Avatar n tn According to the prescribing information, heart failure, in particular, unstable or acute congestive heart failure, increases risk of lactic acidosis with metformin.[48] A 2007 systematic review of controlled trials, however, suggested metformin is the only antidiabetic drug not associated with any measurable harm in people with heart failure, and that it may reduce mortality in comparison with other antidiabetic agents.

Avatar m tn increased sleepiness or unexplained lethargy, weakness, decreased or slowed heart rate, cold sensations, stomach pains, or FEELING LIGHT HEADED or have fainted either before or after taking Metformin she could be showing some of the symptoms of lactic acidosis. This is a dangerous syndrome and requires immediate medical attention. Contact her doctor and inform him/her of your mother's situation asap.
Avatar m tn m a 210lb male, and I was terrified of the interaction of Met with alcohol. I was warned about the possiblity of lactic acidosis, even though I was told it was extremely rare, and would only come about by heavy drinking over time, or binging something like 12 beers in a night. Nevertheless, the most drinks I had was a 6 pack of guiness over a 12 hour period at a bachelor party. I'm going to Vegas this Saturday, for a college roomate reunion of sorts.
225237 tn?1333138999 I recently started on metformin Er 500 mg at dinner. I have only taken it for for days.....I've been experiencing nausea, indigestion, frequent bowel movements. Has anyone else experienced this?? I'm so afraid of getting lactic acidosis!!!! The symptoms sound similar so how do you know which it is??!! Any help an advice would be appreciated!
Avatar n tn So wait, she said you had lactic acidosis and then tried to give you metformin? Is she trying to kill you? Metformin can cause lactic acidosis!
Avatar n tn Under certain conditions, too much metformin can cause a serious condition called lactic acidosis, a life threatening condition where oxygen levels drop to dangerous levels. Set an alarm clock, ask a family member to remind you, place it in small dish next to you where you sit at night.
Avatar n tn I also got lactic acidosis from metformin, and it almost killed me, I am type two diabetes and have had hep c for almost 30 yr I am In week twelve of the triple treatment with Incivek, and have tested und for hep c since week four. But to get back on topic, I was diagnosed with diabetes about 6 yr ago, and was able to control it with metformin, but then one day I started to get really sick, went to Dr.
434242 tn?1204173382 Some people have developed a life-threatening condition called lactic acidosis while taking metformin. Get emergency medical help if you have any of these symptoms of lactic acidosis: weakness, increasing sleepiness, slow heart rate, cold feeling, muscle pain, shortness of breath, stomach pain, feeling light-headed, and fainting. I am not saying this is whats wrong however I think you should be aware of these things listed. I would call the doctor if he gets worse.......I would call anyway!
Avatar f tn Lactic acidosis is a side effect of Metformin in unusual cases and is serious. Metformin needs to be taken with food.
225237 tn?1333138999 I'm really needing some advice. In January my doc put me on metformjn er , I took it for a month and did ok but quit taking the medicaation. The end of march she did blood work (cmp). I don't really know how to understand the blood work but I did read where my anion gap was 15 which is one the high end of normal. I'm really nervous, does that mean I have lactic acidosis??!! eventho, I haven't taken the medication since the end of January?
Avatar m tn lactic acidosis can be lethal if uncontrolled, i dont know if there is a treatment to lower it, i know there are supplements to prevent this but i dont remember exactly, you should recheck online research coq10 and liposomal glutathione might help, especially coq10 possibly the brands with better absorption (coq10 nano from solgar decreased my creatinine).also fibroguard from heptech took my creatinine from 1.2 to 0.
1455850 tn?1285347092 I have Merrf A8344G Mitochondrial Disease and have a lactic acidosis issues in blood tests. Are things like the Atkins Advantage Protein Shakes that are based on concentrated Milk Protiens harmful in that they negatively affect the Lactic Acidosis issue? This discussion is related to <a href='/posts/show/293312'>Severe Muscle Cramping</a>.
Avatar m tn no it is not but on cirrhosis patients with low liver function and especially on uncompensated cirrhosis severe lactic acidosis can develop and nausea might be lactic acidosis but it takes time to develop so 99% is not related to entecavir be sure your doctor has planned regular lactic acidosis blood tests at least the first years because lactic acidosis can reach fatal levels in the blood with time, so blood tests for this are very important i am also on cirrhosis and on etv 0.
Avatar m tn if your alt is still abnormal after 2 years entecavir is not suppressing hbvdna in the liver you should have alt below 30 i suggest a combo with nitazoxanide or tenofovir first i think sides are not related with etv and not important, fast heartbeat is nothing to worry about 99% time, as to lactic acidosis it has been seen on uncompensated cirrhosis not on nomral compensated liver function but anyway take the test, i don't know in english but something like lactate level lab tests in ital
Avatar f tn Has anyone ever experienced, or a loved one experienced cirrhosis and lactic acidosis?
225237 tn?1333138999 m really nervous about taking it due to side effects an lactic acidosis.....can any one please helpe!!! I would really appreciate this. I do have high blood pressure an take lisinopril but other than that I think I'm healthy. I have had one incident where my liver enzymes were elevated but they checked for hepatitis an it came back negative. I just want to make sure it's safe for me to take this an maybe let me know what I could experience!!!
393893 tn?1283551230 It is highly unadvisable to take metformin on an empty stomach as you can develop lactic acidosis which is very very dangerous. Please please eat.....
Avatar f tn I suggest if your taking it, switch to Insulin please. Its too late for me.
Avatar f tn You should ideally avoid alcohol completely if you are on metformin. This is because it can precipitate acidosis and increase your blood sugar levels. You can however ask your doctor about taking an occasional drink in moderation. You doctor may allow this depending on your blood sugar profiles and diabetes control. However, as I said, its best to avoid. Take care! The medical advice given should not be considered a substitute for medical care provided by a doctor who can examine you.
358971 tn?1330888975 ll find the only serious side effect is lactic acidosis and that is RARE and usually happens in elderly, diabetic people. Other side effects include nausea, diarrhea, headaches, and things of that nature. I find that I only feel SLIGHTLY nauseous if I haven't eaten in a while. PCOS is very broad, meaning that you don't have to have all the symptoms to fit into the category. For example, I have high testosterone and little tiny cysts on my ovaries. But that is IT.
Avatar f tn So earlier this month I made a post about Baraclude giving me lactic acidosis, now my docter switched me to Viread and the first couple of days I felt fine. Now a week later I feel the same lactic acidosis symptoms. I feel cold, weak.. Having muscle pains and always tired.. I also feel. constipated and I have pain in the bladder area Im hoping this will go away.. But if it doesn't what exactly can I do from here? Considering both meds are giving me these probs so early?
Avatar f tn I have symptoms of lactic acidosis but some of those are things you have with MS also! None of my Drs have ever mentioned this as a problem. But I have been on it for so long that it may be taken for granted...
1660049 tn?1326089018 Make sure your doctor monitor's your blood electrolyte levels! Metformin is a wonderful drug BUT can cause DEATH from lactic acidosis...and it is most likely to happen when your first start taking it...make sure your doctor is doing blood tests! Metformin now carries a black box warning from the FDA because of this. Also, keep hard candy with you at all times in case of hypoglycemia. Are you monitoring your blood sugar levels? Metformin is a diabetes drug that lowers blood sugar.
Avatar m tn Currently on a clinical trial (TAF vs TDF - double blinded study). Started meds 3 days ago, didn't notice any side effects until later yesterday. I can only describe it as my feet and legs feeling cold. Did some research and it's suggested lactic acidosis. Should I be concerned this early on about this? I'm not sure if it's a side effect of the drug or just the cold weather doing it right now (I also sit under an air vent all day at work). At what point should I be worried?
