Metformin (Glucophage) must be taken with food otherwise it may cause nausea or vomiting, gas, ingestion, and abdominal discomfort leading to loss of appetite and, of course, excessive weight loss. Your mother might want to switch to the long-acting form of Metformin, called Metformin ER, which has fewer side effects in patients. Please discuss this with her doctor.
Hi, it depends on the treatment I guess, but I don't think you should expect any weight gain. Metformin will help with weight loss - I don't have any weight to shed, but Met really helps with appetite and maintainance. I also find Yasmin (BCP) harmless in this respect: I gain weight very easily usually and struggle to maintain it off, but Yasmin never caused any problems in this respect, I'd say on the contrary.

Before going on metformin my weight was 277. I was put on metformin seven months ago and things have changed alot for me I dont eat as much as I use too. I take 500 mg twice a day. I take at lunch and dinner. The weight seem to just fall off without me really doing anything like execrise. Before I was tested for being insulin resistanced I craved sugary foods like candy. I would buy bags and bags of candy, but once i started metformin all those cravings stopped.
I was diagnosed with PCOS in August of 2010 and was put on Metformin, one pill a day to help regulate my menstrual. I have been very active and lost 100 lbs before being diagnosed, and so exercise and eating healthy are not a new thing to me. I exercise 6 days a week, and since being on Meformin. The medication is working with one problem, but I'm not sure why it isn't helping in the other area of weight. I heard that people loose weight with Metformin! So I'm stuck as what to do??
The potential of weight gain and the risk of diabetes occurs with all atypical (current generation) antipsychotics, some more than others. However each person responds differently to each medication. With some antipsychotics I was prescribed I didn't encounter any concerns as regards weight gain. The potential risk of diabetes can be treated with Metformin.
However only a psychiatrist would understand the clinical specifics
so it would be worth discussing this with them.
My 11 yr old daughter was recently tested for PCOS, per my request. She's had rapid weight gain since the age of 3. At best, I've been able to stablize her weight through diet and exercise, but only for a period of time. If she faulters, even slightly from healthy eating, she instantly gains weight. PCOS does run in my family - one sister was diagnosed in her early twenties, the other sister has all of the symptoms.
) All these meds made me sick and gain weight. I recently went to my DR due to high blood pressure and he put me back on the meds but Glimpiride 1mg instead of the Medformin. I really need to lose some weight and my Dr is not into fad diets my? is,Do I start the meds and do the diet or do I just do the diet and see what my stats are? All these meds have scary side effects and say no drinking alcohol but the HCG drops have 20%.alcohol. If I lose the weight will my stats change?
Metformin helps regulate insulin levels and therefore correct the hormone imbalance that might be causing the weight gain and infertility. I am not sure Metformin will help you lose weight unless you are exercising and watching your diet, but regulating your insulin will help get your body on track to losing weight more effectively.
