Most people start with just the Clomid pill and try this for about 3 to 6 total cycles before moving on to IVF. I suggest seeing a fertility specialist called a Reproductive Endocriniology and Infertility specialist if you have not done so already.
Avatar f tn Hello, Most women with PCOS don't ovulate and thus cannot become pregnant. So the first treatment option for infertility is usually the administration of drugs to induce ovulation like Clomid. Secondly Glucophage or Metformin is an insulin-sensitizing agent that is sometimes used in conjunction with Clomid. Other than that, Injectable HCG, Hmg, FSH, GnRH and assisted reproduction like IUI, IVF, GIFT AND ICSI may also be used.
Avatar f tn Metformin helps regulate insulin levels and therefore correct the hormone imbalance that might be causing the weight gain and infertility. I am not sure Metformin will help you lose weight unless you are exercising and watching your diet, but regulating your insulin will help get your body on track to losing weight more effectively.
Avatar f tn Hi! It depends on your age how soon I would begin to worry. If you are over 30, I would begin a work up after 6 months. If you are under 30, I don't tend to get to worried for about 12 months. After 12 months, the first thing I would recommend to my own patients to check is whether the woman is ovulating regularly--this can be done by charting periods and using ovulation predictors. Avatar f tn GRACE0783, the first goal of treating infertility associated with PCOS is just to ovulate. this is best achieved by metformin, 2000 mg per day, and clomid, given for five days per month at the lowest dose which will induce ovulation. once you know you are ovulating, you should stay at the same dose of clomid until you conceive. if you go above the minimum dose of clomid needed for ovulation, fertility actually can decline, and rate of miscarriage can increase.
1360237 tn?1351816181 and metformin for the last 7 months. I have been on clomid for two months now and of course I still havent ovulated. I am hoping my dr will up my dosage. Thanks for the help.
707544 tn?1228949819 No Metformin is not for high prolactin level but for impaird glucose tolerance or hyperinsulinemia. You probably had your pituitary gland imaged with an MRI. Dostinex would help your hyperprolactinemia but would not necesarrily help you ovulate. You may have to take ovulation induction drugs like Clomiphene or injectable FSH like Bravelle to make an egg to ovulate. I presume that you are seeing a specialist in fertility called a Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility specialist.
Avatar f tn I have pcos. In going to start taking metformin which I was told has helped many women conceive. Periods have been regular but got onto birth control, the pill, to keep it regulating. Will I be successful in conceiving our child/ren with metformin and after I get off birth control?
Avatar f tn HI, Women with PCOS can have problems with ovulation and conception. Weight loss if overweight and insulin sensitizing agents like metformin will help with the PCOS. For induction of ovulation, drugs like clomiphene and femara can be used. If these do not help then gonadotropins can be used. Consult an infertility expert for an opinion. The answer is based on information provided. Exact advice is not possible without a proper examination and investigations.
Avatar m tn If you were my patient, I would probably consider something such as Clomid and Metformin in combination to improve ovulation and shorten the time to conception. Good luck!
Avatar f tn The addition of dexamethasone, to a clomiphene regimen may increase the likelihood of ovulation by suppression of ACTH and any circulating adrenal androgens. For women who are unresponsive to clomiphene, the oral hypoglycemic agents like metformin could be of little help, or pioglitazone, may bring resumption of regular cycles and ovulation. These agents reduce the hyperinsulinemia and hyperandrogenemia in PCOS. These are actually medically prescribed medicines for PCOS.
415867 tn?1323365503 Once the insulin levels are under control, many women will then experience improved ovulation. If metformin is going to work for a woman who has experienced fertility problems because of her polycystic ovarian syndrome, it will typically help within three to six months. Unlike most fertility treatments, metformin does not cause a risk of having a multiple or twin pregnancy.

Avatar f tn hi im 21 and i was told when i was 18 that i have pcos and it will be almost impossible for me to get pregnant i have been on clomid and it did not work.. now im on metformin.. has anyone with pcos ever had success with metformin and getting pregnant?
Avatar f tn form of infertility. It is necessary for ovulation to occur in order for women to have regular cycles, so typically, no period means no ovulation. No ovulation, no pregnancy. I say this is a "mild" form of infertility, because it is often easily treated. For many women, simply losing weight will improve their cycles and fertility. For others, it may be necessary to use some fertility medications such as Clomid/Femara and/or Metformin.
1582478 tn?1296591223 It doesnt always work for everyone with PCOS but it does work for alot of women. It didnt work for me. I was taking metformin 500mg 3 times a day. I was also taking provera to help me get a period so I know when my new cycle starts. And than my dr had me on clomid. I started out on 50mg than 100mg than 150mg. It didnt get me ovulating and my dr would only keep me on it no more than 6 months so I finally went to see a fertility specialist and he knew what he was doing.
327405 tn?1223239755 Why would we ovulate late? Isn't the clomid supposed to induce ovulation? This really should be an exact science!!! Ha! We've been TTC for 5 years! They just figured out last April that I have PCOS and put me on Metformin. Then last week realized that I wasn't ovulating after 9 months of me telling them that I wasn't ovulating... I think they finally got sick of me calling the office and harassing the staff! I can be a persistent little bugger!

256553 tn?1258883918 If you go to any website on infertility or pcos it will discuss the use of Metformin. I have been on Metformin for pcos and have been on it for one year. It has corrected my FSH & LH levels and helped me to lose 25 lbs without hardly trying. The Metformin sensitizes the cells to insulin therefore lowering the body's production of insulin, which also then reduces androgen production. Once this happens, ovulation often resumes. I beleive that this is particular with pcos conditions.
Avatar f tn I have a few questions, I have been diagnosed with PCOS, and my husband and I are trying for our first child, I started taking Clomid 50mg and had no ovulation, so my doctor gave me a off brand of Provera to induce my period since I don't get them regularly, took that for 7 days, and two days later I started my period, now I'm taking 100 mg Clomid and started taking that on day 5 of my period which I should only have a couple more days left before stopping my period, my question is, when
