Common Questions and Answers about Metformin diet

glucophage

Avatar f tn Metformin is a medicine that is commonly used to treat people with type 2 diabetes. It makes the body's cells more sensitive to insulin. This may result in a decrease in the blood level of insulin which may help to counteract the underlying cause of PCOS - see above. Other newer insulin-sensitising medicines include pioglitazone. This is not currently recommended for PCOS. For certain people with PCOS, a specialist may advise that metformin be taken.
1720613 tn?1309432604 People starting off at 250 mg [half a tablet] of Metformin have a very good chances of eliminating the drug from their lifestyle. That is your dose, right? A half a tablet also means 425 mg or 500 mg. At this level it is a little more difficult to reverse the condition. You left out the part of maintaining proper body weight. Along with sticking to a diabetic diet/nutrition plan, and daily physical exercise being overweight contributes greatly to diabetes.
Avatar n tn Yes. Metformin helps you to lose weight. BUT....you need to stay on a diet to help this out. I too take metformin 500mg 2x a day and Yasmin. Been on both since 9/14/08, and have lost close to 60lbs. Try staying away from all sugary snacks and drinks. No soda, stick with water and ice tea (no sugar) or seltzer with lemon or lime. Eat lots of fruits and veggies during the day. I stick to 5 meals a day, 2 snacks and 3 meals (sometimes its 3 snacks).

Avatar f tn Having lost the weight I can now manage my diabetes with my diet. Since I now longer take Metformin I am having trouble losing the last 20 lbs I need to lose. Is there a connection between weight loss and taking Metformin. Has anyone else experienced this?
7267830 tn?1391994730 I used to work with PCOS patients all the time for the past 7 years and one of the things that would always help them conceive was a proper diet, prescribed medication (in most cases you might get prescribed a medication called Metformin) if Metformin, diet and exercise doesn't seem to help you might get prescribed Clomid for inducing ovulation.
Avatar m tn Thanks for answering, Just to clarify, I take high sugar foods OR I take metformin. Not both at the same time. I think metformin mostly helps with insulin resistance (and it doesnt lower the sugars since they are already normal). My sugars are OK even when I am not taking metformin. They get high from 5.5 to 8 when I eat, but they drop back to 6 or 5, 2 hours after eating. The sugar levels during the shaking and weakness episodes are 4.5 to 5.
Avatar n tn Symptoms do not last that long while on Metformin. Were you on a diet while taking it? It is known if you eat high fat content of foods it will make the side effects worst. Other then metformin, I'm not sure what else there is. Did you ease into taking it? I took 500mg 1x a day for 4 months, then I was upped to 2x a day ever since. Might want to give it another chance.
Avatar n tn AND... follow a lower carb diet. Carbs can make you feel sick and get the runs if your taking Metformin. I am taking 1500mg, 500mgs 3xs a day. Always with food or milk. Did your DR prescribe folic acid with that. I'm taking 4 - 1mg tabs aday. When I was taking it in the morning with the Metformin I would feel sicker. I started taking th folic acid with my metformin at night with dinner and would feel sick.
Avatar f tn has any1 tried metformin does it really help weight loss and stop excess facial hair?

Avatar m tn 5 Kg (without taking METFORMIN) Then when I went back to my old infertility specialist gynecologist , she told me she already knew all this and she also gave me a prescription of METFORMIN SR 500mg but Slow release metformin and she said good time to take this is afternoon instead of night. and only to take them for only 3 months and not more than that... She also said it is better I remove my fibriods thru laparoscopy. She told me to test for AMH by EIA and I did so , It was 2.
594189 tn?1386916607 I am following the GI Diet and on Metformin as well. I am not sure how much the metformin is actually helping though. What I find hard is that being a bigger girl, I cant get pregnant buy I know plenty of women bigger than me that are pregnant not problem....just depends on the person I guess. Good luck with the BFP.
Avatar f tn Sorry this reply is late. Do not stop taking metformin. Do monitor your blood sugar closely and be careful with diet (avoid sweets, lots of carbs). If your blood sugar cannot be well controlled with metformin, your dr may start you on insulin, which is the preferred medication for managing diabetes during pregnancy. It is important that your blood sugar is very well managed during pregnancy to keep both you and your baby healthy.
Avatar n tn Usually PCOS results in added abdominal weight and if you have increased weight in this area, the combination of Metformin, diet and exercise can help your hormones go back to normal more quickly. It would be best to give your body a few months to get regulated in order to have the healthiest pregnancy possible. Best wishes for a healthy pregnancy in the future!
Avatar m tn 93 ( 80-100) my doctor gave me Ciofor ( Metformin ) 1000 in the morning and 500 in the afetrnoon ....nothing about diet she asked me not to eat sweet stuff. do not you think that this is very hig doseze of Ciofor ???? Avatar f tn Do you know what really works during or having PCOS, what type of exercise or food can I eat to keep a healthy body weight. I'm 35 now, and Since I was 28 I gain lot of weight, I'm 5'3 my weight is 215 lb, I start a diet and only get to loose like 5 pounds and I get tired. God, but I can't get to keep a good diet.. Doctor prescribed me metformin, but I keep stopping it,I start and stop due to the side effects and my dosage is low.
Avatar n tn Metformin alone, with moderate diet restrictions is often enough to keep glucose within manageable limits.
