If you give birth to a baby while still on methadone, baby will go into withdrawal a few days after delivery if you do not breastfeed because of methadone level falling in his or her bloodstream. Breastfeeding while on methadone has been done, but there have been reported cases of respiratory arrests and deaths in infants while breastfeeding from mothers taking pure opiate agonist such as methadone. There are better ways of approaching your situation.

I was on 60 mgs of methadone through my pregnancy. I am breastfeeding my son. He is 7 months old. When he stops breastfeeding will he go through withdraw? His Dr when he was 4 weeks old said he could if I stopped suddenly and than at 4 months said he wouldn't if I stopped. I could stop whenever. I don't plan on stopping until he weans himself but I would like to know if he will go through withdraw if I stop suddenly and if he weans.

I have no experience with methadone but wanted to say congrats to you for being sober and strong!

Well I just found out that I am 3 weeks pregnant and unfortunately have been addicted to methadone for around 3 years now. I am very concerned about the health of my baby, I've done some research but would like to hear others opinions. (and please no bashing, i know its wrong and i didn't plan it) Plus I'm not going through a methadone clinic so not sure how the doctor will handle that aspect (though my main concern is the child).

I have gastroparesis, and GERD, and am on methadone maintenance. I noticed I started having problems as soon as I started the Methadone Clinic, 3 yrs ago. I recently had an endoscopy and waiting on the biopsy results. I'm so sick of not being able to eat anything. I'm living off of oatmeal and can't over eat. But it's not over eating because I've been starving. I can only eat a small bowl of oatmeal before I take my methadone and then another small one for lunch.

sleep problems, the therapist informed me that the sleep problems are associated with anxiety from my body not having methadone, basically after getting off methadone I developed what he called a busy mind, thinking about many things while trying to sleep, but even after getting the knowledge about what was happening I still couldnt sleep, so he contacted my primary care doctor & she put me on trazodone, which by the way is a antidepressant that worked very well for me, Im now sleeping agai

I was really excited about being a new mother except for the fact that I am on methadone. I have been on it since January 2010 (11 months). During the summer, I was at 120 mg.. I ended up going into a detox to possibly get off of it and ended up going down to 24 mg. I am at 35 mg. now because I was getting withdrawal symptoms and heard the baby's detox can be worse if you withdraw during the pregnancy.

If you are unable to taper off during the pregnancy both Suboxone and Subutex have been used safelyduring breastfeeding. As long as you are breastfeeding the baby after the delivery, s/he will not suffer withdrawals. Baby will taper off safely as it weans from the breast naturally. I am concerned about breastfeeding, but the doctors are encouraging me to do so. Surely if I wean the baby off the methadone after birth, then breastfeeding with simply re-addict him. I need to discuss this with my mid-wife, I realise, but I thought you might have some input. If you do have any advice I would love to hear from you.

OK so first let me say I'm NOT planning on doing this, but my best friend and I were talking and she tried to tell me that it is safe to smoke pot when breastfeeding, it doesn't go into the milk. But I don't understand that because if you drink you have to not feed till it's out of your system why would put be any different? She said if they give you pain killers after a c section pot should be fine. I'm just like smh this makes no sense.

But no methadone is not the only safe method. I was on a methadone clinic for 2 years and it was awful. Every one calls it liquid handcuffs. They hold out on giving you your dose for any little reason and they don't want to see you succeed. I tried to detox off and the dr there said he didn't think I was ready because I was too young. I was 28 at the time and hadn't given one dirty urine the whole 2 years I was there.

He thinks I want to keep poppin pills. The only reason I am on Methadone is because I cant be sick! I want to ween down, and detox so bad, but I heard from many people that it is unsafe for my unborn child! I am on 50mgs a day. I told my OB, he basically told me I need to find another doctor!! F*cked UP!! He has never dealt with my situation! Instead of doing research and trying to help me, he told me I needed to go to a Primary doc to get a legal script of methadone!

From what i understand(not an expert here lol) most babies are actually born with an addiction to it, if it's used during pregnancy.

Hi, I am 37 weeks pregnant have been tapering off methadone... I have gone from 20mg/day down to 5mg/day... I am planning to decrease to 2.5mg/day and hopefully be off before my csection. Can anyone tell me from experience, if my baby will be born addicted and have w/d symptoms?... I am deathly afraid of my baby being sick. My husband will probably divorce me and my family will disown me.

I have been in pain management for 3 years. I currently take 15 mg of methadone and 60 mg of oxycodone 2 times a day. This is a hight dose of meds. My Doctor has told me that it is fine for me to be taking these meds. She said that there is a chance that the baby could go through withdrawels, but it would be monitored by the hospital and not to worry. I am feeling really paranoid about this, but I want to follow my doctors advice.

i am on methadone maintenance for opiate addiction, if methadone is also an opiate blocker what prescription meds will give me relief from my pain? i mean, do i take higher doses of opiate to get relief from my pain or is there a certain pain med i need to take while on methadone to get relief from my pain? please HELP!!!!

I am wondering what damage is already done to my fetus, or what damage will be done if I continue the 2-3 a day... Also, I plan on breastfeeding- can this be done if I am taking the meds??

i agree with the others i would not take methadone to come off of tramdol at all because the w/d from methadone is 100x worse then tramdol ever could be. I am on methadone and its helped me but also when I come off it will be hard. You can read all kinds post on here about m'done detox....

Hi I am new to Medhelp so if I double posted I am sorry. Anyway I am preg and was addicted to hydrocodone 10 mg 3X a day. I wanted to just stop cold turkey but was unable to cause of the WD and being preg. I went to a Dr w/my OB's advice to get on Suboxone,but he wouldn't cause he said Methadone is what is used while preg as it is safe? He started me on 10 mg 3X day which is WAY to strong so I am now trying 5mg 2X a day.
