Methadone vs hydrocodone

Common Questions and Answers about Methadone vs hydrocodone

methadose

Some of you may have seen the recent news surrounding hydrocodone, but I wanted to share it here for those of you who haven't as it’s an important issue that could potentially affect millions of people. To give you a brief overview, an advisory panel to the FDA has recommended tighter restrictions on hydrocodone-containing drugs, which would essentially classify them among the most dangerous prescription medications available to patients.
I've read that methadone w/d is worse than any full agonist opiate because of the 24 - 36 hr half-life (compared to 2 - 4 hrs for oxy or hydro). Symptoms are apparently milder but they last a long time, or so I hear.
They don't give me the same high as HC or Vicodin, but I have heard they are still addictive. Any advice?
I am scared of the damage being done to my liver but because of a botched surgery five yrs ago I need opiates to stabilize my GI tract (long story) Problem is, I've developed musculo-skeletal pain issues that neccessitate the hydrocodone vs. just straight codeine. There is much reference to vitamins and supplements to take to help with w/d, but no specifics. Can anyone give a list of these?
I have been taking hydrocodone for about 2 1/2 years at an increasing rate, ending up with the 7.5 strength and about 18-20 per day. I do have severe arthitis pain and am a 51 year old woman. I have to cut down and recently cut down to 10 a day and have experienced physical and emotional withdrawal symptoms. I have some clonidine and don't know how much to take for withdrawal. What is the recommended dosage.
I'm a about 185 days clean and still learning about forums vs. groups, posts of your own vs posting on other peoples "threads", etc. can all be confusing until you toot around a bit. You're getting it. Don't get discouraged ok? Two things, first.....YOU DESERVE HUGE PRAISE FOR YOUR WEEKS OFF METHADONE!! Don't give up, don't go back ON something. You have so much already behind you. I have no personal experience with methadone, but many forum members DO.
When I read about people putting themselves through torture to get off methadone (or other opioids), I wonder why they are doing it. Methadone in smaller split doses has no bad side effects, but when I have to dose once daily at a clinic I need considerably more methadone to "hold" me for 24hrs. until my next dose (back at the clinic EVERY DAY), and then I suffer from constipation, depression, no libido, etc.
//excoboard.com/exco/index.php?boardid=15464 is GREAT! It is for moms on methadone. I am not on methadone - but the facilitator of that forum - is the best. I called and spoke with her today - and she is truly a GODSEND. She does not belittle you - but only tries to help. If you are reading this post and are preggo - or know someone who is - have them get on this forum and that one too.
DONT USE METHADONE. its THE worst drug to detox from , most never do.
I have access to morphine, hydrocodone, Norco, Oxycodone, and Methadone but I want to wing off of one of them or actually all of them but what is the best way to wing off. I know everyone is going to have different opinions but I'm just curious.
I think this is being beat to death! Sub? No sub? WD? No WD? Methadone vs Sub??? Here's the deal. And this is just the way I see it. Just get the WDs over with, and move on. Don't try to cover the WDs with something that is FAR harder to detox from later on. Sub and methadone are options. We all know that, but I also know, from personal experience with some SERIOUS drugs, that it can be done without either one.
I've been slowly tapering off of a 15 year Methadone maintainence program for about 2 years now. Roughly dropping 5 milligrams every month or so. About a month ago my dose was at 3 mgs. At that point I really didn't feel to bad during the day although the nights were horrible due not being able to sleep. At that point I decided to just stop the meth all together, rather than prolonging the agony of dropping from 3 -2, then 2-1 etc.
I have break through pain, and have been on a pretty high dose of Hydrocodone fir a couple of years now, and I have worked my way up to 50 mg Fentanyl patches but am scared to continue taking the amount of Hydrocodone I have been taking. How much Hydrocodone is safe with 50 MG Fentanyl patches? Thank you all.
If you had someone or some kind of medical facility dispensing a long-acting narc like oxycontin, ms-contin, or even methadone (I read all the time that this drug is actually quite good for pain but has the rep it has because of how it has traditionally been used up to now), you could have a good life without getting strung out.
I am currently taking 2 Percocets a day (10 mg each) and three Methadone a day (10 mg each). Just guessing, I would say that one 5 mg Percocet would be the equivalent of maybe three or four ES Vicodin? I don't think I would even feel I had taken anything if I were to take one 5 mg Percocet, I basically don't feel anything with the 10 mg anymore, so don't ask me why I am still taking them. The ER must have given you a large RX for the Percocet if you are considering taking 10 of them a day.
It would not be worth suffering for 3 days, to do sub for a ski-weekend, and then get back on methadone. Try to find something like hydrocodone or maybe oxy, just keep your goddamn doses low and your nose clean. Also watch out for large ammounts of apap& all that typical ****. These opiates are short lasting, will avert Methadone withdrawals, give you your painkilled energy for the day and if you keep the dose low, won't get you thinking about binging/getting ****** up.
Examples of full agonists are heroin, oxycodone, methadone, hydrocodone, morphine, opium and others. An antagonist is a drug that blocks opioids by attaching to the opioid receptors without activating them. Antagonists cause no opioid effect and block full agonist opioids. Examples are naltrexone and naloxone. Naloxone is sometimes used to reverse a heroin overdose.
gave perscribed me Hydrocodone as well as the Hydrocodone that i was already getting from my Neurologist. I started using them more often (vs. taking them "as needed") and I realized that I couldnt function on a daily basis if I didnt have them. This past Christmas (December '06) I somehow managed to go through 8 bottles of Hydrocodone (qty. 20 - 10/325) in less than 3 weeks.
I realise I am addicted to a cough syrup with hydrocodone(5mg per dose). I go through a 240mg bottle in 8-9 days. My problem is I have allergies of dust and mold that make me cough till I am exhausted or sinus drainage from these allegies that cause sinus infections that settle in my chest and it starts all over again. I take it as a maintenance to keep from all my symptoms coming to the uncontrollable cough to the tickle in my throat that drives me nuts.
It's been the very best source for me in the last week than I could have hoped for. Regarding the drinking vs. meds. I stopped my daily glass (or two) of wine cold turkey 1 yr ago Feb. I began getting ill due to the fact I was also taking Lortab and Oxy everyday for chronic joint/back pain. I thought I was "smart" enough to cut out the alcohol so I would be "kind" to my liver. Have a 13 yr old daughter.
I think sub or methadone is sometimes like a holding pattern . Is that bad? maybe not is some cases.. There aren't always drug solutions for drug addiction.
Had I known what the use of methadone was going to do to me long term, looking back over 10+ years of methadone use, I would have absolutely taken the hit on the pills vs. a methadone kick. It's rough. ALL WD's are rough, but I've been through pill WD and it was pretty short term compared to Methadone. All I can say is different strokes... just get ALL the info up front before you opt for methadone.
I have experienced w/d from methadone, morphine, oxycontin, codeine and hydrocodone. The worst is methadone, but tapering will help get you through it. I did and it is not easy and I pray for your success. It can be done as I am proof. A good thing to do, is to have somebody keep your pills and administer them to you when needed. That really sucks having to do that but my wife did that for me. I wouldnt have gotten as far as I did without her.
I'm afraid I have no medical info to help you with (doc dan, if you're out there, please help this guy!). But I can observe, if I were getting enough methadone to control pain, I can't imagine being depressed. I just can't quite see it. Perhaps it wouldn't hurt to try going off the anti-depressants entirely for a week or so and seeing how you feel. Effexor is an SSRI, like Paxil. You can compare the two by going to: www.rxlist.
My question is, did you guys experience any weight fluctuations while on hydrocodone? I have always struggled to keep weight on, but noticed I lost weight I really couldn't stand to lose while on these pills. I'm 6'6", 185 lbs normally, which is still a bit on the thin side, but after a 10 month bender I am down to around 172, which is way too thin for my height. What has been your experiences with weight loss/gain while taking these pills?
