent her to be put on methadone. She done methadone the whole time she was pregnant. Once she had the baby she (baby) stayed in hospital few extra days and then nothing after that baby was healthy and fine. I still see her from time to time and that little girl is beautiful and is doing wonderful. She is a yr now...
Avatar n tn i cant get up and go to the methadone clinic every morning because of lack of transportation and i have 2 babies. i cant go on like this, but im scared to death of withdrawals. no doctors anywhere near will prescribe suboxone. cant get methadone prescribed either. i tried doing the methadone maintanence but getting a ride is too difficult. how long do the worst withdrawals last and any tips on making it thru??? i start getting chills and pain within 5 hours of not taking anything.

Last thur4day she was sent to a mental health faciltiy because she is seeing things and hears voices. Please can anyone tell me is this somtimes part of the withdrawal or has she possible lost her mind.
Avatar n tn ve been on methadone for 8 years and when my twins were born they waited 7 days and put them on methadone which was not the plan I had in mind for them (I Wonted them to try something like phenobarbital or some easier narcotic but no they put them on methadone once they weighed 5 pounds I took them home on a small dose of methadone once a day they went for there 2 month check up and the doctor said they have out grown there dose just half it than take them off I done this for 2 days and my babie
Avatar f tn a few women at my clinic have had babies with no problems. The ones whose babies did they were taking other things on the side. As long as that is all you are taking everything should be ok. Good luck.
Avatar f tn I was never uncomfortable with withdrawal symptoms, but my pain level was tough to deal with, so I rested more, and basically babies myself...the methadone saved me though, it can be a safe drug if used correctly. Come on, I think we all know if we really need pain meds or just want the buzz. I tapered off methadone by 10 mg a month, I am working on going down to 10mg, but want to cut back on the morphine first (again).
