Methadone and fentanyl

Common Questions and Answers about Methadone and fentanyl

methadose

Avatar m tn ve seen of fentanyl detox and my own year long, slow methadone recovery, I think fentanyl and methadone are only different in dosage. The full synthetic nature and side effects of both methadone and fentanyl make them very close tie for the worst detox ever. As I vomit and shat myself in my yard from methadone detox, I remember wishing I was a heroin or any other kind of addict. Anyway, mute point, but wanted to share. How much and how long methadone use have you got under your belt bullseye?
Avatar n tn I have been on Fentanyl patches for about 6 months and it was prescribed to wean me off of Norco 10/325 2 pills 4 x day after a surgery. I got as high as 75 mcg patch of Fentanyl every 3 days and then I developed some kind of allergy. The Pain Dr. says the allergy is to the adhesive, not the fentanyl. I am now down to 37 mcg every 2 days because the patches itch like crazy. I wake up in the morning and my patches are scratched off(even withTagederm) and there is blood on my sheets. My Dr.
Avatar f tn I have been in pain management for over 15 years and on 40mg of methadone. Dr. thought it was affecting my heart so he switched me to dilaudid 4mg every 8 hours. 2 days later I was in full blown withdrawels. After about 3 weeks I began to think I might live, Dr. kept telling me I shouldn't be having withdrawels. The dilaudid only lasted 2-3 hours, if I waited 8 hours I was hurting so bad the medicine was'nt doing me any good, besides it just was'nt enough. Next visit Dr.
Avatar f tn Due to medical problems I have been on pain medication for at least 30 years, I am 60 at this time, 5 weeks ago had 2nd knee replacement, I have tried many times to get off Methadone, I usually run out before prescription is due and suffer severe w/d. Like everyone else I do not want to be tied to this drug, it is the worse, I have been on it about 5 years.
Avatar m tn would they switch you over to fentanyl and then taper the fentanyl and then move you to an oral med???
Avatar n tn I am changing from methadone 15mg every 6 hours to Fentanyl 100 mg every 48 hours. I also take opana for breakthrough pain. I am a DAV hurt in a war and am always in pain. Is the amount of Fentanyl equal with the metaadone ??
Avatar f tn Then a couple friends showed up and gave me a few fentanyl pills. The subs blocked most of that but I feel ok. I have to work again in 8 hrs. I have about 6 more pills of fentanyl. I know if I use them I'll get through work but I don't want to start a fentanyl addiction.i was wondering if I take subs instead if I'll just get sick again or if they'll help now. I need to work or I'll lose my car. That's the only reason I'm considering taking the fentanyl tomorrow.
Avatar m tn i got on methadone to get off oxycontin once i knew i could get high on fentanyl even with taking methadone [methadone is an opiate blocker] and the fentanyl breaks right threw the methadone....so it has to be stronger than methadone but see i wanna stop now....I'm not gunna withdraw as bad on the methadone but i still feel like **** though. I wonder how long the withdrawls lasts with fentanyl????
6815927 tn?1395511425 I would never recommend Methadone for a Fentanyl taper. Methadone is ten times harder to come off of and comes with lots of side effects. I think if you continue a slow taper with the Fentanly you will have success. What will you be doing for pain management once you come off?
374225 tn?1269899262 Thanks for this. The doctor weened me off methadone onto Fentanyl and I discovered that Fentanly makes me feel like I'm in withdrawal. So now... I'm tapering off the Fentanyl. I've been on pain medicine for so long it barely works and I think I'm sick of being dependant. This Fentanyl taper is driving me nuts now. Advil and Flexaril to the rescue forevemore!!! Of course I'm doing that thanks to 3 cortizone injections 10 days ago at L3-L4, L4-L5, and S1.
Avatar f tn Recently my oncologist of a year at the same clinic that put me on the fentanyl 5 years ago has decided she wants me to go off fentanyl and take methadone instead. I will have to be hospitalized and go through detox for a week, but I havent heard much in the way of assurance that methadone will be able to control the pain I will have again if it doesnt work. I have asked what my options will be and I am told "she doesnt have time to teach me".
Avatar f tn At the end of the visit this dr told my son he was giving him the fentandy patch and taking him off the methadone. My son ran out of his methadone yesterday and has no way of coming off of this strong medication. I have already packed my overnight bag for the hospital because unless God intervenes we will be on our way within a couple of days for methadone severe withdrawals. Now, I know you are asking yourselves what kind of person would do that to another human being; so are we.
Avatar n tn Sounds like you need to start looking for a new pain doctor. It seems strange to me that you're on both those medications as my understanding is they're both long-acting medications. What I've usually seen is people having a long-acting med and then they take something short-acting in between for the breakthrough pain. Methadone has a long half-life and shouldn't be stopped cold turkey, especially at the dosage you're on. It should be tapered down very slowly.
Avatar f tn I am going to get off the Fentanyl patches and put on Methadone using Suboxone as a bridge .I have never heard of this med called Suboxone.I am on 200mcg of Fentanyl how long will it take to get off the fentanyl?
16785591 tn?1451596681 I understand your wife's concern. Seniors have to be especially cautious when taking opiates - or most any medication. That's another long subject that I will avoid at this time - but it is a fact. There are multiple sources on Methadone in pain management. There are also good and and not so good outcomes in using Methadone for pain management. I'll be honest with you - it scares me - especially in seniors. About ten years ago my PMP ordered it for me on a trial bases.
897990 tn?1248268956 Thats a way to overdose very easily chewing the fentanyl releases the full time releae dose for three (3) days immdiately..........combining with methadone is the worst possible combination - they combine to make the most rapid and lethal mix for respiratory deperssion and arrest - - - only way to OD faster is to add a particular bemzo ........ you wont know that you stopped breathing until its way too late.......
Avatar f tn Hi there I'm new to this but I've got the answer to what ya asked because I'm going through the exact same stuff. I decreased my Fentanyl patch from 100mcg to 50 the to 25mcg. After 3 years I decided I'm done and never put on another patch it's been 24 day's now. I also got off of methadone and MS contin in the last year all with the tapering approach.
Avatar f tn Was not sure if hydromorphyn was the were i wanted to be after the fentanyl patch situation i was in. Methadone was hard to get off of bit fentanyl patch was worse to withdraw from than methadone, to me that is. So hince the inquiry about the two meds. With what i am taking now i still have pain but yes can manage with a 3/4 pain level. Just not sure how the hydromorphyn would do any better. Knowing also that my tolerance would probably increase on it.
Avatar n tn OMG no!!! Using fentanyl patches to get OFF of methadone? You'd be headed for serious trouble with that plan. Check with your Dr. to get a good plan in place to get off the meth. You'd only be trading addictions with this plan. Good luck to you! And talk to your Dr.!!
2066663 tn?1331993339 Yes I do have questions about fentanyl patches, I was informed that fentanyl was an opioid not an opiate. What is the difference? And I am aware how opiates work on our brain, the receptors, the release of too many endorphins, and seritonin levels from the opiates, that block our natural pain fighting endorphins. Does fentanyl patches do the same thing?
168732 tn?1311712079 I myself am on 10mg methadone 2xday. and dilauid for breakthrough(4mg). I take the methadone in the morning and at bed time. I take the others at lunch and dinner.( I am bad abot not taking my dilauid though I trying to get better. I had my doctor take me off the methadone after a year, because I thought I would be okay without it. I was taken off slowly. Now my pain is horrable, I am in the hospital now even. He put me back on it.
515278 tn?1318971526 I was on methadone 100mg for 3 years. I was doing alot of fentanyl on top. I quit the fentanyl cold turkey and I did a 6month methadone taper and have been off it for nearly 2 weeks now. The hardest part by far was stopping the fentanyl. Other than that the withdrawals have been quite manageable. Just wondering about this... Anyone know what this is? Normal wds? Why did it only start lately? I was feelin worse withdrawals before.
Avatar m tn s are VERY mild this time around! I was really expecting to go to hell and back with this fentanyl withdrawal but so far it has been 10x easier than my oxy withdrawals I went through last year. Anyone have any theories why my w/d this time around has not been nearly as bad as last time? I have been dependent for about 4 months this time around, using mainly oxy/dilaudid/fentanyl but I havent had oxy in awhile mainly just fentanyl and dilaudid.
2066663 tn?1331993339 hello thanks for your input iv just come of off fentanyl it was a long hard process but once i got into rehab thay stabelised me on methadone iv only been on methadone for coming up 3 weeks now and its only 40 mill.i was on 300 mills of fentanyl and i changing every 24 hour,s.
1312494 tn?1273749561 But the hospital would not prescribe the methadone either. They gave me another 100mcg/h Fentanyl patch and a referral to a pain management specialist. He is not available for another month and there is no guarantee he will prescribe the methadone either. I am seriously concerned about not having anything for the pain. I no longer take the Oxycodones and did not renew my prescription this month because I have plenty of them and they do not work at all when the pain is this severe.
Avatar n tn story , I ended up with Methadone for A) the price is almost free , and B) I had been on these before for detox and so knew what to expect. Its Important to point out that like the previous writer told you , you should try something stronger than Norco before moving on to the " Big Dog's " and also that when and if you do , expect some slight withdrawal symptoms because Methadone is a synthetic opiate.
Avatar f tn Methadone absolutely has made me gain weight and I do days of total fasting, with no loss. I take methadone for cripling back pain. Will switching to opana allow me to lose the weight I've put on and help back pain, which the methadone was taking more and more with less relief?
Avatar f tn t nerve pain! So will let you know, if and when I wake up after the Fentanyl (and IF the Fentanyl) kicks in! It didn't help at all when I used it years ago, but i will try again, really, they don't give you any options, its that or....NOTHING! (at least in my case) I'll post later. Thanks for writing, I am so sorry for the cancer pain, I do know about that, and only a morphine pump seemed to help.
