Avatar f tn I have been taking medication over the years for bipolar disorder and I have recently been diagnosed with metabolic syndrome. I have taken thyroid tests and all of them have been normal with a heightened testosterone level. What is the link between testosterone, metabolism, and insulin? Does metrofomin have a lot to do with weight loss and metabolism and thyroid issues?
Avatar f tn Hi Jemma, Coconut oil is not a transfat. It is a saturated fat. The type of fat in coconut, particularly if you use the unprocessed virgin type, is very good for cooking (it is stable and doesn't change), has antiviral and antibacterial properties, it is also delicious in baked goods. Meat and butter and not transfats. They are saturated fats.
Avatar n tn s disease last October. My question is regarding metabolic syndrome, this is what my endo diagnosed me with on Thursday. I have been a mess for a year, blameing everything on thyroid and it wasn't until I saw my endo, that maybe i'm looking at something entirely different. I have excessive weight gain and am very overweight, I have elevated blood sugar, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.

Avatar m tn I assume you mean you have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (also known as syndrome X or metabolic X syndrome by many) - if so why not go see a dietitian who deals with diabetes (just because they deal with diabetes does't mean they can't help develop a plan that will for you, even if your not diabetic) and have them help develop a plan that will work with you?
Avatar f tn I have the same thing due to PCOS which caused Metabolic Syndrome. I tried Metformin but was allergic so now they have me on Glipizide. So far my numbers have been in 100-125 after taking meds. It can drop you down low if you don't eat enough carbs in your meal so you have to be very strict on your routine when taking this med. I eat lean with a healthy balance of lean meats, carbs(fruits and healthy carbs) and tons of veggies. I also do water aerobics and just added strength training.
Avatar f tn Metformin is a drug to treat insulin resistance which can lead to diabetes. That, along with the "enlarged ovary" makes it sound like you have Polycystic Ovary Syndrome." A strand of pearls pattern of cysts on the ovaries is one of the classic symptoms of this metabolic disorder. If you are overweight, I've read that losing some weight can normalize the menstrual cycle as well as restore insulin resistance.
Avatar f tn I've had no side effects. Once in a while i'll have loose stool if i eat too many carbs. How is your dr. having you take it?

Avatar n tn The last time he did an upper body work out, just 4 push ups he got sclerosed veins(not sure that is the name) He had clotts in the veins in the arm. You could feel them also diagnosed by a doctor. He has been to metabolic, neurologic, rheumotologic, and Infectious disease specialists. Knowbody knows what is wrong. He is unable to work out or exercise due to these problems. He is fatigued all the time, and gets arm weakness when he does anything with his upper body.
Avatar n tn I have been on Metformin for two years for metabolic syndrome. My hair is nearly gone. Before I saw a hair transplant specialist, I went back to my doctor. He took me off of Metformin. YES! It definitely can cause hair loss. He says there are other drugs to consider. Don't give up! I am on minoxidil twice daily and prenatal vitamins. No drugs for blood sugar now.
Avatar n tn When I was originally placed on Metformin for PCOS and metabolic syndrome 3 yrs ago my blood sugar level was 110 with at least half of my diet consisting of chocolate and soda. So it is very frustrating that I am working so hard on this diet and still having high sugar levels. Last week I was craving chocolate so bad....so I had a hershey bar and a REAl coke...it tasted great but 3 hours later my blood sugar was around 250. I have a dr appt next week but am curios as to what they will say.
1129774 tn?1279831762 My Endocrinologist diagnosed me with insulin resistance (also called metabolic syndrome). It is a condition that effects how your body uses your insulin you produce. You body makes enough insulin but your insulin receptors don't work so, you can't properly break down glucose. It effects many systems in your body, thyroid being one of them. Here is a web site you can check out. It explains insulin resistance (metabolic syndrome) and all the problems it can cause.www.naturalchoicesforyou.
Avatar f tn For example, according to one study, which looked at 39 women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and hyperinsulinemia (excess insulin in the blood), treatment with Metformin for women with PCOS resulted in a decline of insulin as well as total and free testosterone, leading to significant improvement of clinical manifestations of Hyperandrogenism (the excessive production of androgens in women) and an improvement in menstrual cycles (3).
Avatar f tn Hi there :) I am a certified personal trainer at a very well known gym. I have a B.S. in Wellness, Health Promotion, and Injury Prevention with a minor in Exercise Science. There are a few things that are the probable cause of your weight loss difficulty, but the number one reason is this... Most likely, your caloric intake is MUCH too low! Are you familiar with BMR (basal metabolic rate) and RMR (resting metabolic rate)? If not, here is a brief explanation...
Avatar f tn The men were as likely as the women to become depressed with marital strain, but the link between negativity, depression and metabolic syndrome only applied to women, she said. The depression in women accounted for the metabolic syndrome, she said. Exactly why isn't known, but Henry speculated that women may take the negativity more to heart and ruminate about it more than men. Henry can't say specifically how much risk of metabolic syndrome is attributed to the negativity.
Avatar f tn The recent findings suggest a new link between the metabolic pathways deregulated in cancer and diabetes and their role in immune cell function. The results suggest that common diabetic therapies which alter cellular metabolism may enhance T-cell memory, providing a boost to the immune system. This could lead to novel strategies for vaccine and anti-cancer therapies.

Avatar f tn When you switch back to your old ways your body retaliates. After losing 65lbs as a kid, I went to the extreme getting the last 10 lbs in high school. In college I started eating three regular meals a day thinking that it would be fine having joined the college swim team...Not. I steadily gained weight! Then all of a sudden I experienced gastric distress that lasted months. Doctors dismissed everything to stress.
Avatar m tn I am 25 years, I started menstruating at the age of 15 and since then, I see my period 5 to 7 times in a year. And this particular year, It came twice and we are in June already its looking like I will see t 4 times this year. I never had sex so its not pregnancy. So.... could this be because I m yet to have sex or is it a kind of sickness or I am almost at menopause?
Avatar f tn - your doc can put you on metformin. This helps regulate some of your hormones. It is also used for diabetics but you do not have to be a diabetic for this to work. This is what my doc currently has me on. - your doc can put you on clomid which will help you obviate. - your doc can put you on both metformin and Clomid. Before your doc does either med he or she will run some blood work tests and do an ultrasound. Good luck! !
