Methadone and hospice

Common Questions and Answers about Methadone and hospice

methadose

Avatar f tn Morphine is preferred for the treatment of COPD because a doctor can better control its effect on breathing, however, both morphine and methadone work in similar ways -- it is just that methadone suppresses the breathing longer. At end of life, it doesn't matter much which medication you use. If your husband had an allergy to morphine, then methadone is definitely the proper medication to give. Death is not often a pleasant experience, especially death from lung cancer.
Avatar m tn m very sorry to read that you have reached the end of your life My heart goes out too you and your family. I do not understand why Hospice took away your Methadone if that was working for you and this is your desire.. I do know I have worked with hospice before and we had to argue to get the right Amount of meds delivered for comfort for my Mother.. I too have Hep C, for 3 decades and I'm on Dialysis. We are in the process of figuring out the best way to fight the Hep C, I'm terrified.
Avatar f tn She was fired and I have since come down on what before this was called a cadd box which housed liquid Dilaudid in huge quantities. I am accustomed to what a detox is and went for it and ran from the hospice situation - though I am dying of a painful rare and slow disease. I am proud of myself and now before she leaves she converts me from the Dilaudid (mind you 32mg per hour!!!!!) Don't know how i am alive and kicked it.
Avatar f tn I am hoping I might get assistance finding a pain management doctor in Pittsburgh or Philadelphia who would continue to prescribe my methadone.(my mother recently went into hospice and I have been traveling back and forth from the two cities.) The accident, I was a rear seat passenger in a car which hit a telephone pole right where I was sitting. I have a Pittsburgh address, but am looking to possibly relocate to Philadelphia, as that is the area my family is from.
1396990 tn?1280428984 My brother in law had brain cancer and died in Arizona. Hospice was great for my sister in that instance. I still carry many regrets for listening to their advise and letting my son die in the fashion that he did. The guilt and grief will never go away. It haunts me. Check the particular Hospice company that you use very thoroughly. This time is a crucial and extreme process. Be very, very careful of whose hands you deliver you loved ones into.
Avatar m tn And when he did pass, the hospice nurse was right there with him. She noticed his breathing had changed and stayed there. She called us immediately. At least look over the form, see what you think. And if you think he'll end up with hospice care, see what they allow or disallow. BTW, my Dad finally died from cancer; his heart kept going till the end.
Avatar f tn She is very weak and Hospice has finally gotten her uncontrollable nausea and dry heaving under control. She does have a bowel obstruction, tumors (I don't know what ascites are?) etc., and has become very weak, very quickly. She tends to sleep her days away and I am not sure if it is because of the cancer or the medications she is on. It is just hard to see her decline after being so strong and positive for so long. Any information you can pass on is very helpful and much appreciated.
Avatar m tn Father in assisted-living residence. Recently pretty-much bedridden. Hospice care started this week. Protonix given daily - is it needed? Asymptomatic and no hx of gastric reflux.
Avatar n tn I have taken care of him (Primary) as well as my husband and now my son for the last 3 years and Hospice a year and a half. He has no use of his legs or hands since the first 6months. He was in a Nursing home but we brought him home In the last few months I have watched his urine change color to amber then bloody looking to normal yellow. He coughs at times. We have suction Machine but nothing else other than oxygen to help him for He has a DNR order ( do not resuscitate.
Avatar n tn I have recently found out that he obviously abused cocaine in the past and he had to go to a methadone clinic years ago. Everyone is entitled to pain treatment but should hospice be supporting his habit? He would hide his good medicines (lasix, spirolactone, propananol, lactulose). but yet he only took up his pain meds as well as any other he could get.
Avatar n tn Because she is experiencing no symptoms she is hesistant to participate in a home hospice program. What symptoms are generally experienced and if possible a general timeline for disease progression.
Avatar f tn My Mom is in end stage COPD and CHF and it has been a battle of "wills" and "won'ts" between my sisters and my mothers care....My Mom is on Hospice care and I believe in there "mission" for "comfort care" but my sisters think that my Mom is/will become a "drug addict" (my Mom can be given Morphine and Ativan if her respirations get too high... (and my Mom has been having respirations up into the 40's - normal is between 18 to 20....
Avatar n tn two problems 1 I work and cant be home with him all the time and 2 he is an alcholic and will get booze from someone I am afraid can u give me some solutions to these problems
1264367 tn?1408104163 I have gastroparesis, and GERD, and am on methadone maintenance. I noticed I started having problems as soon as I started the Methadone Clinic, 3 yrs ago. I recently had an endoscopy and waiting on the biopsy results. I'm so sick of not being able to eat anything. I'm living off of oatmeal and can't over eat. But it's not over eating because I've been starving. I can only eat a small bowl of oatmeal before I take my methadone and then another small one for lunch.
Avatar f tn age, we have a need for basic knowledge in how to know when to consider Palliative and/or Hospice Care. Professionals like myself, a Hospice Nurse has the better knowledge as to the hands on assistance that enrollment in a Palliative Care Program or a Hospice Program can give. So I believe that you should add Palliative/Hospice/End of Life Issues to both your questions from the general public and the knowledge areas of your professionals.
Avatar n tn Her Doctor said she could no longer live alone, and my parents decided to take her in. The Doctor advised hospice. Hospice workers came to my parents house, and told my parents that they should not call 911 if my Grandmother has another heart attack, that they should help my Grandmother die comfortably at home. My parents do not want to do this, they are not comfortable with that. When they voiced their concerns, they were overridden by the hospice worker.
438514 tn?1305734140 I remember reading that there's a difference between palliative care and hospice. Palliative care offers pain relief and life prolonging care (such as special nutritional needs) even if they can't offer a cure. It can be given at any time during a disease. Hospice care is usually only given if a person has less than 6 months left. I found this portion of a definition comparing the two: Palliative care is NOT the same as hospice care.
905378 tn?1244854365 My prayers are with your mom and you. I am sorry she is in pain. Hospice can be a huge help and I hope your mom is comfortable soon.
Avatar f tn If you suspect that she is suffering needlessly due to their stupidity, then you should contact her doctor - and/or the hospice management - and be sure that she has access to whatever pain control she wants and needs. And that, FD, may be the most helpful and compassionate action that you can take to assist your MIL!!
Avatar f tn m wondering if you can help me understand hospice better. My mom (91) had alzheimers and was in a facility. Last Sept they suggested hospice because she had stopped eating. I couldn't bring myself to agree and then she started eating again - then in Dec she stopped eating again, looked skeletal and I then put her on Hospice - She died 5 days later after getting pneumonia - her death cert listed alz as cause of death.
Avatar f tn the doctor has us contact hospice on an in home basis early this month he is still able to get around and he goes out occassionally in the mornings. They are asking me if i think he needs to be on hospice or if I wan to tka ehim off until he gets worse. I dont kow what to do I'm frightened he almost died two weeks ago and they gave him four units of blood.
Avatar f tn My 89 yo father has COPD and his recent time in the hospital he became constipated with no bowel movements. They tried many things (suppositories, enemas, miralax and a myriad of home remedies) with still no success. A CT scan showed both stool and gases in his colon. A sigmoidoscomy relieved some of this but not much. We were told he isn't a candidate for a full colonoscomy without a lot of risk. He was sent home with hospice. He has gotten very weak and can't even sit up without help.
Avatar f tn Someone I love has been told there is a 70 percent right coronary artery blockage and they have suffered two recent mild heart attacks testing and cath reveals that their heart function is 24 percent not a good surgical canidate for other health issues including but not limited too diabetes and bile duct blockages and portal vein hypertention and copd, what can I expect now and how can I best help them?

1751415 tn?1315069443 He sleeps constantly, has very little appetite (if any at all), and is in constant pain. Recently the hospice staff put him on morphine. His appetite has picked up just a bit. When I asked about it the nurse said morphine is known to increase a person's appetite. Is this true???
