Avatar n tn He told me that it will be easier for me to loose weight. Problem is that I am gaining weight, I cut my carbs and calories intake and walking for 1 hour 3 times a week, but still gaining weight. Does that mean metformin is not working for me ?
Avatar f tn Before going on metformin my weight was 277. I was put on metformin seven months ago and things have changed alot for me I dont eat as much as I use too. I take 500 mg twice a day. I take at lunch and dinner. The weight seem to just fall off without me really doing anything like execrise. Before I was tested for being insulin resistanced I craved sugary foods like candy. I would buy bags and bags of candy, but once i started metformin all those cravings stopped.
Avatar n tn I have PCOS too and I have been put on Metformin which helps with weight loss. People with PCOS have a higher insulin levels which decreases your female hormones and increases the male hormones which cause the hair growth and scattered periods. These are things that you know about but with increased insulin levels your body does not process the food correctly and tends to hold onto it which is why I gained weight! Metformin is for glucose patients and that is why it helps PCOS patients.

I started getting Reiki and relflexogoy to assist my body in getting back into a proper cycle. I did this for a about 3 months and then found out i was pregnant. I have heat Metformin is a great help.
Avatar n tn I am taking Metformin for PCOS, and I am not trying to get pregnat, will this drug be effective to treat my PCOS. Also how does it help with weight loss.
Avatar m tn Hi, Drugs for weight loss cannot be taken for an unlimited period of time and need to be taken under medical supervision. Depending on your hormonal levels, the metforim should help with the PCOS. Weight loss can be achieved by a combination of dietary control and exercise. Hope this helps.
415867 tn?1323365503 Some women, either with diabetes or PCOS, use metformin as a tool for weight loss. If this is the case, weight loss can occur somewhere between 1 and 5 weeks after beginning a regimen of metformin. Some studies suggest that metformin may also be useful in weight loss for women who are not diabetic or have PCOS, but more research is needed on this point.
Avatar m tn Metformin and also with the help of diet will help to decrease weight. I take Metformin 500mg 2x a day and at one point lost 60 lbs....due to stress and family problems I have put 15 lbs back on over the last 6 months or so. But if you continue to eat right and take this drug with moderate working out, the weight will drop and stay off.
Avatar f tn Can you tell me about its side effects? Recently I went for a checkup and my doctor gave me Metformin for weight loss (It suddently went up to 99 kg though I was at 85 before and was following a strict diet plan). I don't have diabetes and I haven't been diagnosed with PCOS, and I think Metformin is generally used for these two issues. So I'm concened whether I should really be Metformin. Can it mess up my insulin system?
706214 tn?1244523049 If you are overweight even moderate weight loss and exercise will improve the symptoms of PCOS . because weigth gain makes the hormonal imbalance worse. although i hate medicines and their side effects metformin may help with weight loss aswell .
2006473 tn?1422033301 I have pcos too. Just a little warning a out Metformin, it's hard on your tummy for a while till your body gets used to it. Weight loss is suggested and my acupuncturist also says to minimize sugar intake. He probably wants to see you to see how you are doing with the weight loss and meds. Are you trying to get pregnant? Pregnancy is possible with pcos but it's a little more challenging because you keep making cysts on your ovaries.
Avatar f tn Hey there, I have PCOS and I found out Dec 2010...the reason you have little to no cycle is because the cysts in your ovaries form a "pearl necklace" in the ovary making it difficult to release the egg...and as far as the weight issue I was put on 1000mg of metformin plus found a tolerable diet soda...I also napped as much as I could...I figured if i wasn't awake I wasn't eating...but def smaller meals every 2-3hrs drinking sugar free juices like crystal light and diet A&W.
2181880 tn?1337764197 The key to losing weight is eating healthy and drinking lots of water. Weight loss consists of 80% diet and 20% exercise. Find a friend to go on long walks with and your weight should start melting off. Most internet sites gives tons of healthy recipes and tips for better food choices. Unfortunately PCOS does not disappear, but the symptoms may disappear with weight loss. I'm 17 years old and I was diagnosed with the syndrome in February of 2010, when I was 14.
Avatar f tn t say for sure that losing the weight will make you respond better to the meds, but losing weight with PCOS is a good thing since most doctors believe that fertility will be increased with weight loss. I lost weight and got pregnant after taking metformin sporadically (side effects were awful). I wasn't even trying to get pregnant then. Unfortunately, that pregnancy resulted in a miscarriage.
Avatar f tn Losing weight will help to a great extent and hormone levels can get moderated. Drugs like metformin may also help with weight loss. PCOS women may sometimes require induction of ovulation which will increase the chances of a pregnancy. Hope this helps. The answer is based on information provided. Exact advice is not possible without a proper examination and investigations. You are requested to consult your Doctor. Take care and keep us posted.
Avatar f tn I've been diagnosed with PCOS and have been on Metformin for a month now and just had my first period in five months, so it definitely works. No weight loss though. Had a bit of a reaction when I first started it, but once my body settled into it, it was fine.
Avatar f tn Metformin and some type of birth control pill are normally the treatments of pcos. I've had pcos since (and maybe longer) 2007 and have been on metformin 500mg 2x since Jan of this year, plus I'm on Yasmin bc pills. Yasmin, like luisa24 said is the best form of bc pills for pcos. It also helps great if you suffer from mild acne breakouts. To answer your question about the side affects after you stopped treatment, well that i cannot answer.
Avatar f tn HELLO, I HAVE BEEN TAKING METFORMIN FOR YEARS NOW, BUT FOR DIABETES NOT WEIGHT LOSS. I HAD NO IDEA IT WAS ALSO USED FOR WEIGHT CONTROL.FOR ME IT IS TO HELP MY BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS. IT HAS HAD NO EFFECT AT ALL ON MY PERIOD.
Avatar f tn I have been diagnosed with PCOS for 10 years and have had 2 docs tell me that it will be harder to get weight off. It's such a lovely disorder to have, right?! I do take 2000mg of metformin a day , which is supposed to help weight come of more easily and also help regulate periods. I had a miscarriage in Oct and have yet to have a regular cycle...guess each person is different in how the meds effect them.
1442873 tn?1284246187 A little thing to add - keep up with the exercise! I started walking my son to and from school to help me lose a little weight (I was diagnosed with pcos when he was 2 or 3). I lost something like 10 pounds in 2 months and 2 months after that I conceived on accident! We were told by my doctor that we didn't need to prevent pregnancy because I would never get pregnant. So, it's definitely possible!
193609 tn?1292180293 Did your doctor give you metformin? iI too have PCOS, and was put on metformin and birth control pills. I have lost 34lbs since 9/14. Good luck with your diet. Losing just 5 to 10% of your body weight can improve the signs of PCOS.
Avatar n tn I never knew that metformin was given to help get pregnant? Im on metformin for PCOS and it also helped me lose 40lbs. My doctor stated to me that it helps to get pregnant while taking this, but most women who have PCOS are on this drug to help with weight issues and insulin issues and also on bc pills to regulate a period (like me).
Avatar f tn We had tried for 6 years to get pregnant with one miscarriage and finally after the weight loss and a less stressful environment we did it. We are almost 14 weeks now with a natural set of twins. If you would like add me as a friend I would love to talk about any concerns you may have with this medication and what they tell you. You seem to relate to what I had gone through at first. Best of luck to you!
3634255 tn?1347759104 My husband and I want to have a baby. Losing weight has not been easy, although I've done it! I have lost as much as my body will allow me to because although i still do the same thing i did to lose my first 17 pds it is no longer working. Is there something, anything that I can do. I want this so badly.
Avatar f tn Sorry for your loss. Xx congrats on your pregnancy. I have pcos and had a baby girl last July. Pcos is highly linked to gestational diabetes so if they don't test you for that sometime around 22weeks ask for the test. I was told since I have pcos is probably have it. And I did. I kept it diet controlled by eating no more than half q handful of wholegrain carbs per day.. lots of veg and protein ..and cutting out sugar. You should ask the doc or midwife for diet advice.
Avatar f tn in my case their was nothing wrong with my ovaries but I did have insulin resistance which caused me very bad acne, no period at all, alittle facial hair, and definitely darking folds around my neck and arms.My OB/GYN put me on metformin and birth control. A year later I've lost 61 pounds because of it..i feel amazing. It was slow in the beginning because of the side effects from the metformin ex. stomach bloat, gas, diarrhea, and ingestion.
Avatar f tn I'm I the same boat. I have pcos and diet and excersice and I'm lucky if a lose a pounf between monthly obgyn appts.
