Common Questions and Answers about Metformin xr pcos

glucophage

Avatar f tn According to my RE metformin (regular) should be taken around the same time everyday. If you are on Metformin XR (extended release) if really doesn't have a "time" frame. Since I don't really know your medical history, I would recomend you to speak to your doctor so that Metformin can give you the best results, and the results that you are working for.
Avatar f tn Hello, I started taking Metformin in late July for high testosterone and an A1c of 5.8. (Endocrinologist said I had PCOS). I gradually built up to the full 2000 mg XR week by week. I didn't have many side effects from the medication at all. (Despite knowing several friends and a family member who had awful gastro issues). However, recently, I experienced the metallic taste and am suffering bad gastro side effects 3 months afterwards.
Avatar f tn While I was on it I lost weight my monthly cycle was regular. Some time later my symptoms re-occurred. I began taking Metformin XR (slow release) and suffered no side effects. However, my symptoms are getting worse and the medication is not helping. I am on a low fat low carb diet and get regular exercise daily. Nothing seems to work and my weight is ever increasing. It's something I need to get on top of as there is a strong history of diabetes in my family.
1360237 tn?1351816181 s a pill like clomid with less side effects and it singles out an egg to mature unlike the clomid that tries to mature everything (hints cysts). Also keep up the Metformin it has been shown to help women with PCOS ovulate and eventually it could help you start you period without provera.
878888 tn?1319634044 08 last test, But she put me on Metformin xr 500 for diabetes. I was wondering if anyone else takes this med along with levothyroxine and if it effects your thyroid management. I have gained 16 lbs back since January and want make sure I don't keep gaining. Ps. I work on my feet and walk about 9000 steps a day, plus have changed my diet and am counting carbs.
Avatar n tn In one study conducted at Virginia Commonwealth University, 24 obese PCOS women were given metformin or placebo. The 11 women who received the metformin experienced a reduction in insulin levels, which slowed the activity of an enzyme in the ovaries that stimulates excess production of testosterone. As a result, testosterone levels also dropped.(3) Glucophage appears to do the same for non-obese PCOS women, according to a study from the University of Medical Sciences in Poznan, Poland.
Avatar f tn It's not only diet and exercise with pcos. I was diagnosed with atypical pcos and have never been overweight. I'm very active and eat healthy. Metformin has helped me have regular periods now for the last 5 months. Before taking it I was getting maybe one period a year.

Avatar f tn I also have pcos and am taking metformin er 1000mg. It sounds like your doctor has you on the right track as far as BCP and your other meds. Can I ask why you dont take your BCP? I don't take any because I am trying to conceive, but I know that they do wonders for us pcos girls. As far as your other med is it metformin? I know for me, when I started my met I didn't get a period right away, in fact I still havent. They force start my periods with provera or prometrium.
435139 tn?1255460391 t like that idea and my friend said that her doctor put her on metformin (she has pcos though) and if not pregnant in a couple months, she is going on clomid...Does Metformin help you get pregnant? Anyone who has any insight on this that is willing to share, it would be greatly appreciated!
1712386 tn?1308425981 Metformin helps regulate insulin levels so that the person can regulate their period and help with ovulation which is difficult in women with PCOS or even impossible for some without help with medicine. Metformin also helps a woman with PCOS have less of a risk for miscarriage (which is common with PCOS) especially if taken during the first trimester. Some woman cannot be helped with Metformin alone or it may not help at all. Clomid is often used with or without Metformin with women with PCOS.
623922 tn?1223406991 Losing weight (if overweight) will help you to ovulate. Your doctor probably gave you metformin because you have pcos. Like Lori said she didnt ovulate while taking this, she started ovulating when she lost around 40lbs. I too have lost about 42lbs (but im on birth control) so i cant tell you if i ovulate.
Avatar f tn Hey there. You are definitely not alone both my sister and I have PCOS. She stayed on her Metformin and was more sick. I'm twelve weeks and five days without and everything seems healthy.
431073 tn?1222177026 Metformin is a pretty common first treatment for PCOS. I've been on it for 5 months now. It made my stomach pretty upset at first, but the doctor forewarned be of that. Ever since I started taking it, for the first time in my life I have a completely normal cycles, without being on birth control! I started my first round of clomid about 2 weeks ago and we shall see here soon if we managed to make a baby or not.
Avatar f tn I was diagnosed with pcos yesterday & put on progesterone & metformin. No one in my family has pcos or any fertility issues except me so I have no idea what to expect from the meds or trying to concieve now..does anyone have pcos and can enlighten me a little???
Avatar n tn My care is currently through my Family Doctor. My last two HA1C tests were 7.2 and 7.4, and creatinine was 1.1. I am taking Metformin XR, 1 gm twice a day, total of 2 grams (four 500 mg tablets). I take 1 gram in the morning and 1 at night. My blood sugars tend to run high in the morning and decrease during the day. I have no specific instructions whether to take at meals, with water, etc. Would it likely make any difference to take 1.5 grams at night and 0.
706214 tn?1244523049 Most docs prescribe metformin bc ppl with PCOS are said to be insulin restistant. Metformin is a drug used to treat type 2 diabetes. Most chances if you have PCOS you are not ovulating, your producing eggs but they are not being ovulated so they form a string around your ovaries that look like cycts. You can look up metformin and infertility to find out more.
Avatar f tn I had success with both Metformin and birth control. Metformin is working so far alone. I've been on Metformin for now 1 year and birth control for 2 years. I stopped my birth control in August and had a normal period 8/30-8/31. I am looking forward to starting my next cycle this weekend. It's nice to see so far my cycles have normaled out.
Avatar f tn Hi I have been diagnosed with pcos and have been on metformin for just over 2 mouths and have been on clomid. Now 4 weeks pregnant I am not sure I should proceed with metformin. I have an appointment with my doctor in another week so I just want some advise. I read on Internet it could help lowering the risk of miscarriage.
648527 tn?1234150736 Hi!! I also have PCOS but was not getting a period at all. My doctor put me on Metformin in hopes of it trying to regulate me, but it did not work. Hopefully it will work for you. We also did rounds of Clomid but then found out i was clomid resistant so moved to injectables which seemed to work so far. I am in my 2ww to find out if there is a little bean or not. I wish you lots of luck!
