193609 tn?1292180293 ve also read quite a few articles that say some doctors prescribe metformin for PCOS and that helps them lose weight. Metformin is a drug typically used for type II diabetes, but apparently works well for PCOS as well. I also know a couple of people who are on it for diabetes or pre-diabetes and they've lost a lot of weight also. Might be worth checking into. At any rate - continue to eat healthy and exercise - you will need that no matter what med you might get.
Avatar f tn Metformin does NOT help or cause weight loss - for some it can be a side effect of the medicine but in general it is not what the drug does or helps with in and of itself. Metformin works by suppressing glucose production by the liver.
Avatar f tn Since I now longer take Metformin I am having trouble losing the last 20 lbs I need to lose. Is there a connection between weight loss and taking Metformin. Has anyone else experienced this?
Avatar f tn Wow...I am not sure I am ready for insulin, or for that matter Metformin. I do not want to take Metformin and become ill, especially since I still work full time. But in a few years - I may try all of these. My weight seems to have leveled off. Not losing any more weight, I uped my carb intake, was practically eating no carbs. I will wait to see what my nex A1c is ... Thaks so much for your input ... I have never heard of LADA type diabetes.
2091411 tn?1332847723 First, your father may not be telling you everything in its entirety, call his doctor to get first hand knowledge on Metformin dosage and duration. You might include asking the doctor to re-evaluate your father. Second, these are basic testing times. His doctor may or may not have adjustments to them.
944631 tn?1246280052 Metformin is a glucose lowering drug, phentermine is for weight loss and dicyclomine is for irritable bowel. You need to ask this doctor if he has run a glucose test on you and if he has determined that you are diabetic. I am a diabetic and I take metformin...if you are NOT a diabetic, ask the doctor why he has put you on metformin!! Metformin will lower your blood sugar and you need to be informed about possible hypoglycemic events...call your doctor now! Please let us know what he says...
Avatar f tn I am going to start my cycle of clomid again now with my next period and praying for Gods blessing in our lives. I think the biggest issue is weight loss which kicks in ovulation and that is what I am struggling with. I dont drink my metformin regularly but now am on a daily basis. Just keep praying. You give yourself 6months of trying on clomid before you decide to take the next step. Besided a child is ultimately a gift from God so ask God first and everything else will fall in place.
Avatar n tn I have PCOS too and I have been put on Metformin which helps with weight loss. People with PCOS have a higher insulin levels which decreases your female hormones and increases the male hormones which cause the hair growth and scattered periods. These are things that you know about but with increased insulin levels your body does not process the food correctly and tends to hold onto it which is why I gained weight! Metformin is for glucose patients and that is why it helps PCOS patients.
Avatar f tn I have read that the metformin has great results for helping with weight loss because it helps with the insulin resistance. I hope it is working for you!
Avatar f tn Can a person who is not a diabetic take metformin for weight loss.. I need to loose 60lbs i have tried other prescription's diet pill's and i'am immune to them they work for awhile then nothing.
Avatar n tn However, I am not experiencing any weight loss, but I am experiencing hair loss. Every morning I brush out lots of hair and the texture of my hair has changed. I have stopped shampooing every day and just water rinse my hair every other day, but the hair loss continues. Has anyone had hair loss while on Metformin? Is there a connection between Metformin and hair loss?
Avatar n tn As with ANY treatment, it is effective for most people but not everyone. Also, some people do have weight loss as Metformin helps their body use insulin. Again, it varies from person to person.
Avatar f tn HELLO, I HAVE BEEN TAKING METFORMIN FOR YEARS NOW, BUT FOR DIABETES NOT WEIGHT LOSS. I HAD NO IDEA IT WAS ALSO USED FOR WEIGHT CONTROL.FOR ME IT IS TO HELP MY BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS. IT HAS HAD NO EFFECT AT ALL ON MY PERIOD.
Avatar f tn Hello, My mom just turned 50 this year. She was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes two years ago and was 168 pounds at 5"5'. Her doctor put her on Metformin, and she is supposed to be on it for life. Her doctor told her that she would lose weight on it, and the lowest she's been so far is 143 pounds when she weighed herself within the past couple of days. She was at the doctor in December because she had laryngitis and she was weighed at 150 and he was glad about the weight loss.
594189 tn?1386916607 Do you mean that when you stop the metformin, your "blood sugar", rather than insulin, levels go up? You'll have to make sure your blood sugar levels stay steady because of course we want you to be able to get "preggers" and give us a wonderful "grandchild". Metformin is a med for Type II diabetes and/or insulin resistance -- weight loss is only a "side effect" but that's desirable for many.......
Avatar f tn Hello I'm new to this forum. I was diagnosed with PCOS several years ago. I began gaining weight when I began my menstual cycle when I was 8 years old. I gained 70 pounds within 5 months and by the time I was 12 years old I was at 260 pounds. I am now 27 years old and at 368 pounds. I have tried everything to lose weight. I've been on Metformin for over 3 years now, eat a 1500 calorie, low carb diet, exercies, and nothing.
Avatar f tn An endocrinologist will definitely be able to help you with this. Excessive weight worsens the symptoms of PCOS. Hence weight loss by whatever means is a must. Weight loss is best achieved by dietary modification in consultation with a dietician and regular exercise. As you are already going to the gym, an appointment with a dietician can be done. Hope this helps.
Avatar f tn Can you tell me about its side effects? Recently I went for a checkup and my doctor gave me Metformin for weight loss (It suddently went up to 99 kg though I was at 85 before and was following a strict diet plan). I don't have diabetes and I haven't been diagnosed with PCOS, and I think Metformin is generally used for these two issues. So I'm concened whether I should really be Metformin. Can it mess up my insulin system?
Avatar f tn Low carb diet is the best diet for women with pcos. especially if your taking Metformin. most people think that when you eat low carb all you eat is bacon. You eat lots of veggies...acceptable fruits, meats. there is lots of stuff to eat! I just lost 10 lbs....started diet and metformin March 1st I have done atkins before. I gained 10 lbs back over 7 years but that's when I went off the diet!
Avatar n tn However it does have other benefits for women with PCOS, including improving the likelihood of spontaneous ovulation, or making women who need clomid to help them ovulate more sensitive to clomid. Are your periods regular? What are your goals - weight loss? Pregnancy? If weight loss, a nutritionist might be helpful.
Avatar f tn 906 microIU/mL Weight is now down to 82 kgs with Meds, Diet (No sugar, No white rice, No junk food) and light walking. Doc has increased Metformin dosage to 850 x 2 + 500 mg. Please suggest whether I am on the correct track and if there is something I can do. Also what is the future? Am I a diabetic? Appreciate your feedback.
