Avatar n tn [49] Metformin is recommended to be temporarily discontinued before any radiographic study involving iodinated contrast agents, (such as a contrast-enhanced CT scan or angiogram), as the contrast dye may temporarily impair kidney function, indirectly leading to lactic acidosis by causing retention of metformin in the body.[50][51] Metformin can be resumed after two days, assuming kidney function is normal.
Avatar f tn I have been a diabetic since 1995, I have always taken Metformin as as of Monday my Doctor has told me that I have Chronic Kidney Disease and told to stop taking the Metformin. So how and what is my next course of action? I read on the web that I could control it by losing some weight and changing my diet. Any thoughts?
Avatar n tn I m diabetic and using metformin, but I red that are risks of kidney failure with the contrast if my kidneys are not working fine. My PD forgot that I was using metformin till I told him and told me to stop the medication for 2 weeks before the scan. If my kidney results comes with normal level of creatinine is it safe to do the contrast? Can a MRI without the contrast reveal any more than just a CT scan. I would rather pay for the MRI than CT scan with contrast.

317787 tn?1473358451 It turns out she is one of the fairly small percentage of people who develop serious kidney problems from metformin. She had to stop it completely. Over the time she used it however she was also being extremely careful with her diet and lost a LOT of weight, so her diabetes is not so out of control anymore. Now she uses a once-per-week injection of Bydureon, and her diabetes is very well-controlled. Initially she used a helper drug with it, Glipizide ER, but she no longer needs that.
6214022 tn?1379611964 It is also important whilst taking Metformin to regularly (usually once a year) to have your kidney function checked. This is done by a blood test; your doctor may request for that to be done at the same time. Hope you get sort out soon. Best wishes.

Avatar n tn I've been on Fish, Flax & Borage Oil for years. 3000 mg,morning & three thousand at night. My daughers put me on them. A eye doctor and my kidney doctor. I haven't taken them in about 7 days due to a small procedure I'm having. A nurse once told me that when I'm going to have a minor procedue or maor, stop taking 7 days before because it makes your blood thin.
Avatar f tn I am a type 2 diabetic and I concerned about fasting (religious) and taking glipizide. I have been on metformin for over 14 years and have had to recently add glucotrol to my regimen. I do not have any low blood sugar symptoms at all and I am scared of the time I have to restrain from eating. Is any one else ever dealt with this?
10443766 tn?1410724207 I was on metformin lantus and humalog then they took me off metformin and changed to levimer and humalog. My Dr made me a high risk patient so I get more visits. Its harder because I need to test more but its worth it. My Dr is also very curious on my body and my baby though because once I begay second trimester insulin made my sugars spike (600+) and ice cream, cake, candy etc would make me low (75-90) so I haven't been able to take my insulin.
Avatar m tn I am diabetic and on metformin and also crestor for cholestrol recently I had the cardiac procedure and the following medicaations were added on apo-clopidogrel 75mg, bisoprolol 5 mg 1/2 a tablet a day along with aspirin . thry tested my urine and found traces of blood. i have severe backaches. what could be the reason ?. is there anything that i coul do witout taking medication please advice . i am 70 years old.
Avatar n tn You have lots of room to go up on your metformin before heading to insulin, so discuss this with your doctor. The usual dose of metformin, assuming your kidney and heart function are fine, is 1000 mg twice daily. It may also help with your weight loss. Continue with the dietary changes to lose some weight. You definitely need medication in the evenings if your morning blood sugars are the highest, so perhaps this second dose of metformin can first be added at night to help.
Avatar f tn Update to my post: I'm no longer freaking out. This is a very good example of why you need to be in complete control of your own health! After spending the better part of a day calling the Rheumatologist, the GP, and the imaging department, here is what I learned....... On the first visit to the Rheumatologist in Aug 17, while reviewing my husband's test results, he stopped at the xray of his lungs and asked us if we saw the shadow on his lower right lobe.
