So, I just poured myself a glass of grapefruit juice and took my medicine - then for some reason I remembered that grapefruit juice interacts with some medications. I just did a quick search online and here is a list (probably not complete) of some medications that interact badly with grapefruit juice. Including some opiates.... Please be careful! a small part of the piece I read: "Amy Karch, R.N., M.S.
one of those is methadone - Iam on 150ml's per day which is a VERY high dose and I use both Phytosomed Milk Thistle called Siliphos (100mg Silybin - which is the REAL active ingredient) and that has a 8-10x better absorption rate than standard milk thistle products - I also take a capsule form of milk thistle, 2 at night = 280mg Silymarin (which is about 200mg Silybin without the super-absorption) - ON TOP OF THIS I drink Pure Grapefruit Juice and eat 1 Pink Grapefruit per day...
This, initially the drug does not completely metabolize and has an extended half-life. This why it is dangerous to take grapefruit juice with certain medications. Follow me on this. You take a substance that reduces the production of these enzymes (say grapefruit juice) and for the first four hours the drug does not fully metabolize. After six hours the grapefruit juice wears off, the liver again starts producing these enzymes, and you take a second dose of the medication.
Drugs That Interact With Grapefruit Juice Here are some drugs that interact with grapefruit juice. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're concerned about any of your medications.
Some nutrients interfere with certain enzymes grapefruit juice prevents enzymes that turn acetaminophen (Tylenol) into a deadly toxin, protecting against Tylenol’s extreme toxicity to the liver and kidneys. That being said! grapefruit juice can also prolong the effects of caffeine by preventing the liver from detoxifying it. The following protects against toxicity.
Hey everyone, I'm on methadone too for 6 years now and have gone from 115 lbs of firm, smooth muscle to 160 lbs of cellulite-covered, jiggly fat. Yum. I'm on 70 mg, just like you, Suziblues. Not a really high dose, but enough to pack on the pounds apparently. I have found that it's REALLY hard to lose weight on this stuff... but I agree that I'd rather be overweight than strung out again.
THAT IF YOU DRINK GRAPEFRUIT JUICE IN SAME TIME WHEN YOU DRINK YOUR DOSAGE OF METHADONE (METADON) HCL IT BECOMES MORE POTENT...IDK...DO YOU KNOW ?? === And my plans for Methadone are long,i think ,and I was adviced at my sessions that Methadone therapy should be long-lasting because long use of opiates (esspecially heroin) leads to brain chemistry disorder and disorder in it's biological sense.

thanks Research about the interaction of grapefruit juice with drugs suggests that compounds in grapefruit juice, called furanocoumarins (for example, bergamottin), may be responsible for the effects of grapefruit juice. Researchers believe that furanocoumarins block the enzymes in the intestines that normally break down many drugs. One glass of grapefruit juice could elicit the maximum blocking effect, and the effect may persist for longer than 24 hours.
* Anthelmintics (Used for treating certain parasitic infections, includes praziquantel albendazole and mebendazole) * carbamazepine (Tegretol) Grapefruit or grapefruit juice slows the breakdown of this drug, increasing the level of it in blood * Loperamide (Imodium), the anti-diarrhea drug * colchicine (Colcrys) The CYP3A4 isoform of cytochrome P450 is located in both the liver and the enterocytes. Many oral drugs undergo first-pass (presystemic) metabolism by the enzyme.
I took about 3 Loperamide tabs, 3 Potassium pills, and 1 Diazepam pill before bed (Drinking a glass of grapefruit juice after). Despite the meds, I could not get to sleep due to RLS, until my girlfriend started massaging my calves, and I fell asleep right away. I woke up about an hour later, and could not get back to sleep. I was almost in tears. I gave-in and took a 1/2mg of suboxone. I took a hot bath, where I remained restless, and lied back down.
chocolate, benedryl, and grapefruit juice. I can't drink grapefruit juice, but the chocolate and benedryl were very helpful. Chocolate helps you produce endorphines, the benedryl helps to reduce some of the cold sweats and also helps you sleep. After taking Ambien for nearly 3 years, being able to sleep without having to take it was my first first glimpse of light at the end of the tunnel. Oh yeah. I'm not sure what the juice was to supposed to do, but it was supposed to help.
That is why there is a warning about drowsiness on the bottle. If a person ingests Loperimide after taking a quantity of grapefruit juice and or black pepper, it will cross the blood brain barrier, though not very much will make it. It is enough though to cut withdrawals down considerably. Loperimide was originally meant to be a opioid pain killer, but in 99% of the populationit doesn't cross the barrier and is only an agonist of the Mu opioid receptors in the gut.
I took a vitamin, and a potassium pill, and have been drinking grapefruit juice. The taste of the grapefruit juice seems to help with the bad taste in my mouth. I took a shower after a bath in Epsom salt, but it didn't help much, sweating like a ditch digger again. I also have been noticing I seem to smell these weird odors, like rotting meat, but there is nothing here like that. I am having muscle spasm in places that I never had them before, my wrist, my feet, and my fingers.
You really need to seek treatment before it causes greater damage. I didn't know about grape juice. I know that grapefruit juice will potentate any narcotics. It causes them to metabolize slower in your body. The slower opiates metabolize the more that is used by the body. Grapefruit juice will make opiates feel 2 times stronger and last 2 times as long in some people. The same thing with some antacids especially Tagament.
Taking the occasionall 10/325 Norco if and when I'm lucky enough to stumble upon some when I can no longer bare the non-stop burning, mind-numbing, stinging, knee buckling pain. I find that taking it on an empty stomach with 3/4 cup Grapefruit juice followed by a glass of water helps me. Though I don't recommend it for everyone.
I get Kidney Stones and last time was put on 8 MG of Diluadid every 4 hours from 2/15/09 to 4/29/09, boosting this with grapefruit juice and frequently adding 10-30 mgs of Oxycodone for breakthrough pain. That’s includes IV at the hospital a few times. Well over 2 months HEAVY Diluadid (Hydromorphine) use. With this regiment week one was pretty awful but doable; and I survived without taking more opiates or the ER or rehab.
A good diet is always better than supplements so whole grains, vegetables, legumes, bananas, prune juice ( will also help with morphine constipation ), nuts everyday. No interactions with any Rx but some fruits can increase the potency of a drug.
It might help if you got some opiate potentiators too (grapefruit juice, tums, xanax, soma etc.) to make the best use of what you have left.
The pain is every morning around 4 am and wakes me up with a level 10 pain. It is exactly in the center of my epigastric area. I take Carafate and Methadone. I have been suffering for 13 years and saw your post about redirecting the bile into the colon. I would fly to you specifically for the surgery if it will take away this daily debilitating pain. I also will call your office on Monday 6/3.
But in my experience after four days things begin to improve and you begin to take ownership of your mind and body again. To help with the withdrawals drink grapefruit juice as this helps to get toxins out of the body, vitamin and mineral supplements or a vitamin tonic, an antehistamine (drowsy) taken at night will also keep your sinuses clear, drink plenty of fluids and have warm baths and eat healthy. Ibuprofen also help with the muscle aches and fever and remember throughout IT WILL END.

Nice my specialist, noted as one of the top in North American never mentioned that one to me. As to the rest, well, it was indeed enlightening.
