Common Questions and Answers about Metformin menstrual cycle

glucophage

Avatar n tn i have yet to have a cycle and i was wondering how long does it take before my menstrual cycle start regulating.
209384 tn?1231168306 Hi, Glucose levels can change during and around the menstrual cycle due to hormonal shifts. How high are your levels going? This should determine if you need to increase the metformin and by how much. If the increase is only by a few points, you may be able to manage this with some dietary changes around that time, but if there are significant increases then speak with your doctor about changes in your meds around that time. Take care.
Avatar n tn I am on 2000mg of metformin and it took me 3 months before my menstrual cycle became regular.I have pcos which caused me to not have my menstrual for month's. But since I've been on the metformin I've been doing really good...it just take a little bit longer sometimes. I've just got done doing ivf and I'm still on metformin through my whole pregnancy. Goodluck hun!
Avatar f tn A woman with a light period is not gaining much thickness in her endometrial lining during the early part of the menstrual cycle. This is usually an indication that estrogen levels are lower than normal. If estrogen levels are low, progesterone levels are likely to also be low and a woman may or may not ovulate with her cycles.
950954 tn?1271210887 Thank you very much for the insight....I have already signed up to soulcysters.net. It another wonderful website, especially b/c I can relate to so many other women dealing with PCOS. Maybe you can answer me this silly question...If I started spotting on July 2nd...saw brown discharge the next day on July 3rd...and on July 4th...I started having a heavy flow of bleeding....Would July 2nd or 4th be considered the first day of my menstrual cycle?
1964345 tn?1355377018 I'm gonna make this short and to the point. I haven't had a menstrual cycle in 4 months. I was put on provera and metformin but no cycle. All blood test came back normal. I'm still taking metformin but I see no improvement. Why am I not getting a period??? The doctor can't find anything wrong.....
Avatar m tn After the marriage I have got an irregular menstrual cycle. I consulted a VOG and she asked me to have Metformin for a month along with Folic acid. Since I consume the Metformin , I have been having the periods with blood clots for 3 weeks continuously. I got scared and stopped the medicine. But the period is still there. What should I do?
Avatar f tn I also recently found out I have 1 small, grape-sized fibroid. Can any of this cause my menstrual cycle to be heavy and full of large clots?
Avatar f tn OK, I have irregular cycles and I also have PCOS, my ob said for my husband and I to. Start trying to conceive, my ob upped my dosage of Metformin to 2, 500mg a day and to stop taking my birth control. He said if I don't have a period within 35 days come back, well its been two days on Metformin and I have already started, but I was wondering how long do I have to take this before I can get Clomid?

Avatar f tn t work within 3 months they are putting me on metformin as well as clomid.. what does the metformin actually do?
Avatar f tn Exactly, that is the best advice and right now only advice anyone can give you. I once went 13months no cycle. Dr prescribed me with metformin and proverb to help regulate. So I really I hope you schedule an appointment soon!!!
Avatar n tn t have a regular menstrual cycle. Maybe 2 times a year. I went in on the 3rd of January to get my prescription and started my periods that day without even taking it. I don't know if I should start it while on my period or wait until it is over? I'm hoping it will make everything regular and I will conceive within a year.

Also , she gave me somed pills so i can have my menstrual cycle and after my cycle is done she gave me some birth control pills to take for 21 days ,then i'm suppose to have a cycle again thenshe wants to do the injections for 5 days. i want to know is anyone else that has pcos had to go through this sort of treatment? Also how effective are the shots? And, do they hurt or have any side effects?
415867 tn?1323365503 If metformin is prescribed for a woman with PCOS to help restore a regular, normal menstrual cycle, metformin can work within 4 to 8 weeks. In addition, the stabilized levels of insulin may affect the other hormones in a woman’s body, and reduce other symptoms of PCOS. Some women, either with diabetes or PCOS, use metformin as a tool for weight loss. If this is the case, weight loss can occur somewhere between 1 and 5 weeks after beginning a regimen of metformin.
950954 tn?1271210887 Do you think I can benefit from Clomid after being told that I had a positive ovulation cycle last month and my menstrual period has begun to show signs of normality within the last 2 months? My HSG results were also good; my tubes are apparently both fine. I've read also that taking hot showers is not good for men. My husband has always taken hot showers, oddly even in the summer, but after getting himself checked out, he was told that he is fine...and that his sperm count is just fine.

Avatar f tn I was prescribed 500mg of Metformin, but decided to lose the weight without the medication. I am however taking 1000mg of Cinnamon, which has helped curve my appetite and keep my blood sugar in check. I thought I'd note that Metformin itself does not help restore a regular menstrual cycle, but losing all of that weight and keeping your blood sugar and hormones in check helped.
193609 tn?1292180293 Then this month, jumprs back up to 48 days in the cycle!!! How long does it take for Metformin to even stuff out enough to make cycles consistant? I have lost 37 lbs (17% body weight) and I just don't know what else I can do to make my cycles more normal! SOOOO tired of the pregnancy thoughts each month! My fiance and I are not actively TTC, but each month I think that I might be because of my cycle lengths! It is SOOO frustrating! Any advice???
Avatar f tn m trying to conceive..have pcos..taking metformin 1000 mg a day. missed period 1 day over ..pregnancy test negative..should i do workout in gym?
Avatar f tn It helps regulate menstrual cycles, start ovulation, and lower the risk of miscarriage in women with PCOS. Metformin can also help in regularizing menstrual cycles and starting ovulation in about 40-45% of women with PCOS.It may be more effective when taken with Clomiphene .Do consult your gynecologist for more queries. Please keep me posted. Best regards!
Avatar m tn Depending on if you are wanting to get pregnant, the birth control regulates your menstrual cycle. The metformin controls your insulin, PCOS coincides with insulin levels, your body becomes resistent and produces excess levels. Which causes the numerous cysts on your ovaries. The sprionolactone, lowers testosterone levels, which are high in most women with the disorder. In some causing excess hair growth on the body or thinning of the scalp hair, male pattern baldness.
Avatar m tn Polycystic ovary syndrome is a hormone imbalance in which the ovulation and therefore the menstrual periods are irregular. Glucophage or Metformin is a very good treatment for some cases which seem to be related to an imbalance in insulin regulation. Sometimes it works quickly. In other cases, adding a medication such as Clomid or Femara can be helpful. These medications can regulate the cycles, increase ovulation and shorten time to conception.
Avatar f tn It was a tubal pregnancy and I have to have a shot to remove it but I did get pregnant. Metformin has helped me to ovulate and has given me a regular 30 day cycle. I am just now able to start trying again and have take Clomid 50 mg to make sure that I am ovulating. Remember that metformin is used to help control your glucose levels which in turn helps your body produce the female hormones it needs to ovulate. So it only helps you to ovulate.
Avatar f tn Endogest is used to restore normal menstrual periods which have stopped for several months and it progesterone .Metformin is used in polycystic ovarian disease for managing insulin resistance. Irregular ovulation can affect your periods. It is best to get a pelvic scan done and discuss your concerns with your gynecologist. Do keep me posted. Best luck and take care!
Avatar n tn Yes it can help regulate your menstrual cycles which in turn may help you to get pregnant if you are on a regular cycle, but it should onky be prescribed if you have pcos otherwise it can harm your body. It doesnt help you to increase your fertility levels or help you get pregnant.
