Common Questions and Answers about Methadone pregnancy

methadose

Avatar n tn hi i need help, my sister is 8 months pregnant, is on methadone and was just perscribed promethazine, cyclobenzaprine and zolpidem are these safe drugs to mix with methadone and pregnancy? she did just recently switch doctors for unexplained reasons..
Avatar f tn It can be dangerous if not done under a doctors care who understands methadone. Most clinics you go to that get you started on methadone understand what to do when you are preg. Please understand that methadone is better than any street drug or narcotic drug(even if perscribed by a doctor. You really should not try to detox off anything while preg. Your body will go into withdraws which in turn will put alot of stress on the baby.
Avatar f tn Most physicians have little to no experience with (or much knowledge of) methadone and how it works and especially methadone and pregnancy. A doctor must hold special licensing to prescribe methadone for opiate addiction, and have the appropriate opiate-substitution training to do so. Therefore, you may not always get the current or correct advice from a general physician or OB-GYN. Your methadone clinic can't steer you to an OB-GYN with the correct addiction training.
Avatar n tn I feel very strongly that methadone is not the best choice for drug treatment during pregnancy. I am sure you want what is best for your baby and so do I. Methadone is an opiate, very long acting one and very addictive. You are still opiate dependent and if you continue to be on methadone through your pregnancy, your child will also be born opiate dependent. Your baby will be in withdrawals after birth and will have be spend time in the Neonatal ICU to go through those withdrawal.

Avatar f tn Tell your doctor asap so you can start taking methadone. The withdrawals may harm your baby and for that reason most likely be put on methadone. Sadly your baby will be born addicted to it and go through withdrawals too. I wish you the best of luck.

Avatar n tn I am also 9 months pregnant and taking suboxone. My doctor told me the baby might go through whithdrawls but Im beeter on suboxone than taking other drugs. The withdrawls won't be as bad as methadone or any other drug, Just make sure you tell your doctors and nurses in the delivery room because they will have to have oxygen ready. I'll let you know if I have any problems. My due date is March 24. Good Luck!
Avatar n tn I have a few articles about pregnancy on methadone and on Subutex at my blog, Suboxone Talk Zone-- just go there and search for the posts about pregnancy and you should find them. I agree with the prior comment-- we don't know of serious problems from opiates in neonates. The worst part will likely be the judgmental attitudes you will be given by the hospital staff. As for the withdrawal, there are a couple things to remember.
Avatar f tn I would rather stay on oxycodone during the pregnancy than switch to methadone. much harder to quit, much longer withdrawals, and this will affect baby as well....I'm on pregnancy #4 (child #3, my first was a miscarriage) and with all three pregnancies I've had to take pain meds, including oxycodone at one time during my first two pregnancies for kidney stones/other problems....and both of my babies are fine and healthy.
Avatar f tn there are people who take methadone though there whole pregnancy because the risk of with draw is worse for the baby and there babys can be born fine and methadone is synthetic heroin so im sure if you were to quit now your baby will be fine im sure oxys are not as bad as methadone
1825630 tn?1317572157 Is it better to decrease your methadone intake as much as poss during pregnancy - and also how much more dangeous is it to inject ampoules than taking methadone pills, on the foetus?
Avatar f tn Hey and welcome :) I will post some information below for you. Withdrawals can cause some issues so your going to want to make an appointment with an OB to discuss your options. Dont be afraid though...be honest with your doc and it will be fine. There are many pregnant women who come here with the same issue and it ends up fine so long as they go see a doc.
Avatar f tn Yea you definitely need to let your OB know. They need to know ANY kind of medicine your on. I'm guessing your probably on the methadone program and after you talk to your OB you can tell them that you are pregnant and you doc suggested so and so and they can start lowering your doses slowly so you won't get withdrawl symptoms.
Avatar f tn Geesha, what about cyclobenzapine? And what does methadone have to do with tramadol? Methadone treats addiction problems. I'm on bupenerophine, which is kind of like methadone but supposed to be better.
Avatar f tn My nephew is a methadone baby....I don't think methadone would be best choice.... I feel for u in this time.... you can do this ..,your not alone and when you go through withdrawals talk to us... scream, whatever..its not going to be easy... but I believe you want this!
Avatar n tn When we had pregnant women coming in our doctor would advise them that it was okay to stay on a relatively low dose of methadone until delivering b/c going off methadone (or other opiates) could cause severe withdrawals (if done too fast) an this could pose a risk to the baby.
1412606 tn?1282882129 What pain meds can I use for chronic pain during pregnancy. Of course I will talk to a Doctor before I get pregnant, so please don't say go to your doctor. I would like to know specific medications that have been prescribed to patients who are pregnant with nerve pain?
Avatar f tn I'm on methadone as well, this is my first pregnancy. Depending on the state you live in and the hospitals policy where you deliver, CPS might get called because you're on methadone... But as long as you're clean and doing everything right they probably won't even follow up with a report... Just a heads up.
Avatar f tn Hi mommy, welcome to the forum. Congrats on your pregnancy. How long have you been taking the Methadone? Please listen to your OB. As long as they know you are on methadone, they will be prepared to take care of your baby. Don't just stop the methadone, cause you will experience withdrawals, and your baby feels what you do. Try not to worry. Make sure you ask your doctor any questions you have, and follow his direction.
