Common Questions and Answers about Metformin and nausea

glucophage

hi everyone just a wee quick question on people taking metformin,iv been taking it for over 6 months now and i still find that am getting side effects such as nausea and upset tummy, especially as soon as i eat somethin, does it get any easier the longer your on it,sometimes id rather not take it but were ttc, and from what iv read it has helped loads of people lose weight and helped people to conceieve, thanks ladies if u have time to reply.
I have been taking the metformin for a little over a month. I've lost about 10 pounds from it. Mainly because it made me feel nauseated, so I didn't want to eat. It's getting a little better now though. My sister-in-law took it for PCOS, and she didn't need to take clomid or anything, it regulated her enough that she ovulated on her own. She's pregnant with twins right now. I just had a miscarriage in November, so I'm waiting 'til around February to take the clomid again.
If it does turn out to be the metformin though I wouldn't give it up I would check into the fortamet (world of difference for me anyway, I had a toN of side effects on metformin, not the first one on fortamet, it costs more though so when I thought my body could handle it I talked to my doctor and switched back to the metformin). If nothing else you could always quit taking the metformin for a week and see if you get to feeling better then start back on it and see if the sickness returns.
Yes, one nasty side effect of Metformin is nausea. He should have been aware of this from reading the pharmaceutical paperwork that accompanied the Metformin bottle, or by his Pharmacist. Keep in mind, not everyone can tolerate the same medications. What he needs to do is notify his doctor asap as there are other oral diabetes medications that can be Rx'd.
More nausea today - I think it might be the metformin not the clomid. Specialist has me on quite a high dose, 850mg twice a day. Is any one else getting nausea from it?
I have chronic nausea and am worried I have parasites. I took some fiber and it helped and I did a parasite cleanse. This discussion is related to Chronic nausea.
I'm a diabetic taking metformin. I am constantly feeling nausea symptoms all day long -- even after eating. When they are the worst two things happen that I can't seem to find answers for. (1) I get a severe cramping nausea in my upper stomach and (2) I can hear a noise in my head like a gland or something secreting or squirting, Can anyone tell me what this is and how to deal with it. It happens at all hours of the day. It even wakes me up in the middle of the night.
I don't know if anything else, I take metformin 1000mgs a day, and at first it kept me with the runs and I lost 20lbs but, then after my body got use to the meds I gained it all back.. I am going to start a liquid diet.. if that doesn't help then I am going to look into Weight Loss surgery.. I am close to 250lbs my biggest is 255.. and I am 5'6 I think that my weight has alot to do with all my health problems and not being able to get PG.. so I need to lose weight some how..
I started metformin about five weeks ago and the first four weeks weight was coming off fairly fast and this past week I haven't lost any, so my question is has anyone or is it frequent the Met will work briefly and then the weight loss will stop. I'm also just wanting to hear how much promblems people were having befor met and how much weight came off after and what amount of time did it take? Thanks for your guys help. I'd love any advice or incouraging stories.

Unfortunately, some of the side effects of the drug are similar---such as nausea. Usually the side effects of Metformin improve with continued use of the drug.

Hi everyone, I've just finished my first cycle of Fermera (days 3-7 5mg) and have also started Metformin, the doc is cycling me up to 1500mg by week 4 (250/500/1000/1500)... I'm not entirely sure what to expect, I've started the OPK tests and nothing yet, I'm at day 15 now, but based on this App I have - it's predicting my fertile days to start on Aug 31 ...
I eat lots of salads, fish and veggies that are diabetic friendly. I limit rice, pasta and potatoes. I hope the side effects you are experiencing go away soon, best of luck.
in my case their was nothing wrong with my ovaries but I did have insulin resistance which caused me very bad acne, no period at all, alittle facial hair, and definitely darking folds around my neck and arms.My OB/GYN put me on metformin and birth control. A year later I've lost 61 pounds because of it..i feel amazing. It was slow in the beginning because of the side effects from the metformin ex. stomach bloat, gas, diarrhea, and ingestion.
Also on fertility medicine Femara and thyroid medicine, typing to get pregnant. I need some fruit to take Metformin. Just Metformin is making me more nauseous and discouraging. So I eat one date fruit with every Metformin i,e just after swallowing Metformin. Is this okay?. Also I eat grapes now whenever I feel like need more energy to move around. Is that good? I lost my apetite after started Metformin. So trying to be more on fruits.
Metformin (Glucophage) must be taken with food otherwise it may cause nausea or vomiting, gas, ingestion, and abdominal discomfort leading to loss of appetite and, of course, excessive weight loss. Your mother might want to switch to the long-acting form of Metformin, called Metformin ER, which has fewer side effects in patients. Please discuss this with her doctor.
I have been on Metformin - 1700mg per day - in two 850mg doses. I get super sick both nausea and the other stuff. Wondering if there is any special diet that might help? Or times of day to take it? Any advice is appreciated. I think that it is working, but I hate being sick all the time and find myself not taking it to avoid being sick. Thanks in advance.
I started on Metformin June 29. I haven't experienced any nausea but I feel tired/sleepy. Has anyone experienced this? I take 500 mg twice a day, breakfast and lunch. Thanks.
I have been on Metformin for about 3 yrs. I still get sick to my stomach and very loose stools and painful gas. Somedays I get no side affects and other days its unreal. Thought I would get use to it. I am on it for serveral reasons. No AF, cystic acne and to top it off type 2 diabetes.Since taken it,no skipped periods and no big cyst on my face, That last one is a blessing in its self.
I'm on metformin and i started to ovulate again on it. It makes me feel very sick, nausea and yes my breast hurt too. Mine are fuller also so I think it can be something to do with that. Also if they give you progesterone that will do that too. I started on metform on 9/11/08 and finally ovulated for the first time in over a year on 10/31/08 even had a normal cycle last month. I really like that medication.
So I was just diagnosed with PCOS in August. And my endo wants to treat me with Metformin to regulate my mensutral cycle and ovulation. But I wasn't sure if all these meds have their interaction or not.
I was extremely nauseated and had diarrhea the first two weeks, but now I'm only have nausea very occasionally and getting better. The most amazing thing (I thought) was that the weight started peeling off me 2 weeks ago. I now weigh 238 lbs. That's 16 lbs since Dec 5. I got very anxious about the weight loss and thought I had cancer and then went to the pharmacy and started research and found out it was the met that was doing it. One morning I woke up and had shed 4 lbs overnight.
