374593 tn?1257879950 Hello! For those of you that have taken metformin during pregnancy, at how many weeks did you discontinue it? also did you just stop it cold turkey or taper it down ( i take it twice a day now and do i just stop or take it once a day for a while?) I am 33 weeks pregnant, and have had severe morning/all day sickness the entire time, they think stopping the metformin at this point may help..
Avatar f tn In Canada, metformin is under clinical study for pregnancy. The officially approved treatment is insulin shot. I'm taking insulin but diet and exercice is more than needed to keep it under control. If your physician prescribed it He most think it is safe.
Avatar f tn I had to stop taking metformin completely as soon as I got my pregnancy confirmed. I was taking it for PCOS and insulin resistance. My dr said I'll probably start taking it after delivery and after I finished breastfeeding.
Avatar n tn Thank you all for the help. I guess I was just a little worried about putting a diabetic med in my body. Well I guess I will try and see how it goes thanks again.
1306788 tn?1334752651 But she said that has been a very recent study, which was very comprehensive which has shown that Metformin is completely safe to use throughout the whole pregnancy where needed. So that was a big relief, and now that I am in my second trimester, I am not so scared of losing the baby.
374593 tn?1257879950 I was also on it during my first pregnancy but stopped it when I was 12 weeks along. I also used it for fertility and because of previous miscarriages. I stopped cold turkey and had no side effects. I understand your concern but at 33 weeks stopping it would very likely have no effect on the baby. I really think your baby is fine at this point and you don't have much to worry about. I would listen to your OB in this case.
Avatar f tn I must say that none of us here are doctors or pharmacists, and if a patient suddnely finds herself pregnant while taking these medications she needs to speak to a profesional ASAP. We cannot tell her to stop taking her medication or not, I'm afraid. This is an emergency situation which requires an emergency visit to her doctor. Many medications, when stopped "cold turkey" can have some damaging effects as well.
Avatar f tn I was on this before (and during) my pregnancy for type 2 diabetes.

1953952 tn?1324904058 I actually had been trying to concieve for a few yrs when I read up on PCOS and no where did I read or exp. Pain during sex however everyone is different. I talked with my dr abt it and we decided to go on Metformin which is an insulin based drug used to treat dbts it helps increase ur insulin levels which are lower when u suffer from PCOS in less than a mth I was pregnant. Def. Talk with ur dr and see what's best for u and ur partner.
Avatar n tn gov/diabetes/library/features/type-1-and-pregnancy.html Metformin is generally considered safe during pregnancy.
397982 tn?1210924921 Yes, I suppose you could be and so should check a pregnancy test. Metformin is fairly safe in pregnancy, however most doctors recommend that you stop taking it unless you are a diabetic.
604185 tn?1233960857 From everything I have read, it seems that metformin is a safe medication and you can stay on it all through your pregnancy (unless you have liver issues). The other good news is that its not a new medication and has been around for over 30 years for diabetics, even though it had not been used for fertility, and the world knows what its side effects are. Good luck.

1421938 tn?1318603558 Of course there is the risk of the unknown, b/c effects of metformin on the fetus during pregnancy is not really well studied, so that may be why your doctor is hesitant. Good luck!
