Avatar n tn My Doctor put me on Metformin for "borderline Type 2 Diabetes" (my blood sugar count is 6.5). About 3 months ago, he started me on one 500MG at bedtime. My blood sugar count remained the same, so a month ago he doubled the dosage to 1000MG (once during the day and at bedtime). However, I am not experiencing any weight loss, but I am experiencing hair loss. Every morning I brush out lots of hair and the texture of my hair has changed.
Avatar n tn Could Metformin cause thinning or hair loss? I started two Metformin 500 mg a day last May. Went on a locarb, no processed foods or alcohol diet. Lost 30#'s. End of August, switched to one Metformin ER 500 mg a day cause my A1C went from 7.4 down to 5.2 in 3 1/2 months. I have thought of a vitamin or iron deficiency, but I eat a lot of healthy foods and haven't lost weight beyond the 30#'S I lost last summer. I read that some people on here think Victoza caused their hair loss.
Avatar f tn ve suffered from painful ovarian cysts, had several miscarriages, male hair growth on the face and chest, hair loss, depression, mood swings, high cholesterol, chronic anxiety, and high blood pressure. I have been told by an Enternal Medical Specialist that my only hope of losing weight is Gastric Bypass, which my insurance won't cover because I do not have diabetes. I don' t know what to do anymore. This weight is destroying me mentally, physically, and emotionally.
Avatar n tn i am on metformin and thank good it is working for me i used to weight 115 after pcos went to 170 now i am on 160 lost ten pound after i started metformin.but you dont loose it right away so keep on it.
Avatar f tn has any1 tried metformin does it really help weight loss and stop excess facial hair?
Avatar f tn If your on metformin and if your overweight and on a diet, your symptoms will improve with weight loss. Im on metformin 500mg 1x a day plus birth control. I also take a multi viatmin and another vitamin called Super B Complex (it has a ton of vitamin in it, also it helps with hair skin and nails, well thats what it says on the bottle) I've noticed while taking everything, my symptoms are getting better. My periods use to be about 4-5 days while on bc pills, now it last 3 days.
Avatar m tn i have all the symptons the majorrr weight gain, excess hair growth, acne, and thinning hair. Will metformin help all my symptoms?
Avatar f tn Hello all, I was recently diagnosed with PCOS, and I would just like to say thank you to everyone, I feel so much better reading everyone's stories and experiences, it lets me know I'm not alone. While I have many nasty symptoms from PCOS, my thinning/balding hair seems to be a big problem. I have probably lost almost half my hair at this point (almost all of it from the top of my head and hairline).
Avatar n tn I have PCOS too and I have been put on Metformin which helps with weight loss. People with PCOS have a higher insulin levels which decreases your female hormones and increases the male hormones which cause the hair growth and scattered periods. These are things that you know about but with increased insulin levels your body does not process the food correctly and tends to hold onto it which is why I gained weight! Metformin is for glucose patients and that is why it helps PCOS patients.
393893 tn?1283551230 ) I would definitely call your doctor and maybe a pharmacist to see what the hair loss is about. Now, I did experience some hair loss with PCOS, though, so is it possible that could be it? If you do decide to start taking the Metformin again, I would start at a very low dose and up the does every week or two.
Avatar f tn I am a young female with PCOS. The initial complaint that I brought to my doctor was experiencing hair growth on my face, excess hair growth on my arms/legs/bikini, and hair loss on my head. I've since begun laser hair removal on my face and arms, but I am about 4 treatments in (24 wks) and am not noticing results. It is becoming more and more difficult to hold my head high- many days I don't even want to be seen in public.
Avatar f tn Thanks, Heather! I have stopped taking Metformin as I developed serious side affects from it, one of them is hair loss. I was supposed to take 3000 mg per day but was taking 1000 for one wk. and 2000 for the second week to avoid side effects but looks I just couldn't handle the higher dosage... I am not sure if PCOS has anything to do with HAIR LOSS but every time I take a shower, I get depressed b/c the amount of hair I loose is just heart breaking.
Avatar f tn d say on the contrary. Spironolactone which is used to treat hirsutism or hair loss is a diuretic, and therefore it will actually help you not to retain water (I have this problem). These are the most common approaches and none of these will lead to weight gain. At the beginnig of the treatment I was put on Diane 35 (BCP) and Androcur (these are not available in the USA) and while they worked wonders for my hair I was starting to gain some weight - so I went off them.
Avatar n tn Metformin (Glucophage) must be taken with food otherwise it may cause nausea or vomiting, gas, ingestion, and abdominal discomfort leading to loss of appetite and, of course, excessive weight loss. Your mother might want to switch to the long-acting form of Metformin, called Metformin ER, which has fewer side effects in patients. Please discuss this with her doctor.
Avatar n tn Hi Dear, First of all calm down!!! Second you should not up your dose unless your doctor told you to do so, I gradually increased all the way up to 2000mg of extended release a day but that was by my doctors orders only. Initially I started at 500 once a day for a week, and then to 500mgs twice a day for 1 week, and then to 500mgs three times a day for 1 week, and then eventually 500mgs four times a day for always...or in my case until pregnancy is acheived.
Avatar f tn Can you tell me about its side effects? Recently I went for a checkup and my doctor gave me Metformin for weight loss (It suddently went up to 99 kg though I was at 85 before and was following a strict diet plan). I don't have diabetes and I haven't been diagnosed with PCOS, and I think Metformin is generally used for these two issues. So I'm concened whether I should really be Metformin. Can it mess up my insulin system?
Avatar m tn I was diagnosed about 10 years ago. I am currently on a regimen of metformin, birth control, and spironolactone. Depending on if you are wanting to get pregnant, the birth control regulates your menstrual cycle. The metformin controls your insulin, PCOS coincides with insulin levels, your body becomes resistent and produces excess levels. Which causes the numerous cysts on your ovaries. The sprionolactone, lowers testosterone levels, which are high in most women with the disorder.
Avatar n tn I have to shave almost every day to deal with the facial hair and as far as the hair loss goes. I totally understand. My hair falls out all the time. I have lost all my beautiful long hair but to a wonderful stylist I now have a very cute summer bob hairstyle and I love it. It is a lot cooler then the long hair. I am 25 and have been dealing with PCOS diagnosed for 8 years. We started Metformin on a high dose of 1700mg per day and Birth Control at the start.
Avatar f tn you can by a self bleacher at your local walmart for $5 it always works for me, it takes the colour out and makes the hair really soft.........As for the hair loss I have yet to find a solution.. i attend a highschool which has very critical people there so i have resulted to wearing my hair curly and i have to pin it to cover the bald spot we arent allowed to wear hats or i would do that very day!
Avatar f tn in my case their was nothing wrong with my ovaries but I did have insulin resistance which caused me very bad acne, no period at all, alittle facial hair, and definitely darking folds around my neck and arms.My OB/GYN put me on metformin and birth control. A year later I've lost 61 pounds because of it..i feel amazing. It was slow in the beginning because of the side effects from the metformin ex. stomach bloat, gas, diarrhea, and ingestion.
Avatar f tn I've been diagnosed with PCOS for over ten years. I tried birth control several times. I tried different medicines. I have been putting on 4-6 pounds a year since I was 18 (I'm 28). I got up to a size 16 and couldn't lose the weight no matter what I did. I had excessive hair growth everywhere. I carried almost all my weight in my stomach. I was depressed, had no energy, no libido. I would only get my period 3 times a year.
Avatar m tn I agree with the above poster. You shouldn't stop medication w/out first concultimg your doctor. Also, don't worry about possible fertility issues til the time comes. I found out I had PCOS after a year of TTC and I'm now on metformin and clomid. I have been responding well to the metformin and just started my first round of clomid. Hopefully I'll be preggers soon.
Avatar f tn I was on metformin 1500mg for 6 months which helped me lose weight (25 pounds) and I got pregnant naturally which I believe is due to metformin and the weight loss because I had been trying for almost 2 years with no success. Yes metformin is not easy to take, I have a very very hard time with it, many side effects and I even took it durring my first trimester along with my bad morning sickness (never missing a dose) now that is dedication!
