Avatar f tn This question is not exactly about Diabetes, but because metformin HCL is used in Diabetes treatment, I would like to know of any of you has experience with this medicine. Can you tell me about its side effects? Recently I went for a checkup and my doctor gave me Metformin for weight loss (It suddently went up to 99 kg though I was at 85 before and was following a strict diet plan).

Avatar f tn According to the MedHelp drug page on metformin, alcohol lowers blood sugar and may increase the risk of lactic acidosis while you are taking this medicine. Here's the link: http://www.medhelp.org/drugs/metformin/show/4596 You'll see this under interactions.
1512722 tn?1313697879 Metformin is the most amazing drug, it's the reason I'm pregnant. It helped me lose 20lbs and ovulate!! I ovulated on femara but didn't get pregnant thus month I took only my 1500mg of metformin. I've been on metformin since October at 1500mg and never missed a pill. If you stick to it and exercise it could get you pregnant. I just did yoga/pilates I heard it was good for fertility and only started it this cycle and got pregnant. Good luck to you!!
1712386 tn?1308425981 Metformin is a drug used to control type 2 diabetes and gestational diabetes. So maybe I am little confused but was this supposed to assist you in becoming pregnant. I am only asking because I have taken that drug during my first pregnancy and I am continuing to take it through this one.
788199 tn?1236611657 my doc told me and i researched it. metformin does not only control ur insulin levels it is also a fertility med but even though it helps with fertility ur doc may give an additional fertility drug if u have had no succcess getting pregnant with metformin. u shud also keep in mind that blood test is way more fool proof than a urine test so if AF hasn't *** already a doc visit may be in store. good luck!! u can drop me a message if u have any questions, i will try to help.
435139 tn?1255460391 Metformin is a diabetic drug that has been found to help women with PCOS regulate their hormones, therefore help them acheive pregnancy. Crazy hormones in a PCOSer cause cysts on the ovaries and can cause them to not ovulate. Metformin regulates those things so that MOST women begin to ovulate again. Metformin is not the answer for you. Depending on what you're going through, Clomid is probably the best option. Just research it and discuss it again with your doc.
Avatar f tn Research led by the University of Leeds has found drugs such as anti-diabetic drug Metformin and AICAR, used to combat obesity, can prevent the hepatitis C virus from replicating in the body.
Avatar m tn I have been on Synthyroid since may but now I was recently prescribe Metformin. I forgot to ask if it safe to take Metformin with Synthyroid at the same time. Does anyone if it would be ok?
878888 tn?1319634044 08 last test, But she put me on Metformin xr 500 for diabetes. I was wondering if anyone else takes this med along with levothyroxine and if it effects your thyroid management. I have gained 16 lbs back since January and want make sure I don't keep gaining. Ps. I work on my feet and walk about 9000 steps a day, plus have changed my diet and am counting carbs.
Avatar f tn I'm 33 and I also have PCOS. Don't be afraid of not having kids. It can still happen. A lot of women with PCOS do have kids but I'm not gonna lie, it's tougher for some of us. :) There are other treatments available besides Metformin. Just to let you know, Metformin is a diabetic drug. It helps control blood sugar. Yes, it can help, but it's not really an ovulation drug. Clomid is the ovulation drug that is used for a lot of people to help ovulation occur.
Avatar m tn Glycomet is the generic term for Metformin (Glucophage). I just picked up my Metformin RX yesterday. It comes with a pharmaceutical paper that explains in detail everything one needs to know about the drug. This is what the attached pharmaceutical paper had to say about pregnancies: "Teratogenic Effects: Pregnancy Category 8 Most experts recommend that insulin be used during pregnancy to maintain blood glucose levels as close to normal as possible.
Avatar f tn The partner only needs a semen analysis when using clomid. And I highly doubt they would give it to a 17 year old. Metformin like I said, is for insulin resistance. not every woman with pcos is insulin resistant. I have pcos, and I didn't need metformin to get pregnant. I did have to use clomid though. Being that metformin is considered a diabetic drug, if she needed it, I don't think they'd deny her, but I'm not certain.
1179632 tn?1263935878 I came off the birth control in August 2009, and since then I keep having my cycle everything month around 28-32 days. Metformin is the only known drug of choice that doctors most prescribe for the symptoms of pcos. Also, when you do get pregnant metformin helps to reduce the risks of miscarriages in those with pcos. Normally it is taken up to the 20th week of pregnancy. Good luck, and continue metformin. I never had any bad side affects with it...
Avatar n tn [48] A 2007 systematic review of controlled trials, however, suggested metformin is the only antidiabetic drug not associated with any measurable harm in people with heart failure, and that it may reduce mortality in comparison with other antidiabetic agents.
484844 tn?1253968693 I never took this drug, but I can say Provera never helped me with my bleeding too. Your right, this drug is used to help treat certain types of cancers and is also given to those with unexplained vaginal bleeding. If you are concerned about the side affects to this drug (but like this drug and 1,000's more, they will always contain side affects) you should speak to your doctor on other options. What are your symptoms? How long have you been bleeding?
Avatar f tn 5mg dose of Olanzapine daily, and along with it has advised me to take 500mg of Metformin three times daily. I was only taking the Metformin twice daily, but because I have gained a few pounds, my doctor thought it I should take more. I'm not sure if it's just a coincidence that since taking three I have had a persistent headache, have been generally sick to my stomach, and just not feeling well.
1300526 tn?1275771621 I am on metformin, 500mg x 4 a day. Some say take two, twice a day and some people on my diabetic team say take one per meal. what is the best way to take it? My prescription is saying right now, take two twice a day, and I am confused,,,,how does metformin actually work with meals or bloodsugar management during a day? Thanks in advanced for any help on this.
446049 tn?1649005835 Interesting. Since you are on a generic, what about trying a different one (maybe even the one you were on before)? If that does't work, there are metformin alternatives. Unfortunately, there are those that don't tolerate Metformin. But the effect of the drug is necessary so finding an alternative is so important. https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/323128 This article goes into some alternatives. There ARE options!
