Avatar f tn The medications you listed are appropriate for those with coronary artery disease, and should have little interaction with each other. Some of these medications should be uptitrated by his cardiologist to allow for the maximum dose as he tolerates them (namely, Ramipril and Metoprolol). His Plavix should continue for either several months up to 1-2 years depending on the type of stent he received at the time of his percutaneous coronary intervention (bare metal stent vs. drug-eluting).
Avatar f tn [6] Additionally, there are numerous reports using metformin for the treatment of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), without evidence of fetal harm.[7-9] Although metformin does cross the placenta, a partial placental barrier likely exists, as maternal and fetal concentrations are different.[5,6,10] Several studies have reported an increased risk of spontaneous abortion in women with PCOS, perhaps 20% to 40% higher than in the general obstetric population.
Avatar n tn I have always, as far as I can remember, had high sugar level results when having my blood tested for annual check-ups. However nothing was ever done about recommendations or advice from the various doctors over the years. Recently after a yearly physical a doctor started me on metformin which made me physically very drained, not tired or weak, but very loose, if that is the right word, and sort of wiped out in a physical sense. The prescription dose was 500 mg.

Avatar n tn I am keeping a diary for my doctor and he may prescribe Metformin. I know I can go to Diabetes classes for info but was wondering if one can eat more normally by taking Metformin? And it seemed to spike when I had a cold but the cold is gone, but not the high blood sugar readings. Anyone else affected by illness?

480448 tn?1426948538 Thanks so much for the input! Great points! And you're right, unlike Type I most times, prevention is the key for Type II Diabetes. I think it would be helpful for us to maybe start a thread dedicated to discussing diet, nutrition. We could even post recipes that people have found to be yummy!

Avatar m tn About 5 months ago, the doctor said that my mom was at risk of being diabetic and diagnosed her with pre-diabetes and prescribed her to take a 500 mg tablet of Metformin every day. After another checkup one month ago, the doctor said her glucose levels were normal again, and she was to stop taking Metformin. Starting one week ago, fearing that her glucose levels might rise too high with all the holiday food, my mom unwisely decided to take a 500 mg tablet of Metformin every day again.

Avatar m tn I was diagnosed with diabetes 2 weeks ago. The Dr. prescribed metformin. I asked for a referral to an endocrinologist since I have an autoimmune disease (Stiff person syndrome + not overweight, normal blood pressure and choloesterol is normal). They said they would refer me to an endocrinologist. 6 days later hadn't heard anythoing from an endocrinoligst so called the Dr.'s office and they resent the referal. Week later still haven't heard anything from an endocrinologist.

645800 tn?1466860955 This is really a post for a friend of mine. He has had Type II diabetes for years but is finding very hard to control as his Metformin AS 500mg makes him sick every day.He takes it in the morning just before breakfast and is nauseous the rest for the day. As such he skips taking it most of the time with his glucose in the 300's and even when he does take it his glucose is in the high 200's. He is wondering if any other diabetics have had this problem with the metformin?
1574695 tn?1322590597 What are you taking metformin for? Do you have diabetes? Do you have PCOS? Is the doctor would said to stop taking it the same one who prescribed it? I did a little research and metformin is Pregnancy Category B. It is generally considered safe for pregnant women. http://diabetes.emedtv.com/metformin/metformin-and-pregnancy.html The article linked above states that metofrmin is generally continued throughout the pregnancy if you are taking it for PCOS.
Avatar f tn m having with my treatment. I have been diagnosed with PCOS for more then 5 years now. Originally I started on the regular Metformin but due to gastritis could not continue. While I was on it I lost weight my monthly cycle was regular. Some time later my symptoms re-occurred. I began taking Metformin XR (slow release) and suffered no side effects. However, my symptoms are getting worse and the medication is not helping. I am on a low fat low carb diet and get regular exercise daily.
Avatar n tn The A1c test is a measure of control, not a diagnostic test, so it is very possible that the Metformin is controlling your blood sugar and that is why your A1c is good. Metformin is also used as a preventative for people with pre-diabetes. You could discuss lowering your dose with a doctor. Metformin is an insulin sensitizer and doesn't work on the food you eat like some other oral medications.
