Avatar n tn I have PCOS too and I have been put on Metformin which helps with weight loss. People with PCOS have a higher insulin levels which decreases your female hormones and increases the male hormones which cause the hair growth and scattered periods. These are things that you know about but with increased insulin levels your body does not process the food correctly and tends to hold onto it which is why I gained weight! Metformin is for glucose patients and that is why it helps PCOS patients.
Avatar n tn As with ANY treatment, it is effective for most people but not everyone. Also, some people do have weight loss as Metformin helps their body use insulin. Again, it varies from person to person.
415867 tn?1323365503 Some women, either with diabetes or PCOS, use metformin as a tool for weight loss. If this is the case, weight loss can occur somewhere between 1 and 5 weeks after beginning a regimen of metformin. Some studies suggest that metformin may also be useful in weight loss for women who are not diabetic or have PCOS, but more research is needed on this point.
Avatar n tn However it does have other benefits for women with PCOS, including improving the likelihood of spontaneous ovulation, or making women who need clomid to help them ovulate more sensitive to clomid. Are your periods regular? What are your goals - weight loss? Pregnancy? If weight loss, a nutritionist might be helpful.
706214 tn?1244523049 If you are overweight even moderate weight loss and exercise will improve the symptoms of PCOS . because weigth gain makes the hormonal imbalance worse. although i hate medicines and their side effects metformin may help with weight loss aswell .
Avatar f tn Low carb diet is the best diet for women with pcos. especially if your taking Metformin. most people think that when you eat low carb all you eat is bacon. You eat lots of veggies...acceptable fruits, meats. there is lots of stuff to eat! I just lost 10 lbs....started diet and metformin March 1st I have done atkins before. I gained 10 lbs back over 7 years but that's when I went off the diet!
594189 tn?1386916607 Thank you so much for posting that. I know there are a lot of excellent "diets" out there; often people start on them and DO lose weight. The problem is that the diets are not "realistic", therefore, most people can't stick with them over the long haul, so they gain back the weight they lost, often adding even more than they started with.
Avatar f tn Hello I'm new to this forum. I was diagnosed with PCOS several years ago. I began gaining weight when I began my menstual cycle when I was 8 years old. I gained 70 pounds within 5 months and by the time I was 12 years old I was at 260 pounds. I am now 27 years old and at 368 pounds. I have tried everything to lose weight. I've been on Metformin for over 3 years now, eat a 1500 calorie, low carb diet, exercies, and nothing.
Avatar f tn An endocrinologist will definitely be able to help you with this. Excessive weight worsens the symptoms of PCOS. Hence weight loss by whatever means is a must. Weight loss is best achieved by dietary modification in consultation with a dietician and regular exercise. As you are already going to the gym, an appointment with a dietician can be done. Hope this helps.
Avatar f tn ok, some of you may know i have pcos, drs say that if i keep going with the weight loss their is a good chance i will concieve, but because DH and i have been tryin for a few years now, i am getting the scared feelin that its never going to happen, so what i was wonderin, did any of you moms, or pregnant moms suffer from pcos and get pregnant?
Avatar f tn t say for sure that losing the weight will make you respond better to the meds, but losing weight with PCOS is a good thing since most doctors believe that fertility will be increased with weight loss. I lost weight and got pregnant after taking metformin sporadically (side effects were awful). I wasn't even trying to get pregnant then. Unfortunately, that pregnancy resulted in a miscarriage.
Avatar f tn I've been diagnosed with PCOS and have been on Metformin for a month now and just had my first period in five months, so it definitely works. No weight loss though. Had a bit of a reaction when I first started it, but once my body settled into it, it was fine.
Avatar f tn Hi, it depends on the treatment I guess, but I don't think you should expect any weight gain. Metformin will help with weight loss - I don't have any weight to shed, but Met really helps with appetite and maintainance. I also find Yasmin (BCP) harmless in this respect: I gain weight very easily usually and struggle to maintain it off, but Yasmin never caused any problems in this respect, I'd say on the contrary.
Avatar f tn HELLO, I HAVE BEEN TAKING METFORMIN FOR YEARS NOW, BUT FOR DIABETES NOT WEIGHT LOSS. I HAD NO IDEA IT WAS ALSO USED FOR WEIGHT CONTROL.FOR ME IT IS TO HELP MY BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS. IT HAS HAD NO EFFECT AT ALL ON MY PERIOD.
Avatar f tn I have been diagnosed with PCOS for 10 years and have had 2 docs tell me that it will be harder to get weight off. It's such a lovely disorder to have, right?! I do take 2000mg of metformin a day , which is supposed to help weight come of more easily and also help regulate periods. I had a miscarriage in Oct and have yet to have a regular cycle...guess each person is different in how the meds effect them.
644577 tn?1224350916 Ive been on metformin for 2 1/2 weeks and havent seen any weight come. Im kinda disappointed cause ive struggle with my weight since i was younger and they made is seem like the met was gonna help me right away. i dont know maybe i need a higher dose or something!
Avatar f tn I am 25 years old and have been on Metformin since I was 17 for treatment of PCOS. The side effects when you first take the medication isn't to pleasant. At least wasn't for me. I was sick a lot with diarrhea and nausea. But this will go away after about two weeks on the medication. I too got told to loose a few pounds and I would probably get pregnant rather easily. I weighed almost 400 pounds at the start of seeing this doctor. I now weight 328.8 with her encouragement and dieting.
3634255 tn?1347759104 Im on meds but my doc hasnt placed me on metformin. Im still losing the weight I have made a lifestyle change for about two months now. I feel defeated some days but we have to get weight down if the doc wants millions of labs I give it to him. I had an ultrasound on my cervix and will have a biopsy on it next week. I want a baby too, and I know I need to make a lifestyle change I dont know if I tell you to loose 30-50 pounds then you would get pregnant.
Avatar f tn Can you tell me about its side effects? Recently I went for a checkup and my doctor gave me Metformin for weight loss (It suddently went up to 99 kg though I was at 85 before and was following a strict diet plan). I don't have diabetes and I haven't been diagnosed with PCOS, and I think Metformin is generally used for these two issues. So I'm concened whether I should really be Metformin. Can it mess up my insulin system?
Avatar m tn Is there any way medication which people with pcos can take to help them with weight loss? What i have read suggests that the only way to control it is through diet and exercise. I'm asking because my friend who has recently been told that it is likely she may have PCOS goes running for an hour a day and never eats heavily but still manages to put on weight easily. e.g last week she put on over a stone despite exercising and eating well everyday.
209384 tn?1231168306 Hi, You ovaries do not cause this problem, they are just innocent victims in all of this. I also have hypothryoid, PCOS, and now borderline diabetes. Weight loss, exercise and diet are very helpful for PCOS. So don't give up on those. As mentioned by Tiger Metformin may also be beneficial.
Avatar f tn i saw my gyno and he said i have pcos. he prescibed me metformin 850, ive been taking half a tablet for 10days every time with dinner. the next 10 days i take half a tablet in morning and half at dinner with food. im overweight so i hope il lose weight with metformin and wanting to fall pregnant. but i ve always had irregualr periods and im 25. Will i fall preganant and how long will it take me, is metformin enough or do i need clomid. im so confused i just want to fall pregnant..
Avatar f tn I was diagnosed with PCOS about 2 years ago, and was put on BC and Metformin. I never took the metformin but started to lose weight on my own. I am considered obese. I weighed 242 and am now at 231 at 5'4" not much, I know. That little bit of weight loss kick started my cycle. It was lasting every 42-46 days. 3 weeks ago I was due for my cycle and started spotting. Very little brown/pinkish mainly when I took a bm. Is has slowly gotten a bit heavier. But still just spotting.
Avatar m tn Hi, Drugs for weight loss cannot be taken for an unlimited period of time and need to be taken under medical supervision. Depending on your hormonal levels, the metforim should help with the PCOS. Weight loss can be achieved by a combination of dietary control and exercise. Hope this helps.
467721 tn?1208469005 d encourage you to continue to follow up with your doc. If a woman with PCOS is not able to ovulate with weight loss and Metformin in order to conceive, Clomid (with or without Metformin) can be used to induce ovulation. Again, I'd encourage you to follow up with your doctor regarding these matters. Best regards, Dr.
2006473 tn?1422033301 s hard on your tummy for a while till your body gets used to it. Weight loss is suggested and my acupuncturist also says to minimize sugar intake. He probably wants to see you to see how you are doing with the weight loss and meds. Are you trying to get pregnant? Pregnancy is possible with pcos but it's a little more challenging because you keep making cysts on your ovaries. All you can really do is manage it the best you can, it's not something that goes away.
Avatar n tn I am on Metformin also.....I took it last year and couldnt get past the #2 issue, It went for a month! UGH but this time I am starting at 500mg for 10 days....so far just a little #2 issue. I can surely deal with it this time! I am doing a low carb diet (atkins) because It has worked for me in the past! I have been on it for 4 days now(same is the met so far) and I have to say it has not been bad...I have not seen any weight loss yet but I have been to tired to workout!
