Common Questions and Answers about Metformin and weight loss patients

glucophage

Avatar n tn Metformin (Glucophage) must be taken with food otherwise it may cause nausea or vomiting, gas, ingestion, and abdominal discomfort leading to loss of appetite and, of course, excessive weight loss. Your mother might want to switch to the long-acting form of Metformin, called Metformin ER, which has fewer side effects in patients. Please discuss this with her doctor.
Avatar n tn These are things that you know about but with increased insulin levels your body does not process the food correctly and tends to hold onto it which is why I gained weight! Metformin is for glucose patients and that is why it helps PCOS patients. It is also used in weight loss. For me it has helped with my PCOS because I am having regular periods and it has helped me lose weight. Talk to your GYNO about it!
Avatar f tn thank you!!!! the metformin is strictly for weight loss! and my doctor said we cannot "up" my synthroid becuse my labs say im almost hyper, which is weird because i dont feel hyper at alll!? I feel basically the same, the only symptom that is better is that I am not as sleepy! Does it take awhile for synthroid to kick in? its been almost a year! :( thank you again for answering me! i just really want to lose the weight i have gained! its really effecting my life!
Avatar f tn Since I now longer take Metformin I am having trouble losing the last 20 lbs I need to lose. Is there a connection between weight loss and taking Metformin. Has anyone else experienced this?
Avatar f tn As soon as I was diagnosed I cut out carbs and now my weight is at 92 - 95 pounds. I am very small boned and when I was younger I weighed between 90 & 95 pounds until I turn 40 something. My morning blood sugar fasting when I was first diagnosed at hardly ever below 135 in the morning. Even the first 3 months with a high protein low carb diet my sugar was staying about 125 in the morning.
Avatar f tn Before going on metformin my weight was 277. I was put on metformin seven months ago and things have changed alot for me I dont eat as much as I use too. I take 500 mg twice a day. I take at lunch and dinner. The weight seem to just fall off without me really doing anything like execrise. Before I was tested for being insulin resistanced I craved sugary foods like candy. I would buy bags and bags of candy, but once i started metformin all those cravings stopped.
Avatar n tn He told me that it will be easier for me to loose weight. Problem is that I am gaining weight, I cut my carbs and calories intake and walking for 1 hour 3 times a week, but still gaining weight. Does that mean metformin is not working for me ?
Avatar f tn Can you tell me about its side effects? Recently I went for a checkup and my doctor gave me Metformin for weight loss (It suddently went up to 99 kg though I was at 85 before and was following a strict diet plan). I don't have diabetes and I haven't been diagnosed with PCOS, and I think Metformin is generally used for these two issues. So I'm concened whether I should really be Metformin. Can it mess up my insulin system?
Avatar n tn There are a number of patients that have noted weight loss with their use of the birth control pill Micrette. However, there are no guarantees and I am guessing that some have a good amount of weight loss where others may only lose a few pounds. It also seems to be more user friendly than some of the competitors that have weight gain as a common problem. Hope this helps...
Avatar m tn Metformin and also with the help of diet will help to decrease weight. I take Metformin 500mg 2x a day and at one point lost 60 lbs....due to stress and family problems I have put 15 lbs back on over the last 6 months or so. But if you continue to eat right and take this drug with moderate working out, the weight will drop and stay off.
Avatar f tn So it has definately helped with weight loss when I put some effort. So it does help with weight loss, but only when you are already trying to lose weight. If that makes sense?
Avatar m tn Hi, Drugs for weight loss cannot be taken for an unlimited period of time and need to be taken under medical supervision. Depending on your hormonal levels, the metforim should help with the PCOS. Weight loss can be achieved by a combination of dietary control and exercise. Hope this helps.

Avatar f tn Can a person who is not a diabetic take metformin for weight loss.. I need to loose 60lbs i have tried other prescription's diet pill's and i'am immune to them they work for awhile then nothing.
1090984 tn?1463769850 I am hysterical now and the weight is really heavy in my middle section, I never gained weight there in my life. I was thinking of going on metformin, I hearf that was good for weight loss. Any ideas what could be going on??
Avatar n tn As with ANY treatment, it is effective for most people but not everyone. Also, some people do have weight loss as Metformin helps their body use insulin. Again, it varies from person to person.
Avatar f tn I used Clomid for 2 cycles and decided to stop and focus on weight loss. Lo and behold I got pregnant! It was like the Clomid re-started my ovaries. I did miscarry but that was because I needed to be on progesterone because of having Clomid in the previous cycle. Well I decided to get back to losing weight. It took 8 weeks to get AF (arrived January 13) after the miscarriage. I lost 8 lbs in January alone. On February 13 I got a positive pregnancy test! I'm currently 6 weeks pregnant.
1407457 tn?1281317353 Here are a few tips that I picked up while I was at my lowest weight (271 with a weight loss of 62lbs!, but due to family problems my weight went back and forth and I'm currently at it again!). Pasta: stick to whole wheat/whole grain, 2 ounces (is about a cup I think). Add veggies to it to make it more filling. Rice: Brown rice is better, limit the amount. Bread: stick to whole wheat/whole grain with FIBER! Fiber is perfect for us who have pcos, eating more fiber...
Avatar f tn HELLO, I HAVE BEEN TAKING METFORMIN FOR YEARS NOW, BUT FOR DIABETES NOT WEIGHT LOSS. I HAD NO IDEA IT WAS ALSO USED FOR WEIGHT CONTROL.FOR ME IT IS TO HELP MY BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS. IT HAS HAD NO EFFECT AT ALL ON MY PERIOD.
Avatar f tn The possibility of cancer with unexplained weight loss is always there. However if there is a weight loss and thyroid and diabetes status is fine and the weight loss due to metformin has been attained, then this should be looked into. Also if you have not noticed a further weight loss it may not be there. Keep a record and see. Hope this helps. Take care!
Avatar n tn My Doctor put me on Metformin for "borderline Type 2 Diabetes" (my blood sugar count is 6.5). About 3 months ago, he started me on one 500MG at bedtime. My blood sugar count remained the same, so a month ago he doubled the dosage to 1000MG (once during the day and at bedtime). However, I am not experiencing any weight loss, but I am experiencing hair loss. Every morning I brush out lots of hair and the texture of my hair has changed.
2006473 tn?1422033301 I have only taken the metformin twice so far and no upset tummy (Thank Gpd) and I am already starting weightwatchers to try and help me lose weight. I go back to see the doc in about 4 months to see how everything is working out. As for the whole pregnancy thing I was hoping to really start my family in about 2 years. Having children is very important to me so we will be talking to the doctors about that too.
Avatar f tn My A1C has been improving slightly through weight loss, diet and exercise. It is now at 6.6 At its highest it was 7 or just under. I am not taking medication at present. My daily readings are slightly high in the morning at approx. 130 (dawn effect!), but normal the rest of the day at 100 or less. My GP prescribed 4x500 mg of Metformin daily which I am too hesitant to take. Any thoughts please?
Avatar n tn I have gained weight and lost so much muscle. I am so motivated to lose weight but nothing works. I have turned to a vegan lifestyle, walk 2.5 miles a day, religiously count my calories, and drink at least 48 oz of water a day if not more. I lost 1 pound in 2 weeks!!! Can anyone relate to what I am going through and give me some helpful advice...please???
Avatar f tn Hey there, I have PCOS and I found out Dec 2010...the reason you have little to no cycle is because the cysts in your ovaries form a "pearl necklace" in the ovary making it difficult to release the egg...and as far as the weight issue I was put on 1000mg of metformin plus found a tolerable diet soda...I also napped as much as I could...I figured if i wasn't awake I wasn't eating...but def smaller meals every 2-3hrs drinking sugar free juices like crystal light and diet A&W.
