Avatar n tn On the report it did not show outside the normal but she said the usually accepted cut off for insulin resistance was lower than my level. I was placed on 500mg metformin, told to cut out process/refined sugar, carbs, and be re-tested. This process has continued and now I am on 2000 mg of metformin and my levels are actually higher. I have not been perfect with the diet but certainly much better than before.
Avatar f tn If you are type 2, insulin resistance is considered key part of the problem (though insulin resistance can also happening in Type 1). To address insulin resistance you can:- 1. Lose excess weight if you are overweight 2. Adopt a low carb or even a ketogenic diet (be sure to get enough protein and don't overdo the fats) 3. Regular vigorous physical exercise 4. Insulin sensitizing drug such as metformin.
Avatar n tn I think partly the metformin can help with the weight loss, and with insulin resistance it can be controlled by changing your diet, as well as losing weight. I'm no doctor, but I do think it's possible to ultimately go off the metformin once you achieve a healthy weight and learn how to eat properly to help the prevent the problem. Now that I think of it, my friend is not on metformin. She just sees a nutritionist and is on a strict diet, and exercises A LOT.
644577 tn?1224350916 I could not lose weiht before. High insulin levels makes weight loss extremely difficult. The Metformin can help to lower the insulin levels. I have both PCOS and hypothyroidism, so I know the struggle to lose weight. I actually found out about the PCOS when I couldn't lose weight once I got my thyroid levels right. It's a constant struggle, but we must keep exercising, as it protects our bones, strngthens our heart, aids in digestion, and improves insulin resistance.
6918143 tn?1386340447 Hypothyroidism is a major cause of weight gain/inability to lose, and often accompanies PCOS and insulin resistance. The tests you need are Free T3, Free T4 and TSH. You might also ask for thyroid antibody testing to determine whether you have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. I, too, have insulin resistance and I take digestive enzymes because I don't absorb a lot of nutrients; the digestive enzymes do nothing to help me lose weight. I also have Hashimoto's/hypothyroidism.
Avatar n tn I have PCOS too and I have been put on Metformin which helps with weight loss. People with PCOS have a higher insulin levels which decreases your female hormones and increases the male hormones which cause the hair growth and scattered periods. These are things that you know about but with increased insulin levels your body does not process the food correctly and tends to hold onto it which is why I gained weight! Metformin is for glucose patients and that is why it helps PCOS patients.
594189 tn?1386916607 Do you mean that when you stop the metformin, your "blood sugar", rather than insulin, levels go up? You'll have to make sure your blood sugar levels stay steady because of course we want you to be able to get "preggers" and give us a wonderful "grandchild". Metformin is a med for Type II diabetes and/or insulin resistance -- weight loss is only a "side effect" but that's desirable for many.......
1500387 tn?1460740020 This weight loss was attributed to the resolution of insulin resistance provided by Metformin. In the same study, those who continued on Metformin after one year maintained their weight loss while those who stopped Metformin regained 50% of their weight. Another study showed that women who continued on Metformin following their weight loss, maintained that loss for 2 to 4 years. Metformin can Restore Menstruation Metformin restores menstruation.
Avatar f tn Since insulin resistance is minimal or non-existent, medications designed to reduce insulin resistance such as Avandia and Actos are not effective. Other meds that stimulate the pancreas to produce insulin, slow digestion of carbs, or reduce excess glucose production by the liver are often effective in controlling the blood sugar for a few years. A misdiagnosis is easy to make when the person is older and responds well at first to treatment with oral medications.
594189 tn?1386916607 But when I was doing better, I did notice that my rate of weight loss was not constant. I lost over 10 lbs my first month, then a little less each month. I'll put away my "capt. bring down" attitude now! Again, congrats, and I hope you come back and tell us more!
1090984 tn?1463769850 I am hysterical now and the weight is really heavy in my middle section, I never gained weight there in my life. I was thinking of going on metformin, I hearf that was good for weight loss. Any ideas what could be going on??
Avatar f tn Metabolism tends to be sluggish -- but not due to the thyroid. Metformin usually induces 5-7 pound weight loss in these cases, but I have not dealt with this issue for many years so there may be more up to date data. If thyroid levels normal, looks like thyroid is ok at this point.
568322 tn?1370165440 Now we can use this study to get doctors to test people for insulin resistance and prescribe Metformin. Success rate is about to go up.....yes! TRIC-1 Study: Metformin Added to Peginterferon alfa-2a and Ribavirin Improves RVR Rate in Treatment-Naive Genotype 1 HCV Patients With Insulin Resistance.
Avatar f tn My doctor suggests now to up the Clomid dose to 150mg and to take Metformin as well. I thought that Metformin was indicated for patients with insulin resistance (which is not my case), is this true or are there potential benefits of taking Clomid + Metformin even not being insulin resistant? Also, at which point will a person be considered Clomid resistant?
878888 tn?1319634044 08 last test, But she put me on Metformin xr 500 for diabetes. I was wondering if anyone else takes this med along with levothyroxine and if it effects your thyroid management. I have gained 16 lbs back since January and want make sure I don't keep gaining. Ps. I work on my feet and walk about 9000 steps a day, plus have changed my diet and am counting carbs.
233562 tn?1282768382 Contuining to take metformin even after you conceive, helps to prevent miscarriage in the first trimester. Metformin helps lower blood sugar and treat insulin resistance in women with PCOS. I'm sorry that you have to go through this, but continue with your treatments and doctor's visits :) Metformin also helps with weightloss and ovulation :) Good luck!
2006473 tn?1422033301 I was just diagnosed yesterday with PCOS and insulin resistance. The doctor also said my Vitamin D was really low. He gave me a prescription for Metformin (I may have the wrong spelling) and a vitamin D supplement. So my question is...WHAT HAPPENS NOW? He let me know I need to work on losing weight which I am starting today but beyond that I haven't the slightest idea. All I know is I am supposed to go back and see him in four months. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Avatar m tn You will want to talk to your doctor about what type of diabetes you have. One type can be reversed through dietary changes (typically also weight loss, which probably won't be a factor if you are not overweight as you say), but you would need to stay on the insulin until then. As for the PCOS, the only way to keep more cysts from forming is to prevent ovulation, which is why you're on the birth control (in addition to hopes of shrinking the current ones).
Avatar f tn If you are middle aged and insulin resistant weight loss is hard so you might want to skip snacks and just eat three meals a day. Carbs are addictive and you may feel hungry for awhile but then you will adjust. Many people eat much lower than that.
